1. Welcome to A Level Computer Science | 欢迎来到 A Level 计算机科学
Year 12 marks the start of the AS qualification, which can be taken as a standalone award or as the first half of the full A Level. You will explore a wide range of topics including programming, data structures, algorithms, computer architecture, data representation, networking, databases, and the ethical impact of computing. The course balances practical programming skills with deep theoretical knowledge.
Expect lessons to involve a mix of hands-on coding, problem-solving exercises, and discussion of real-world technologies. You will need to be a self-motivated learner, comfortable with abstract concepts, and ready to tackle mathematical aspects such as binary logic and Boolean algebra.
One important structural point: the AS is fully examined, with no coursework component. The Programming Project, completed as a non-examined assessment, belongs to the full A Level in Year 13. That means Year 12 rewards consistent revision and exam technique as much as it rewards creativity in code.
Think of Year 12 as the year you build vocabulary and mental models. Terms such as abstraction, decomposition, pipelining and normalisation will appear again and again, so define them precisely in your own notes from the very first week.
2. Understanding the Edexcel Specification | 理解 Edexcel 考纲
The Edexcel AS Computer Science specification (8CN0) is assessed through two examination papers. Paper 1 covers the principles and theory of computer science, while Paper 2 focuses on problem solving and programming. In the full A Level (9CN0), the same two written papers are joined by the Programming Project, which contributes a fifth of the final grade.
| Paper 1 | 8CN0/01 | Principles of Computer Science: architecture, data, networks, databases, ethics |
| Paper 2 | 8CN0/02 | Problem Solving and Programming: algorithms, pseudocode, code analysis |
| Programming Project (A Level only) | 编程项目(仅 A Level) | 9CN0/03 | Independent analysis, design, development and evaluation | 独立的分析、设计、开发与评价 |
Assessment objectives are worth memorising because they explain what examiners reward. Very roughly, AO1 asks you to state and describe, AO2 asks you to apply knowledge to a scenario or a piece of code, and AO3 asks you to analyse, design and evaluate. A question about the purpose of cache memory and a question about which cache size suits a games server are not the same skill.
Before term begins, download the specification and read the subject content pages for the topics you will meet first. Highlighting the command words and the topic list turns a long document into a practical checklist.
3. What Really Changes from GCSE to Year 12 | GCSE 到 Year 12 的真正变化
At GCSE, much of the work rewards accurate recall and short explanations. At A Level, the same knowledge is only the starting point: you are expected to explain mechanisms in sequence, compare alternatives, and justify a choice in context. A two-mark GCSE answer becomes a six-mark explanation with a scenario attached.
Programming also changes character. At GCSE you may have written short programs in an IDE with autocomplete and instant error messages. In Paper 2 you will read and write pseudocode on paper, trace variables through loops, and spot logic errors with no compiler to help you. Hand-tracing is therefore a skill to practise deliberately.
Finally, the theory becomes more mathematical and more layered. Topics such as two's complement subtraction, normalised floating point, Boolean simplification and algorithm complexity demand step-by-step fluency rather than vague familiarity.
A useful self-check: can you explain a topic in three sentences to someone who has never studied computing, and then answer a six-mark exam question on it? If only one of those works, your understanding is incomplete.
4. Your Year 12 Topic Map | Year 12 主题地图
The specification is easier to manage when you see it as four strands: computational thinking and programming, data and algorithms, machines and systems, and consequences. Most exam questions combine at least two strands, so avoid studying topics in isolation.
- Computational thinking and programming | 计算思维与编程: abstraction, decomposition, programming constructs, recursion, object-oriented design, testing and debugging.
- Data and algorithms | 数据与算法: number bases, data structures, searching and sorting, complexity, databases and SQL.
CPU architecture, the fetch-decode-execute cycle, memory and storage, networks and protocols.
- Consequences | 计算的影响: legislation, ethics, privacy, automation, environmental and social impact.
A practical tip is to build a one-page summary per topic as you go, with a definition, a diagram, a worked example, and three exam-style questions. By Easter you will have a complete revision resource written in your own words.
5. Programming: From Scripts to Structured Design |
Year 12 programming moves from "make it work" to "make it work, and explain why it works". You will meet procedural programming, object-oriented programming with classes, objects, attributes, methods, inheritance and polymorphism, plus recursion and modular decomposition using functions and procedures.
Style matters in exams as well as in code. Use meaningful identifiers, consistent indentation and clear comments; when a question says "write an algorithm", pseudocode is acceptable, but it must have unambiguous sequence, selection and iteration, with correct parameter passing.
Testing is examined explicitly. Learn the difference between white-box and black-box testing, and be able to select appropriate test data: valid, invalid, boundary and erroneous.
file size (bits) = width × height × colour depth
file size (bits) = sample rate × resolution × duration × channels
Those two formulas reappear in data representation questions, but the underlying habit — quantifying a claim — is what makes programming answers precise elsewhere too.
Try to write one small program every week: a data logger, a quiz, a maze solver, a simple inventory system. Reading other people's code, including past-paper solutions, is equally valuable and often faster to learn from.
6. Algorithms and Computational Thinking |
Computational thinking gives you the tools to attack unfamiliar problems: decomposition breaks a problem into sub-problems, abstraction removes irrelevant detail, and pattern recognition lets you reuse a known solution. In exams these ideas appear as scenario questions, not as definitions to recite.
- Searching | 查找: linear search O(n), binary search O(log n) on sorted data.
- Sorting | 排序: bubble and insertion sort O(n²), merge sort and quicksort O(n log n) in the average case.
- Graph traversal | 图遍历: breadth-first and depth-first; shortest path with Dijkstra's algorithm.
Be ready to trace an algorithm on a given data set, count comparisons, and explain why one approach is preferable for a particular situation — for example, why binary search is unsuitable for a list that changes constantly.
Complexity is compared, not just stated. A good answer notes that merge sort uses more memory than bubble sort while being far faster on large inputs, so the "better" algorithm depends on the constraint.
7. Data Representation and Boolean Logic |
Data representation is where GCSE knowledge is stretched furthest. You should be fluent converting between binary, denary and hexadecimal, and comfortable with sign-and-magnitude, two's complement and BCD.
-6 in 8-bit two's complement = 1111 1010
Binary shifts are examined as multiplication and division: a left shift of n places multiplies by 2ⁿ, and a right shift divides by 2ⁿ, with the sign bit and carry-out behaviour needing care.
Floating point uses a mantissa and an exponent. Increasing mantissa bits improves precision; increasing exponent bits increases range. Normalised forms begin with 01 or 10, which maximises the precision available at a given word length.
Boolean logic brings algebra into computing. Know the truth tables for AND, OR, NOT, NAND, NOR and XOR, then apply De Morgan's laws:
AND、OR、NOT、NAND、NOR
NOT (A AND B) = (NOT A) OR (NOT B)
NOT (A OR B) = (NOT A) AND (NOT B)
Also revise character sets, bitmaps, sound sampling, compression and encryption, since these topics are frequent contexts for multi-part questions worth eight marks or more.
8. Computer Architecture and the Machine |
The von Neumann model underpins most of this topic: instructions and data share the same memory, and the CPU repeatedly fetches, decodes and executes them. Learn the role of the program counter, memory address register, memory data register, current instruction register and accumulator, and be able to describe the cycle as a sequence.
- Address bus | 地址总线: carries the address of the memory location being accessed.
- Data bus | 数据总线: carries data and instructions in both directions.
- Control bus | 控制总线: carries control signals such as read, write and clock pulses.
Performance questions require comparative reasoning: clock speed, number of cores, cache size and cache level, bus width, and pipelining all affect throughput, but each with limits. More cores help only when the task can be parallelised.
RISC and CISC, embedded systems, and the difference between RAM, ROM, cache, virtual memory and secondary storage are also standard exam material.
9. Networks, the Web and Databases |
Networks are taught as layers and protocols rather than as isolated facts. Know the roles of TCP, UDP, IP, HTTP, HTTPS, FTP, SMTP, POP3, IMAP and Ethernet, and understand why TCP is chosen for file transfer while UDP suits live streaming.
Packet switching, IP addressing and subnet masks, DNS resolution, LAN and WAN topologies, client-server and peer-to-peer models, and the difference between circuit switching and packet switching all appear regularly.
Databases bring in relational design: entities, attributes, primary and foreign keys, entity relationship diagrams, and normalisation to first, second and third normal form. You must be able to write and read simple SQL using SELECT, FROM, WHERE, ORDER BY, INSERT, UPDATE and DELETE.
SELECT、FROM、WHERE、ORDER BY、INSERT、UPDATE 和 DELETE 的简单 SQL。
For the web, learn what HTML, CSS and JavaScript each contribute, the difference between client-side and server-side processing, and how cookies, sessions and search engine indexing work.
10. Ethics, Law and the Consequences of Computing |
This strand is often underestimated because it looks like general knowledge, but it is marked strictly. Name the law, state what it prohibits, then apply it to the scenario in front of you.
GDPR: personal data must be processed lawfully, fairly and transparently.
- Computer Misuse Act 1990 | 1990 年计算机滥用法: unauthorised access, modification and denial-of-service offences.
- Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988 | 1988 年版权、设计与专利法: protects software and creative works.
Ethical discussion goes beyond the law: automation and employment, algorithmic bias, surveillance and privacy, digital exclusion, energy use of data centres, and accessibility for users with disabilities. Strong answers give a benefit, a drawback and a judgement.
Professional codes of conduct, such as those published by the BCS, are useful vocabulary sources for questions about the responsibilities of a programmer or a systems administrator.
11. The Maths You Need and How to Get It | 你需要的数学及其获取方法
You do not need A Level Mathematics to succeed, but you do need fluency in a specific set of techniques. Binary and hexadecimal conversion, binary addition and subtraction, overflow detection, shifts, and floating point representation form the core.
Boolean algebra needs the standard laws: commutative, associative, distributive, identity, complement, absorption and De Morgan. Practise simplifying expressions and drawing logic
