What is UKMT?
The UK Mathematics Trust (UKMT) organises national mathematics competitions for UK secondary school students, from Year 7 to Year 13. These challenges test mathematical thinking rather than rote knowledge.
Competition Levels
- Junior Mathematical Challenge (JMC): Year 8 and below (April)
- Intermediate Mathematical Challenge (IMC): Year 11 and below (February)
- Senior Mathematical Challenge (SMC): Year 13 and below (November)
Format (All Levels)
- Duration: 1 hour
- Questions: 25 multiple-choice questions
- Scoring: +4 correct, -1 wrong for Q16–25 (IMC/SMC), +5 correct for Q16–25 (JMC)
- No calculator
Follow-on Rounds
- Kangaroo: Top performers from JMC/IMC — 1 hour, harder problems
- Olympiad: Top performers from IMC/SMC — written proof-based papers
- BMO (British Mathematical Olympiad): Top SMC scorers — two rounds of intense proof problems
- IMO Training: Top BMO performers train for International Mathematical Olympiad
Awards
- Gold, Silver, Bronze certificates based on national percentiles
- Best in School and Best in Year certificates
Preparation
- Practice with past UKMT papers (available on UKMT website)
- Develop problem-solving creativity — UKMT questions reward clever insights over standard methods
- Focus on number theory, combinatorics, geometry, and logical reasoning
- Try timed practice: 60 seconds per question average
