1. The Purpose and Nature of Business Activity |

Businesses exist to satisfy the needs and wants of individuals and organisations. Needs are essential for survival, such as food, water and shelter, while wants are goods and services that people desire but are not essential for living. The basic economic problem arises because resources are limited (scarcity) while wants are unlimited, forcing choices about what to produce, how to produce and for whom.

Every choice involves an opportunity cost – the next best alternative given up when a decision is made. For example, if a government spends more on healthcare, the opportunity cost may be fewer resources available for education. Businesses also face opportunity costs when allocating funds between projects.

Businesses use factors of production: land (natural resources), labour (workforce), capital (machinery, buildings, finance) and enterprise (the risk-taking ability of entrepreneurs). Specialisation occurs when individuals, firms or countries focus on producing a limited range of goods or services, which can raise efficiency and output. Adding value is the process of increasing the worth of a product by changing its form or providing additional services; the difference between the cost of raw materials and the selling price is the added value.

2. Classification of Businesses |

Businesses can be classified by their stage of production into three sectors: the primary sector extracts raw materials (e.g. farming, mining), the secondary sector manufactures and constructs goods (e.g. car assembly
