1. Reflecting on Year 10: Key Concepts to Master | 回顾 Year 10:必须掌握的核心概念
Before diving into the Year 11 curriculum, it is vital to ensure that your understanding of Year 10 topics is secure. In WJEC Physics, the first year typically covers the basics of energy, electricity and waves. You should be comfortable with energy stores and transfers, the principles of current, voltage and resistance in circuits, and the wave equation linking speed, frequency and wavelength. A shaky foundation in these areas will make it much harder to tackle the mechanics and nuclear physics that follow. Revisit your notes on series and parallel circuits, the calculation of efficiency and the electromagnetic spectrum to refresh these fundamental ideas.
v = f λ
ves of different types. Remember that all electromagnetic waves travel at the same speed in a vacuum, approximately 3.0 × 10⁸ m/s.
2. Units and Measurements: Precision and Standard Form |
cond, ampere, kelvin) and derived units such as the newton (N) for force and the joule (J) for energy. In GCSE Physics, numbers can be very large (e.g. the speed of light) or very small (e.g. the wavelength of gamma rays), so you frequently need to use standard form. For example, the charge on an electron is written as 1.6 × 10⁻¹⁹ C. Practising conversions between units, such as centimetres to metres or kilograms to grams, will minimise careless errors in exams.
When recording data from practical work, pay attention to the resolution of the instrument and use the appropriate number of significant figures. For WJEC, you are expected to calculate means, recognise anomalies and evaluate the precision of your results.
3. Forces and Motion: Scalar and Vector Quantities |
One of the most important distinctions in mechanics is between scalar and vector quantities. Scalars, such as distance, speed, mass and energy, have magnitude (size) only. Vectors, including displacement, velocity, force and momentum, have both magnitude and direction. Understanding this difference is crucial when you start to analyse motion, because the direction of a vector can completely change the outcome. For instance, two forces of equal magnitude acting on an object in opposite directions produce a resultant force of zero, while the same forces acting in the same direction add together.
Distance is how much ground an object has covered, whereas displacement is the straight-line distance in a given direction.
s a scalar: speed = distance / time. Velocity is a vector: velocity = displacement / time.
average speed = total distance / total time | v = s / t
4. Describing Motion: Graphs and Equations |
Motion can be represented and analysed using distance-time graphs and velocity-time graphs. A distance-time graph shows how distance changes over time; the gradient of the line gives the speed. A horizontal line means the object is stationary. A velocity-time graph is even more powerful: the gradient gives the acceleration, and the area under the graph gives the distance travelled. If the line is horizontal on a velocity-time graph, the object is moving at constant velocity. A straight sloping line indicates constant acceleration.
From the definitions of acceleration and average velocity, you can derive the key equations used in uniform acceleration problems. The most commonly used ones are:
a = (v − u) / t
v² = u² + 2 a s
where u is initial velocity, v is final velocity, a is acceleration, t is time, and s is displacement. Practise rearranging these equations and substituting values correctly, taking care with units.
5. Newton's Laws: The Link between Force and Motion |
Newton' ted upon by a resultant force. This introduces the concept of inertia. The second law quantifies the effect: the acceleration of an object is directly proportional to the resultant force acting on it and inversely proportional to its mass, giving the famous equation F = m a. The third law reminds us that forces always occur in pairs: if object A exerts a force on object B, then B exerts an equal-sized force in the opposite direction on A.
F = m a (resultant force = mass × acceleration)
When you apply this equation, remember that F must be the net (resultant) force acting on the object, not just one of many forces. If multiple forces are present, you must first resolve them to find the overall resultant.
6. Momentum and Conservation |
Momentum is a vector quantity defined as the product of an object's mass and its velocity. In a closed system, the total momentum before an event (such as a collision or explosion) is equal to the total momentum afterwards, provided no external forces act. This principle of conservation of momentum allows you to solve problems involving collisions, recoil and rocket propulsion. When two objects collide and stick together, the combined mass moves off with a velocity that can be calculated using the conservation law.
p = m v (momentum = mass × velocity)
nce the change in momentum is fixed, increasing the time reduces the average force experienced by the occupants, linking back to Newton's second law and the idea of impulse (F t = Δp).
7. Work, Energy and Power |
The concept of work done links forces to energy transfers. When a force moves an object, work is done on the object and energy is transferred. Work done is calculated by multiplying the force by the distance moved in the direction of the force. No work is done if the force does not cause movement, or if the force acts perpendicular to the motion. Gravitational potential energy (GPE) gained by an object lifted upwards is given by m g h, where h is the vertical height gained. Kinetic energy (KE) of a moving object is ½ m v².
W = F d | GPE = m g h | KE = ½ m v²
fficiency of a device can be found by comparing the useful output energy or power to the total input energy or power, often expressed as a percentage. This is a direct carry-over from Year 10 energy studies and is frequently examined.
8. Radioactivity: Atoms and Nuclear Radiation |
Radioactivity is one of the key topics introduced in Year 11 WJEC Physics. It begins with the structure of the atom: a small, dense nucleus containing protons and neutrons, surrounded by electrons in energy levels. Isotopes are atoms of the same element that have the same number of protons but different numbers of neutrons. Some isotopes are unstable and decay by emitting ionising radiation. The three main types are alpha (α), beta (β) and gamma (γ) radiation, each differing in nature, penetration and ionising ability.
|---|---|---|---|
| Alpha (α) / 阿尔法 | Helium nucleus / 氦核 (2p+2n) | Stopped by paper / 纸可挡住 | High / 强 |
| Beta (β) / 贝塔 | Fast electron / 高速电子 | Stopped by a few mm of aluminium / 几毫米铝 | Medium / 中等 |
| Gamma (γ) / 伽马 | Electromagnetic wave / 电磁波 | Reduced by thick lead or concrete / 厚铅或混凝土减弱 | Low / 弱 |
The activity of a radioactive source is the number of decays per second, measured in becquerels (Bq). Half-life is the time taken for the activity (or number of unstable nuclei) to halve. You need to be able to interpret decay graphs and perform half-life calculations. Applications of radioactivity include medical tracers, radiotherapy, smoke detectors and carbon dating, while safety precautions involve keeping distance, using shielding and minimising exposure time.
9. Space Physics: The Solar System and Orbits |
The WJEC specification includes a fascinating unit on space physics. Our solar system consists of the Sun, eight planets, dwarf planets, moons, asteroids and comets. Planets move around the Sun in elliptical orbits, with their orbital speed varying: a planet moves faster when it is closer to the Sun and slower when it is farther away. This is explained by the gravitational force providing the required centripetal force for circular motion. The force of gravity keeps moons in orbit around planets and artificial satellites around the Earth.
One of the most important pieces of evidence for the Big Bang theory is the observation of redshift. When light from distant galaxies is analysed, the spectral lines are shifted towards the red end of the spectrum, indicating that these galaxies are moving away from us. The further away a galaxy is, the greater its redshift and the faster it is receding. This supports the idea that the universe is expanding and originated from a single point billions of years ago.
10. Waves Revisited: Using the Wave Equation |
Although waves are introduced in Year 10, the topic is deepened in Year 11 through the study of seismic waves, wave behaviour and more detailed applications. All waves transfer energy without transferring matter. Transverse waves, such as light and water ripples, have oscillations perpendicular to the direction of energy transfer. Longitudinal waves, such as sound and ultrasound, have oscillations parallel to the direction of energy transfer. The frequency remains constant when a wave travels from one medium to another, but its speed and wavelength change, leading to refraction.
