Signified – The mental concept triggered by the signifier. When you see or hear the signifier, you think of the plant, its petals, thorns and scent.

Index – A sign that has a direct, causal connection to what it represents. Smoke is an index of fire; a footprint indicates a presence.
Symbol – A sign where the relationship between signifier and signified is purely conventional or learned, such as the red heart for love or the alphabet itself.
Memory Tip: Think of the 'three i's' – icon resembles, index connects physically, and symbol is agreed by society.
