Stanford University is a private research university founded in 1885 by Leland Stanford, a railroad magnate and former governor of California, together with his wife Jane Lathrop Stanford. The main campus lies in Palo Alto, in the heart of Silicon Valley, roughly 56 kilometres south of San Francisco. It covers about 8,180 acres, close to 33 square kilometres, which makes it one of the largest university campuses in the United States. Stanford is organised into seven schools that cover undergraduate, graduate and professional education. Stanford states that students from families with lower incomes may receive full support covering tuition, accommodation and other costs. International students may apply for need-based aid, but applications from international applicants are considered need-aware, which means the request for aid can affect the admission decision.
