1. The Year 12 Economics Journey | Year 12 经济学之旅
Edexcel Economics A is a linear qualification. In Year 12 you will study Theme 1: Introduction to Markets and Market Failure, and Theme 2: The UK Economy – Performance and Policies. Together they form the AS-level and provide the first half of the full A-level. A structured summer revision ensures you become familiar with terminology, diagrams and the analytical mindset required for top grades.
The specification emphasises applying theory to real-world contexts. Over the summer, you can start connecting everyday news to concepts like inflation, taxation and competition. This habit will dramatically improve your evaluation and application marks later.
2. Scarcity, Choice and Opportunity Cost |
Scarcity means that resources are limited while human wants are infinite. This fundamental economic problem forces all agents – consumers, firms and governments – to make choices, giving rise to the three key questions: what to produce, how to produce and for whom to produce.
Opportunity cost is the value of the next best alternative foregone. When a student decides to spend two hours revising economics, the opportunity cost might be the cinema trip they sacrificed. On a national scale, if a government allocates more resources to defence, the opportunity cost may be fewer hospitals or schools.
Production Possibility Frontiers (PPFs) illustrate these trade-offs. A PPF shows the maximum possible combinations of two goods an economy can produce with given resources. Points inside the curve represent inefficient use; points outside are unattainable. A concave PPF reflects increasing opportunity cost as resources are not equally suited to all activities.
3. Demand and Supply: The Market Mechanism |
The law of demand states that, ceteris paribus, as the price of a good falls, quantity demanded rises – hence the downward-sloping demand curve. Substitution and income effects underpin this relationship. Determinants of demand include income, tastes, prices of substitutes and complements, and expectations about future prices.
Supply, on the other hand, follows a positive relationship: higher prices incentivise producers to offer more, ceteris paribus. The supply curve can shift because of changes in production costs, technology, indirect taxes, subsidies or the number of sellers. A rightward shift indicates an increase in supply at every price.
