📚 Year 11 CAIE Accounting: Interdisciplinary Integrated Question Practice | CAIE
Interdisciplinary questions in CAIE IGCSE Accounting are designed to test how well you can combine numerical accuracy, analytical thinking, and real-world business insight within a single task. These questions often weave together topics such as financial statement preparation, ratio analysis, inventory valuation, partnership appropriations, and incomplete records, requiring you to move fluently between computation and commentary. A single scenario may ask you to build a manufacturing account, value closing inventory under AVCO, prepare an income statement, calculate four ratios, and then advise the owner on whether to expand. The marks are never awarded for arithmetic alone.
1. Understanding the Nature of Interdisciplinary Questions |
An interdisciplinary question does not simply test isolated skills: it asks you to apply knowledge from several syllabus areas to a single business scenario. You may be asked to prepare a manufacturing account, compute inventory under AVCO, and then evaluate liquidity, all within the same case study. The examiner expects you to show how one accounting figure affects another and to draw reasoned conclusions supported by numbers.
For example, a change in inventory valuation method can alter gross profit and, consequently, the gross profit margin, which then influences a lender's view of the business. That chain - method, profit, ratio, decision - is exactly what integrated questions reward.
- Computation marks reward correct figures with correct labels and units.
- Analysis marks reward sensible interpretation of those figures.
- Evaluation marks reward a judgement with a reason and a limitation.
2. Core Syllabus Areas That Get Combined |
Integrated tasks draw from a predictable set of syllabus areas. Knowing the usual combinations helps you anticipate the structure of a long question before you start writing.
| Partnership appropriations 合伙企业利润分配 | Links profit to capital and current accounts 把利润连接到资本账户与经常账户 |
3. Reading the Scenario Before You Calculate |
Most lost marks in integrated questions come from misreading the scenario rather than from weak arithmetic. Before calculating anything, identify the business type, the accounting period, the currency, and the command words used in each part.
- State / Identify - one short answer, no working needed.
- Calculate - show the formula and the substitution.
- Prepare - produce a properly titled and labelled statement.
- Evaluate / Advise - give a judgement, a reason and a limitation.
Underline every date and every stock figure as you read. Dates determine whether a balance is opening or closing, and confusing the two is the single most common cause of a wrong cost of sales figure.
4. The Manufacturing Account and Cost Classification |
A manufacturing account converts raw material and factory costs into the cost of goods produced, which then becomes the opening figure for the trading section. The classification of costs determines every figure below it.
Prime cost = Direct materials + Direct labour + Direct expenses
Production cost = Prime cost + Factory overheads
Cost of goods produced = Production cost + Opening WIP − Closing WIP
Cost of sales = Cost of goods produced + Opening finished goods − Closing finished goods
Worked illustration: opening raw materials $8,000, purchases $52,000, closing raw materials $6,000, so direct materials = $54,000. Direct labour $40,000 and direct expenses $6,000 give a prime cost of $100,000. Factory overheads of $30,000 give a production cost of $130,000; with opening WIP $5,000 and closing WIP $7,000, the cost of goods produced is $128,000.
- Royalties paid per unit produced are a direct expense, not an overhead.
- Factory rent, factory supervisor salaries and factory depreciation are production overheads.
- Office salaries, marketing and delivery to customers are administrative or selling costs, never production overheads.
5. Inventory Valuation: FIFO, AVCO and Profit Effects |
When prices are rising, the choice of inventory method changes both the closing inventory value and the reported profit. FIFO leaves the older, cheaper units in cost of sales and the newer, dearer units in closing inventory, producing a higher closing inventory, a lower cost of sales and a higher gross profit. AVCO smooths price movements by recalculating a weighted average cost after each purchase.
AVCO unit cost = Total cost of units available ÷ Total units available
Illustration of the profit effect: revenue $200,000, opening inventory $20,000, purchases $110,000, closing inventory $30,000 gives cost of sales of $100,000 and gross profit of $100,000, a gross profit margin of 50%. If AVCO raises closing inventory to $34,000, cost of sales falls to $96,000 and gross profit rises to $104,000, a margin of 52%. Same trading, different accounting policy, different ratio.
- Apply the consistency principle: do not switch method without disclosure.
- Apply prudence: inventory is stated at the lower of cost and net realisable value.
- Always state the method in your answer; unsupported figures earn no valuation marks.
6. Ratio Analysis as the Analytical Backbone |
Ratios are the bridge between the numbers you have calculated and the commentary the examiner wants. Learn the formulas precisely, because a formula written incorrectly loses the method mark even if the final figure happens to be right.
Gross profit margin = Gross profit ÷ Revenue × 100
Mark-up = Gross profit ÷ Cost of sales × 100
Current ratio = Current assets ÷ Current liabilities
Quick ratio = (Current assets − Inventory) ÷ Current liabilities
Inventory turnover = Cost of sales ÷ Average inventory
Using the figures above: current assets $60,000 and current liabilities $ ÷ 2) = 4 times, or about 91 days. A ratio on its own proves nothing; it must be compared with a previous year, a competitor, or a target.
7. Partnership Appropriations and Equity Changes |
In a partnership, profit is not simply split in the profit-sharing ratio. Interest on capital, partners' salaries and interest on drawings are applied first, and only the residual profit is shared.
Shareable profit = Net profit + Interest on drawings − Interest on capital − Partners' salaries
Worked illustration: net profit $70,000; capital A $60,000 and B $40,000 with interest on capital at 5% gives $3,000 and $2,000; salaries are A $12,000 and B $8,000; interest on drawings is A $300 and B $200. Shareable profit = 70,000 + 500 − 5,000 − 20,000 = $45,500, shared 3 : 2 as A $27,300 and B $18,200.
- Interest on capital is an expense of appropriation, not a business expense in the income statement.
- Interest on drawings is added back because it increases the profit available for sharing.
- Capital accounts record permanent investment; current accounts record appropriations, drawings and the profit share.
8. Incomplete Records and Statement of Affairs |
Incomplete records questions ask you to reconstruct figures that were never recorded. Two techniques cover almost every case: the capital comparison method for profit, and the gross profit method for missing revenue or inventory.
Profit = Closing capital + Drawings − Capital introduced − Opening capital
Revenue = Cost of sales ÷ (1 − Gross profit margin)
Worked illustration: if the gross profit margin is 25% and cost of sales is $90,000, then revenue = 90,000 ÷ 0.75 = $120,000 and gross profit = $30,000. If instead the mark-up is 25%, revenue = 90,000 × 1.25 = $112,500. Reading margin as mark-up overturns the whole answer, so check the wording twice.
- A statement of affairs is a list of assets and liabilities used to derive capital.
- Drawings reduce capital and must be added back when calculating profit.
- Capital introduced is not profit and must be deducted.
9. Linking Statements: The Chain of Figures |
The power of an integrated answer lies in showing that the statements are one connected system, not three separate exercises. Every figure you calculate should be traceable forwards or backwards.
| Stage 阶段 | Output 产出 | Feeds into 流向 |
| Manufacturing account 制造账户 | Cost of goods produced 制成品成本 | Cost of sales 销售成本 |
| Income statement 损益表 | Gross and net profit 毛利与净利 | Appropriation and ratios 利润分配与比率 |
| Statement of financial position 财务状况表 | Capital and inventory 资本与存货 | Liquidity and capital ratios 流动性与资本比率 |
If your gross profit margin looks implausible, work backwards: the error is usually in the cost of sales calculation, not in the ratio formula.
10. Evaluation and Commentary: Writing for the Marks |
Evaluation marks are earned by structure, not by length. A strong evaluative paragraph states the point, quotes the figure, explains the consequence and then acknowledges a limitation or an alternative.
- Point: the quick ratio is below 1, so the business may struggle to pay short-term debts.
- Evidence: the figure fell from 0.9 : 1 to 0.75 : 1 because inventory rose faster than current liabilities.
- Consequence: suppliers may demand cash on delivery, raising operating costs.
- Limitation: the ratio ignores the timing of cash inflows and the quality of the receivables.
Never write that the business is 'good' or 'bad' without naming the figure that supports the claim. Vague praise scores zero no matter how confident it sounds.
11. Common Pitfalls and Marking Standards |
Small technical errors destroy otherwise excellent answers. Most of them are avoidable with a two-minute checking routine at the end of the paper.
- Mixing opening and closing inventory: always label which is which in the working.
- Confusing margin and mark-up: margin is based on revenue, mark-up on cost.
- Omitting currency symbols and thousands separators: $24,000, not 24000.
24000。 - Rounding too early: keep full figures in the calculator until the final answer.
- Writing narrative where a statement is required: the format itself carries marks.
Marking is hierarchical: a method mark is available even if the final figure is wrong, provided your working is clear, but no mark is available for a correct final figure with no visible working.
