1. Gender Confusion: Der, Die, Das | 名词性别混淆
One of the biggest challenges for English speakers is that every German noun has a gender: masculine (der), feminine (die) or neuter (das). A common mistake is guessing the gender or treating nouns as if they matched their English equivalents. Students regularly write 'die Tisch' instead of 'der Tisch', or 'das Zeitung' instead of 'die Zeitung'.
对于英语母语者来说,最大的挑战之一,是每个德语名词都有阴阳中三性。最常见的错误是凭感觉猜词性,或者把名词当作英文对应词来用。学生经常把 'der Tisch'(桌子)写成 'die Tisch',把 'die Zeitung'(报纸)写成 'das Zeitung'。
To overcome this, always learn nouns together with their definite article, never as a bare word. Pay close attention to endings that give reliable clues about gender.
解决办法是:始终把名词和定冠词一起记,不要单独背单词。要特别留意那些能可靠提示词性的词尾。
- Feminine (die): -ung, -heit, -keit, -schaft, -tion, -tät, -ie — die Zeitung, die Freiheit, die Möglichkeit, die Mannschaft, die Nation.
- Neuter (das): -chen, -lein, -ment, -um — das Mädchen, das Fräulein, das Dokument, das Museum.
- Masculine (der): -er, -el, -en (for people and tools), -ling, -ismus — der Computer, der Löffel, der Lehrer, der Frühling.
- 中文提示:以 -ung、-heit、-keit、-schaft、-tion 结尾的多为阴性(die Zeitung 报纸);以 -chen、-lein 结尾的多为中性(das Mädchen 女孩);以 -er、-el、-en 结尾的多为阳性(der Computer 电脑、der Löffel 勺子)。
Beware also of the classic trap: das Mädchen is grammatically neuter, even though it means 'the girl'. Grammar gender and biological gender are two separate systems in German, and examiners love to test this.
还要当心一个经典陷阱:das Mädchen(女孩)在语法上是中性,尽管它指代女性。德语的语法性别和自然性别是两套独立系统,考官非常喜欢考这一点。
2. Case and Article Declension | 冠词变格与四种格
German marks the function of a noun in a sentence with case endings rather than word order. Many candidates memorise only the nominative forms and then use der/die/das everywhere, producing sentences such as 'Ich sehe der Mann' instead of the correct 'Ich sehe den Mann'.
德语靠格的变化而不是语序来标记名词在句子中的功能。许多考生只背了主格形式,然后到处都用 der/die/das,于是写出 'Ich sehe der Mann' 这种句子,而正确形式是 'Ich sehe den Mann'(我看见那个男人)。
Learn the whole table as a block, because the four cases recycle the same few forms.
把整张表当成一个整体来记,因为四种格其实只是反复使用那几个形式而已。
| Case 格 | Masc. 阳 | Fem. 阴 | Neut. 中 | Plural 复 |
| Nominative 主格 | der | die | das | die |
| Accusative 宾格 | den | die | das | die |
| Dative 与格 | dem | der | dem | den (+ -n) |
| Genitive 属格 | des (+ -s) | der | des (+ -s) | der |
Note that only the masculine article changes in the accusative, and the plural dative adds -n to the noun itself: mit den Kindern.
注意:只有阳性冠词在宾格里会变(der → den),而复数与格要在名词本身加 -n,例如 mit den Kindern(和孩子们一起)。
der → den → dem → des
3. Word Order: The Verb in Second Position | 语序:动词居第二位
The German main clause follows a strict rule: the conjugated verb always occupies the second position of the sentence, whatever comes first. Candidates who keep English word order write 'Heute ich gehe zur Schule' instead of 'Heute gehe ich zur Schule'.
德语主句有一条铁律:变位动词永远占据句子的第二个位置,不管第一位放什么成分。照搬英语语序的考生会写成 'Heute ich gehe zur Schule',正确说法是 'Heute gehe ich zur Schule'(今天我上学)。
When an adverb or time expression moves to the front for emphasis, the subject and the verb swap around it — this is called inversion. Practise it with the time-manner-place sequence, which is the natural order of German adverbials.
当副词或时间状语被提前以起强调作用时,主语和动词要围绕它互换位置,这叫“倒装”。可以用“时间—方式—地点”的顺序来练习,这也是德语状语的自然排列顺序。
Position 1 | Verb | Position 3 | ...
- Time 时间: Ich fahre morgen ...
- Manner 方式: ... mit dem Bus ...
- Place 地点: ... nach Berlin.
- 英文:Tomorrow I am travelling to Berlin by bus. 中文:明天我坐公交车去柏林。
In subordinate clauses introduced by weil, dass, wenn, obwohl, the conjugated verb jumps to the very end: 'Ich bleibe zu Hause, weil ich krank bin.' Writing 'weil ich bin krank' is one of the most heavily penalised errors in IGCSE Writing papers.
在以 weil、dass、wenn、obwohl 引导的从句中,变位动词要跳到句末:'Ich bleibe zu Hause, weil ich krank bin.'(我待在家里,因为我病了。)写成 'weil ich bin krank' 是 IGCSE 写作卷里扣分最重的错误之一。
4. Verb Conjugation and Irregular Verbs | 动词变位与不规则动词
Candidates often conjugate regular verbs well but stumble on stem-changing verbs. The pattern only affects the du and er/sie/es forms: a → ä (du fährst, er fährt), e → i or ie (du gibst, er gibt; du siehst, er sieht), and au → äu (du läufst, er läuft).
考生通常能把规则动词变位做对,却在词干变化动词上栽跟头。这类变化只影响 du 和 er/sie/es 两个形式:a → ä(du fährst, er fährt),e → i 或 ie(du gibst, er gibt;du siehst, er sieht),au → äu(du läufst, er läuft)。
The three most important irregular verbs in the whole exam are sein (to be), haben (to have) and werden (to become). They appear in almost every task, and they are also the auxiliary verbs used to build tenses.
整场考试里最重要的三个不规则动词是 sein(是)、haben(有)和 werden(成为)。它们几乎出现在每一道题中,同时也是用来构成时态的助动词。
| Pronoun 人称 | sein | haben | werden |
| ich | bin | habe | werde |
| du | bist | hast | wirst |
| er/sie/es | ist | hat | wird |
| wir/sie/Sie | sind | haben | werden |
| ihr | seid | habt | werdet |
A quick self-check: if your sentence contains 'ich bin' where English uses 'I have' (for example with age — Ich bin 16 Jahre alt), you are correct. German uses sein for age, not haben.
一个快速自查方法:如果英语用 'I have' 的地方你写的是 'ich bin',很可能反而是对的。例如表示年龄 Ich bin 16 Jahre alt(我十六岁)。德语谈年龄用 sein,不用 haben。
5. Separable and Inseparable Verbs | 可分动词与不可分前缀
Separable verbs such as aufstehen, einkaufen, anrufen, mitkommen split in a main clause: the prefix travels to the end of the sentence. The mistake is keeping them glued together, as in 'Ich aufstehe um sieben Uhr'.
可分动词如 aufstehen(起床)、einkaufen(购物)、anrufen(打电话)、mitkommen(一起来),在主句中会被拆开:前缀跑到句子末尾。常见错误是让它们黏在一起,比如 'Ich aufstehe um sieben Uhr'。
The correct version is 'Ich stehe um sieben Uhr auf.' In a subordinate clause the two halves rejoin at the end: '..., weil ich um sieben Uhr aufstehe.'
正确写法是 'Ich stehe um sieben Uhr auf.'(我七点起床。)在从句中两部分会在句末重新合并:'..., weil ich um sieben Uhr aufstehe.'
By contrast, verbs with the inseparable prefixes be-, ge-, er-, ver-, ent-, emp-, zer- never split and never take ge- in the past participle: besuchen → besucht, verstehen → verstanden. Writing 'gebesucht' or 'vergestanden' is immediately noticeable to an examiner.
6. Tenses: Perfect and Preterite | 时态:现在完成时与过去时
In spoken German the perfect tense is the normal way to talk about the past, and it is built with haben or sein plus a past participle. The commonest error is choosing the wrong auxiliary, or forgetting that sein is required with verbs of movement and change of state.
在德语口语中,现在完成时是谈论过去的主要方式,由 haben 或 sein 加过去分词构成。最常见的错误是选错助动词,或者忘记:表示移动和状态变化的动词必须用 sein。
- With sein 用 sein:gehen, fahren, kommen, fliegen, bleiben, werden, sterben — Ich bin nach Wien gefahren.
- With haben 用 haben:most other verbs, including all transitive verbs — Ich habe ein Buch gelesen.
- 中文提示:绝大多数动词用 haben;表示“去、来、飞、留、变成”等位移或状态改变的动词用 sein。
Regular participles are formed with the pattern ge + stem + t (machen → gemacht), while strong verbs change their vowel and end in -en ticiples in families, and remember that the past participle goes to the end of the clause.
规则动词的过去分词结构是 ge + 词干 + t(machen → gemacht),强变化动词则要换元音并以 -en 结尾(schreiben → geschrieben,sprechen → gesprochen)。建议按家族成组记忆强变化分词,并牢记过去分词要放在从句或句子的末尾。
Ich habe gestern einen Film gesehen.
7. Modal Verbs | 情态动词
The six modal verbs — können, müssen, wollen, sollen, dürfen, mögen — follow a unique pattern that candidates frequently break. In the present tense the first and third person singular have no ending at all: ich kann, er kann, never 'ich kanne' or 'er kannt'.
六个情态动词——können(能)、müssen(必须)、wollen(想要)、sollen(应该)、dürfen(被允许)、mögen(喜欢)——遵循一套独特的变位规律,考生常常破坏它。现在时中第一人称和第三人称单数完全没有词尾:ich kann, er kann,绝不能写成 'ich kanne' 或 'er kannt'。
The second rule is the sentence bracket: the modal verb sits in second position, and the main verb appears as a bare infinitive at the very end.
第二条规则是“句子框架”:情态动词在第二位,主动词以不带 zu 的不定式形式出现在句子最末。
Ich muss heute meine Hausaufgaben machen.
Students also confuse müssen and dürfen. müssen means obligation ('must'), while dürfen means permission ('may'). In the negative, 'nicht müssen' means 'do not have to', whereas 'nicht dürfen' means 'must not' — a distinction that regularly appears in Reading comprehension questions.
学生也常混淆 müssen 和 dürfen。müssen 表示义务(必须),dürfen 表示许可(可以)。在否定句中,'nicht müssen' 意为“不必”,而 'nicht dürfen' 意为“禁止、不许”——这一区分在阅读理解的题目里经常出现。
8. Prepositions and Their Cases | 介词与格的搭配
Every German preposition governs a fixed case, and misusing it is one of the most persistent errors at IGCSE level. The dative prepositions must be memorised as a chant: aus, bei, mit, nach, seit, von, zu.
每个德语介词都固定支配某个格,用错格是 IGCSE 阶段最难改掉的错误之一。与格介词要像口诀一样背下来:aus, bei, mit, nach, seit, von, zu。
- Dative only 只接与格:aus, bei, mit, nach, seit, von, zu, gegenüber — mit dem Freund, nach der Schule.
- Accusative only 只接宾格:durch, für, gegen, ohne, um, bis, entlang — für meinen Bruder, ohne meinen Vater.
- Two-way 静动介词:in, an, auf, über, unter, vor, hinter, neben, zwischen.
The two-way prepositions are governed by a simple logic: movement with a destination takes the accusative, while position or location takes the dative. Compare Ich gehe in die Schule (motion, accusative) with Ich bin in der Schule (location, dative).
静动介词遵循一条简单逻辑:表示有方向的移动用宾格,表示位置或状态用与格。比较 Ich gehe in die Schule(我去学校,移动→宾格)和 Ich bin in der Schule(我在学校里,位置→与格)。
A useful memory hook is that dative prepositions often answer 'where?' in a static sense, while accusative prepositions answer 'where to?' or express opposition.
一个实用的记忆窍门:与格介词多回答静态的“在哪里”,宾格介词多回答“去哪里”,或表达对立、方向性的关系。
9. Adjective Endings | 形容词词尾变化
Adjective endings are the single most feared topic in IGCSE German, and the mistakes are usually caused by trying to learn dozens of separate rules instead of one system. The ending is decided by three questions: which article precedes the adjective, what gender is the noun, and which case is required.
形容词词尾是 IGCSE 德语中最令人头疼的一个考点,而出错的原因往往是试图背诵几十条孤立规则,而不是掌握一个系统。词尾取决于三个问题:形容词前面是哪种冠词?名词是什么性?句子需要哪个格?
- Weak 弱变化(after der/die/das):-e in the nominative singular, -en everywhere else — der alte Mann, mit dem alten Mann.
- Mixed 混合变化(after ein/kein/mein):-e or -en, but the adjective must show the gender where the article cannot — ein alter Mann, eine alte Frau.
- Strong 强变化(no article):the adjective takes the ending the article would have had — alter Wein, mit altem Wein.
The golden rule to remember: if the article already shows the case and gender clearly, the adjective only needs -e or -en. If the article is silent about it, the adjective has to carry the signal itself.
要记住的黄金法则是:如果冠词已经清楚显示了格和性,形容词只需 -e 或 -en;如果冠词没有显示,形容词就必须自己承担这个信号。
das neue Haus → ein neues Haus
10. Spelling, Capitalisation and Umlauts | 拼写、大小写与变音符号
Careless spelling costs marks even when the grammar is perfect. The three most frequent spelling errors at IGCSE are missing capital letters on nouns, wrong use of ß versus ss, and dropped umlauts.
即使语法完全正确,拼写马虎也会白白丢分。IGCSE 阶段最常见的三类拼写错误是:名词忘大写、ß 与 ss 混用、遗漏变音符号。
- Capital letters 大写:all nouns take a capital letter — das Haus, die Schule, der Freund. This is never optional.
- ß vs ss:use ß after a long vowel or diphthong (Straße, heiß, groß) and ss after a short vowel (Fluss, muss, dass). Swiss German uses ss everywhere, but CAIE expects standard German.
- Umlauts 变音:schon means 'already' while schön means '
