UK Mathematics Trust (UKMT) Challenges

What is UKMT?

The UK Mathematics Trust (UKMT) organises national mathematics competitions for UK secondary school students, from Year 7 to Year 13. These challenges test mathematical thinking rather than rote knowledge.

Competition Levels

  • Junior Mathematical Challenge (JMC): Year 8 and below (April)
  • Intermediate Mathematical Challenge (IMC): Year 11 and below (February)
  • Senior Mathematical Challenge (SMC): Year 13 and below (November)

Format (All Levels)

  • Duration: 1 hour
  • Questions: 25 multiple-choice questions
  • Scoring: +4 correct, -1 wrong for Q16–25 (IMC/SMC), +5 correct for Q16–25 (JMC)
  • No calculator

Follow-on Rounds

  • Kangaroo: Top performers from JMC/IMC — 1 hour, harder problems
  • Olympiad: Top performers from IMC/SMC — written proof-based papers
  • BMO (British Mathematical Olympiad): Top SMC scorers — two rounds of intense proof problems
  • IMO Training: Top BMO performers train for International Mathematical Olympiad

Awards

  • Gold, Silver, Bronze certificates based on national percentiles
  • Best in School and Best in Year certificates

Preparation

  • Practice with past UKMT papers (available on UKMT website)
  • Develop problem-solving creativity — UKMT questions reward clever insights over standard methods
  • Focus on number theory, combinatorics, geometry, and logical reasoning
  • Try timed practice: 60 seconds per question average
