📚 Year 11 OCR Psychology: Mastering the Experimental / Practical Assessment | Year 11 OCR
The experimental and practical assessment is at the heart of the OCR GCSE Psychology specification. It challenges you to design investigations, handle data and critically evaluate research – just like a professional psychologist. This comprehensive guide breaks down the essential knowledge and skills you need to excel in your exam and any practical tasks.
1. Assessment Objectives & The Exam |
Your final grade is shaped by three Assessment Objectives (AOs). AO1 tests knowledge and understanding of key concepts, theories and research methods. AO2 requires you to apply your knowledge to novel scenarios, such as identifying variables or designing a study. AO3 demands evaluation, analysis and the ability to draw conclusions, including discussing strengths and limitations of methods and studies. In the exam, the ‘Research Methods’ topic appears in both Paper 1 and Paper 2, and you will encounter mandatory questions on experimental design, data analysis and ethics. The practical component also includes opportunities to conduct your own mini-investigations, which directly inform exam questions.
2. Research Aims, Hypotheses & Variables |
Every experiment begins with a clear research aim – a general statement of what the study intends to investigate. From the aim, you develop a testable hypothesis. In OCR Psychology, you must be able to write an experimental hypothesis (predicting the effect of the IV on the DV) and a null hypothesis (stating there will be no effect or any difference is due to chance). Operationalisation is crucial: you need to define exactly how the IV and DV will be manipulated or measured. For example, instead of ‘memory will be affected by noise’, a precise hypothesis states: ‘Participants who learn a word list in silence will recall significantly more words than those who learn it while listening to loud music.’
The independent variable (IV) is the factor you deliberately change or manipulate. The dependent variable (DV) is the outcome you measure. You must also identify potential extraneous variables – any other factors that could influence the DV, such as time of day, participant mood or previous ability. If an extraneous variable varies systematically along with the IV, it becomes a confounding variable and can ruin the internal validity of your experiment.
3. Experimental Designs |
Experimental design refers to how you allocate participants to the different levels of your IV. The three main designs you must know for OCR GCSE are Independent Groups, Repeated Measures and Matched Pairs. In an independent groups design, different participants are used in each condition. This avoids order effects but can be affected by participant variables – individual differences may distort the results. Random allocation to conditions helps to minimise this problem.
A repeated measures design involves the same participants taking part in all conditions. This controls for participant variables and requires fewer participants, but it introduces order effects (such as practice or fatigue). Counterbalancing – where half the participants experience condition A first and half condition B first – can reduce order effects. In a matched pairs design, participants are paired on key characteristics (e.g. IQ score) and then one member of each pair is randomly assigned to each condition. This design reduces participant variables without order effects but is time-consuming and can be difficult to achieve perfectly matched pairs.
4. Sampling Methods |
The target population is the entire group you want to draw conclusions about. Your sample is the smaller group who actually take part. How you select your sample matters because it affects how well your findings generalise. In OCR exams, you need to describe and evaluate random, opportunity, stratified, systematic and volunteer sampling. A random sample gives every member of the target population an equal chance of being selected, reducing sampling bias, but it requires a complete list of the population and can still throw up an unrepresentative group by chance.
Opportunity sampling involves selecting whoever is available and willing, which is quick and easy but often biased because the sample may share similar traits. Stratified sampling divides the population into subgroups (strata) and then randomly selects from each stratum in proportion to its size. This produces a highly representative sample but is complex and costly. Systematic sampling uses a predetermined system, like choosing every 5th name on a register, which is objective but still can accidentally lead to bias if the list is ordered in a particular way. Volunteer (self-selected) sampling relies on people responding to adverts; it yields motivated participants but they may be more co-operative than the general population, affecting conclusions.
5. Ethical Considerations |
All psychological research in the UK must follow the British Psychological Society (BPS) ethical guidelines. For GCSE, you must be able to identify ethical issues and suggest solutions. Key principles include: informed consent – participants should know the true nature of the study and agree to take part without pressure. If deception is necessary, it must be justified and followed by a thorough debrief. Participants must be protected from physical and psychological harm, and their data must remain confidential. They also have the right to withdraw at any time without penalty.
A common exam tip is to link ethical safeguards directly to the research situation. For example, if a study uses children, you cannot simply rely on their own consent; parental consent is needed. When discussing ethical problems, always propose a realistic fix – such as replacing a live animal stimulus with a video, or offering a full debrief that restores participants’ well-being. A well-structured practical investigation must include an ethics section explaining how the researcher addressed each of these principles before data collection began.
6. Data Collection Techniques & Controls |
Although experiments are the focus, you must also understand other methods that appear in research methods questions. Experiments involve the direct manipulation of an IV under controlled conditions (laboratory), in natural settings (field), or capitalising on naturally occurring changes (natural experiment). Questionnaires and interviews gather self-report data, while observations record behaviour according to a coding scheme. For practical assessments, you will normally carry out a simple experiment, often a memory or perception test. Standardised procedures are essential: all participants should receive exactly the same instructions and materials, except for the IV manipulation.
Controls are vital to maintain validity. For a lab experiment, you may control environmental variables like noise and lighting, use randomisation to distribute participant variables, or employ counterbalancing to control order effects. Demand characteristics occur when participants form an idea of the study’s purpose and change their behaviour – using a single-blind procedure can help. Investigator effects, where the researcher unintentionally influences the outcome, can be reduced by a double-blind design or by using standardised recordings.
7. Descriptive Statistics |
OCR GCSE Psychology requires you to calculate and interpret measures of central tendency (mean, median, mode) and a measure of dispersion (range). The mean is the arithmetic average, sensitive to all scores but easily distorted by outliers. The median is the middle value in an ordered list; it is unaffected by extreme scores but ignores the precise values of most data. The mode is the most frequent score – useful for categorical data but sometimes there can be more than one mode. The range simply subtracts the lowest from the highest value, giving a quick sense of spread, though it relies only on two scores.
OCR GCSE
Mean = Σx ÷ n Range = highest score – lowest score
In the exam, always justify your choice of statistic. Use the mean when data are symmetrical without extreme outliers. Choose the median if the data are skewed. The mode is best for nominal (category) data. When asked to evaluate a statistic, mention its sensitivity, resistance to outliers and loss of information. You might also be asked to spot a miscalculated mean or incorrect range in a short scenario.
8. Data Presentation & Interpretation |
You need to select an appropriate graph or table and interpret trends from it. Bar charts are suitable for comparing averages across different conditions where the IV is categorical. Histograms display the distribution of continuous scores – bars must touch to show the continuity. Scattergrams (scatterplots) show the relationship between two measured variables, often used in correlational studies. When drawing graphs, remember to label both axes with the correct variable name and unit, give the graph a clear title, and use a consistent scale.
Interpreting a graph is about describing the pattern and explaining what it means in the context of the hypothesis. Instead of just saying “the bar for silence is higher”, a higher-band answer will state: “Participants in the silence condition recalled a mean of 14.2 words, whereas those in the noise condition recalled only 8.6 words. This suggests that silence improved memory recall, consistent with the experimental hypothesis.” Always refer back to the aim and hypothesis.
9. Evaluating Studies: Reliability, Validity & Bias |
Evaluation is a high-mark skill. Reliability concerns consistency. If a study were repeated, would you get similar results? Internal reliability asks whether the procedures were standardised and measures (such as a word list) were consistent. External reliability refers to replicability across different contexts or times. To improve reliability, you can use clear standardised instructions, pilot your materials, and employ multiple measures.
Validity asks whether the study measures what it intends to measure. Internal validity can be threatened by confounding variables, demand characteristics and investigator effects. External validity (including ecological validity) is the extent to which findings can be generalised to real-life settings, other populations and beyond. A study may be reliable but not valid – for instance, a timer that consistently adds 2 seconds extra gives reliable but invalid readings. In your evaluation, always link a strength or limitation to a specific feature of the study and suggest a concrete improvement.
Sampling bias, cultural bias and gender bias are also common evaluation points. For example, if a memory experiment uses only university students, the results may not apply to elderly adults or younger children. To strengthen evaluation, use the P.E.E.L. structure (Point, Evidence, Explanation, Link) and always offer a balanced discussion – no design is completely perfect.
10. The Practical Investigation & Report Structure |
For the practical component, you may design and carry out a simple experiment and write it up in a formal report. The standard structure follows an IMRaD format. The Introduction includes background research, the aim and the experimental/alternative hypothesis plus the null hypothesis. The Method is broken into Design, Participants, Apparatus/Materials and Procedure. In the Design subsection, state
