1. How to Use This Walkthrough |
Edexcel AS Chemistry is split into two units. Unit 1 covers atomic structure, the periodic table, ionic and covalent bonding, shapes of molecules, moles and equations, and the organic chemistry of alkanes and alkenes. Unit 2 develops energetics, kinetics, chemical equilibria and redox, together with the organic chemistry of halogenoalkanes and alcohols and the practical skills that are assessed across the whole course.
Each AS paper is typically 1 hour 30 minutes long and worth 80 marks, so you have roughly one minute per mark. Spend about 55 to 60 minutes on the structured questions, then keep the final 25 to 30 minutes for calculations and longer written answers where precise wording matters.
- Attempt each question with a timer before reading the model answer. |
- Highlight the command word (state, explain, calculate, suggest, deduce) in every question. |
- Write down the mark allocation next to your answer and check you have made that many distinct points. |
- Keep a mistake log: one column for the topic, one for the exact error, one for the fix. |
Mark schemes reward chemistry, not volume. A three-mark explanation usually needs three separate ideas, each containing a correct chemical term such as 'nuclear charge', 'shielding', 'activation energy' or 'lone pair'.
2. Atomic Structure and Ionisation Energy |
Mock question: Which element in the third period has the highest first ionisation energy? Options: Na, Mg, Al, Ar.
First, be secure with the definition. The first ionisation energy is the energy required to remove one mole of electrons from one mole of gaseous atoms to form one mole of gaseous 1+ ions.
Na(g) → Na⁺(g) + e⁻ ΔH = +496 kJ mol⁻¹
Three factors control ionisation energy: nuclear charge, atomic radius, and shielding or electron repulsion. Across Period 3, the nuclear charge increases from 11 to 18 while the shielding from inner 1s² 2s² 2p⁶ shells stays roughly the same, so the outer electron is held more strongly and ionisation energy generally increases.
There are two dips in the trend. From Mg to Al the value falls slightly because the electron removed from aluminium is a 3p electron, which is higher in energy and slightly better shielded than the 3s electrons in magnesium. From P to S the value falls again because sulfur has a 3p⁴ configuration, and the repulsion between the two paired electrons in one 3p orbital makes one of them easier to remove.
Argon, however, is a noble gas with a completely filled 3p subshell, giving it an exceptionally stable electron configuration. Despite the two dips between Mg and Al and between P and S, argon still has the highest first ionisation energy in Period 3. The correct answer is Ar.
Common mistake: students choose Al because its outer electron is in the 3p subshell, or they simply assume the value must keep rising because of the general periodic trend. The classic weak answer is 'argon is a noble gas', which on its own earns nothing; you must link the stable 3p⁶ configuration to the large amount of energy needed to remove an electron.
3. Mass Spectrometry and Relative Atomic Mass |
A mass spectrometer vaporises the sample, ionises it with a beam of electrons, accelerates the gaseous ions in an electric field, and separates them by mass-to-charge ratio. Only positive ions are detected, and the height of each peak is proportional to the relative abundance of that isotope.
A typical mock question gives a mass spectrum of magnesium: a peak at m/z 24 with abundance 79%, at m/z 25 with 10%, and at m/z 26 with 11%. The relative atomic mass is calculated as a weighted average.
Aᵣ = (24 × 79 + 25 × 10 + 26 × 11) ÷ 100 = 2432 ÷ 100 = 24.32
when an arithmetic slip is made. Give the final answer to one decimal place, so Aᵣ = 24.3.
Common mistakes include multiplying percentages as decimals without adding to 100, forgetting to divide by the total abundance, and confusing the most abundant isotope with the relative atomic mass. Remember that the most abundant isotope of magnesium is ²⁴Mg, but its relative atomic mass is 24.3, not 24.
4. Bonding and Structure |
Bonding questions are usually marked on the relationship between structure, bonding and a physical property such as melting point, solubility or electrical conductivity. Always name the structure type first, describe the bonding, then link it to the property.
- Ionic lattices: strong electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged ions acting in all directions. |
- Simple molecular substances: weak intermolecular forces between molecules, so low melting and boiling points. |
- Giant covalent structures: many strong covalent bonds, so very high melting points and insolubility. |
- Metals: a lattice of positive ions in a sea of delocalised electrons, giving good conductivity. |
A frequent comparison question asks why magnesium oxide has a much higher melting point than sodium chloride. Both are ionic, but Mg²⁺ and O²⁻ carry double charges, so the electrostatic attraction is much stronger and more energy is needed to break the lattice.
Another classic is graphite versus diamond. Graphite has layers held by weak forces so the layers slide, it has one delocalised electron per carbon atom so it conducts, and it is used as a lubricant. Diamond has each carbon bonded tetrahedrally to four others, so all electrons are localised and it is a very hard insulator.
Common mistakes: saying covalent bonds 'break' when a simple molecular substance melts (intermolecular forces break, not covalent bonds), and writing 'strong bonds' without saying whether they are ionic, covalent or metallic.
5. Shapes of Molecules and Intermolecular Forces |
Use electron pair repulsion theory: electron pairs repel and arrange themselves as far apart as possible, with lone pairs repelling more strongly than bonding pairs, reducing bond angles by about 2.5° per lone pair.
| H₂O | Bent | V
| CO₂ | Linear |
| BF₃ | Trigonal planar |
Intermolecular forces decide physical properties. London dispersion forces increase with the number of electrons, so boiling points rise down Group 7 from fluorine to iodine. Permanent dipole-dipole forces act between polar molecules such as HCl. Hydrogen bonding requires a hydrogen atom bonded to N, O or F, plus a lone pair on a small electronegative atom in a neighbouring molecule.
This is why water is a liquid while H₂S is a gas, and why ice is less dense than water: each water molecule forms up to four hydrogen bonds in a tetrahedral arrangement, creating an open lattice.
Common mistakes: using the phrase 'hydrogen bonds' for any strong polarity effect, and forgetting to state that hydrogen bonding is a particularly strong type of permanent dipole-dipole attraction rather than a covalent bond.
6. Moles, Equations and Redox |
Mole calculations in Unit 1 and Unit 2 reward a clear layout. Write the balanced equation, convert everything to moles, identify the limiting reagent, then convert back to the quantity asked for.
n = m ÷ M n = c × V volume of gas at RTP = 24 dm³ mol⁻¹
Oxidation numbers are the backbone of redox questions. Oxidation is an increase in oxidation number, reduction is a decrease, and an oxidising agent is itself reduced. In a disproportionation reaction the same element is simultaneously oxidised and reduced, as in the reaction of chlorine with cold dilute sodium hydroxide.
Cl₂ + 2NaOH → NaCl + NaClO + H₂O
Here chlorine in Cl₂ has oxidation number 0; it becomes −1 in NaCl and +1 in NaClO, so it is both reduced and oxidised. Practise assigning oxidation numbers in ions such as MnO₄⁻, Cr₂O₇²⁻ and S₂O₃²⁻, because half-equations frequently appear in six-mark questions.
