1. The OPVL Formula for Source Analysis | 来源分析的 OPVL 公式
The OPVL formula (Origin, Purpose, Value, Limitation) is the gold standard for source evaluation in CAIE History. Begin by stating the Origin: who created the source, when, and what type of source it is. Then identify its Purpose: what the creator intended to achieve with a specific audience. Use these to assess Value: what a historian can learn from the source given its origin and purpose. Finally, admit Limitations: what the source cannot tell us, or what problems arise from its origin and purpose. Apply this formula to every source you are asked to analyse, never forgetting that Value and Limitation must be specifically linked to the content of the source.
- O – Origin: Author, date, type, context.
- P – Purpose: Intended audience and goal (to inform, persuade, justify, etc.).
- V – Value: What insights it offers, e.g. an eyewitness view or official record.
- L – Limitation: What it omits, biases, representativeness, reliability issues.
2. The PEE Paragraph Formula | PEE
Every analytical paragraph in a CAIE History essay should follow the PEE structure: Point, Evidence, Explanation. State your Point clearly in the first sentence – this is the analytical claim you are making. Then back it up with precise, concrete Evidence: a fact, date, statistic, quote or reference. Finally, Explain how this evidence proves your point and why it matters for the question. Without the Explanation, you are just describing events. With it, you are analysing. For top marks, link your explanation back to the question's key concept, such as causation, change or significance.
| P – Point | A clear analytical statement that directly answers the question. |
| E – Evidence | Specific factual information or a source reference to support your point. |
| E – Explanation | Shows how the evidence proves the point and addresses the question's key concept. |
Point + Evidence + Explanation = High-Quality Historical Analysis
3. The Causation Equation |
t causes. Write it as: Long-term causes + Short-term causes + Trigger event = Historical outcome. Long-term causes are deep-rooted factors that build up over decades or centuries (e.g. social tensions, economic structures). Short-term causes are more immediate developments in the months or years before the event (e.g. political crises, diplomatic failures). The trigger is the immediate spark that sets everything in motion (e.g. an assassination, a specific decision). A strong answer will also weigh the relative importance of these causes, perhaps arguing that the trigger would have been insignificant without the long-term pressures.
ng-term Causes (deep-rooted) + Short-term Causes (proximate) + Trigger (immediate) = Event
4. The Change & Continuity Spectrum |
ical Transformation to Complete Continuity. Use analytical verbs to describe the type of change: was it rapid, gradual, superficial, or structural? l, much in daily life often remained the same. To demonstrate historical judgement, identify what stayed the same and explain why continuity can be just as significant as change. The formula: Rate of change + Depth of change + Distribution of change = Overall assessment.
Continuity ←━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━→ Radical Change
5. The Utility Theorem (Reliability ≠ Utility) |
A common mistake is to think that an unreliable source is useless. The 'Utility Theorem' teaches that a source' propaganda, or perspective of its creator. When evaluating utility, ask: what can this source reveal about the topic? What can it reveal about the author and their context? How can it be cross-referenced with other sources? lity = Information about the topic + Information about the context/mindset of the creator.
6. The 'Why Significant?'
Determining historical significance is a core skill. Use the '5 R's' criteria to build your argument. An event, person or development is significant if it was: Remarkable – people at the time noticed it; Remembered – it has been commemorated or taught; Resulting in change – it led to deep, wide-ranging consequences; Revealing – it sheds light on broader aspects of the period; and Resonant – it still matters to people today. Not every criterion must be met, but the strongest answers will argue using multiple R's and show that significance can vary depending on perspective (e.g. women's history vs military history).
7. The Compare & Contrast Matrix |
Comparison questions ask you to identify similarities and differences between two case studies, periods, or interpretations. Avoid writing about one case then the other in two separate blocks. Instead, use a comparative matrix approach to draw direct points of comparison. For each identified similarity, explain why they were alike (e.g. common causes or parallel conditions). For each difference, explain the diverging factors. A useful formula: Similarity or Difference + specific evidence from both sides + reason for the similarity/difference. Conclude with an overall judgement about whether the cases were more similar or different, and why that judgement matters.
| Aspect | Case Study 1 | Case Study 2 | Comparison Judgement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cause | Evidence | Evidence | Similar / Different because... |
8. Source Cross-Referencing Formula |
When analysing multiple sources, you must cross-reference them to build a reliable picture. The formula is: Corroboration strengthens reliability; Contradiction demands explanation. If two independent sources agree on a point, their combined value is greater than each alone. If they contradict each other, do not just say one is right and the other wrong. Instead, explain the contradiction by considering their different origins, purposes, or perspectives. Sometimes a contradiction is itself useful, because it reveals a contemporary debate or disagreement. Your conclusion about the sources should reflect a balanced synthesis: 'Taken together, Sources A and B suggest..., although Source C complicates this by...'
9. The Judgement Scale for 'How Far' Questions | “多大程度上”问题的评判尺度
'How far do you agree?' or 'To what extent?' estions require a balanced, evaluative answer. Think of your conclusion along a scale from 'fully agree' to 'fully disagree' ly, reach a nuanced judgement that specifies the degree to which you agree, and under what conditions or in which respects. Avoid a 'some agree, some disagree' fence-sitting. Instead, use a definitive scale: ' justified because..., however, in the crucial area of X, the statement is less convincing.' he formula: Main argument + Counter-argument + Weighted conclusion = High-level judgement.
Fully Disagree ←━━━━━━━━━━ Scale of Judgement ━━━━━━━━━━→ Fully Agree
10. Historical Interpretation Model |
CAIE History often tests your awareness that the past is interpreted differently by different historians. Use the interpretation model to structure your analysis of these views. Typically, there is an Orthodox interpretation (the traditional view that emerged soon after events), a Revisionist interpretation (which challenges the orthodox view using new evidence or approaches), and sometimes a Post-revisionist historian + Contemporary context + Access to sources + Ideological perspective = Differing interpretation. Always link the interpretation to the specific evidence each historian uses or ignores.
11. The Narrative Account Formula |
For 'Write a narrative account' or 'Describe' questions, simply listing events in chronological order is not enough. You must show how events were connected. Use the formula: Event A led to Event B because..., which in turn created conditions for Event C. Your narrative should demonstrate causation and consequence at every stage. Use connective analytical phrases such as 'This escalated the crisis because...', 'As a direct result...', 'The consequence of this action was...'. Avoid first-person storytelling; maintain an analytical tone. A good narrative answers not just 'what happened' but 'why one thing led to another'.
12. The Importance Ranking Theorem |
When a question asks 'Which factor was most important?', you need a systematic way to rank causes or consequences. The Importance Ranking Theorem suggests three weighing criteria: Scale (how many people were affected? over what geographic area?), Depth (how profound or lasting was the impact?), and Consequentiality (did this factor trigger other major changes?). Use these to compare factors. Additionally, consider the counterfactual: if this factor had been absent, how differently would events have unfolded? A factor that would have changed the course of history by its absence is usually more important than one that merely accelerated an already existing trend. Always state your ranking criteria explicitly in the introduction.
