This quick reference handbook sets out the essential theories and models you need for the Cambridge IGCSE examination, presented in a clear, bilingual format to support your revision and application to unseen texts.
1. Semiotics – Roland Barthes | 1.
Roland Barthes' semiotic theory explains that media texts communicate meaning through signs. Each sign is made up of a signifier – the physical form (e.g. a red rose) – and a signified – the mental concept it triggers (e.g. romance).
Barthes identified two orders of signification. Denotation is the literal, dictionary meaning of a sign. Connotation is the deeper, culturally specific meaning that a sign carries; for example, a rose might connote passion or political allegiance depending on the context.
Barthes also introduced the concept of myth, which is a third order of signification. A myth is a dominant ideology or widely shared belief that is presented as natural and universal. When the media repeatedly associates certain signs with particular values, these associations become naturalised myths, such as the myth that thinness equals beauty.
2. Narrative Structure – Todorov | 2.
Tzvetan Todorov proposed that all narratives follow a recognisable five-stage structure. His equilibrium theory suggests that stories begin with a state of balance, are disrupted, and ultimately resolve back to a new equilibrium.
The five stages are: (1) Equilibrium – normality and order; (2) Disruption – an event or character disturbs the equilibrium; (3) Recognition of disruption – characters realise the disorder; (4) Attempt to repair damage – a quest or struggle to restore order; (5) New equilibrium – a transformed state is attained, often with lessons learned.
This model can be applied to almost any film, television episode or news story. It helps you recognise how media texts create narrative tension and guide audience expectations.
3. Character Archetypes – Propp | 3.
Vladimir Propp analysed Russian folk tales and identified seven recurring character archetypes, often called the 'sphere of action'. Although originally applied to fairy tales, these archetypes are frequently found in modern media narratives.
The seven archetypes are: (1) The Hero – the protagonist who seeks something; (2) The Villain – opposes the hero; (3) The Dispatcher – sends the hero on the quest; (4) The Donor – gives the hero a magical item or advice; (5) The Helper – assists the hero; (6) The Princess – the reward or sought-after person; (7) The False Hero – appears to help but disrupts.
Recognising these archetypes in advertising, film or gaming allows you to discuss how characters are constructed to drive narrative and align audience sympathies.
4. Binary Oppositions – Lévi-Strauss | 4.
Claude Lévi-Strauss argued that meaning in narratives is produced through binary oppositions – pairs of contrasting ideas that create conflict and drive stories forward. Common opposites include good vs evil, youth vs age, civilisation vs wilderness.
Lévi-Strauss emphasised that the conflict between these opposing forces reveals a culture's underlying values and helps maintain social order by defining what is acceptable and what is not. A news story about 'us' versus 'them' uses this structure.
Applying binary opposites to a text means identifying the core opposition and analysing how the narrative resolves the tension, often favouring one side as the dominant ideology.
5. Encoding/Decoding – Stuart Hall | 5.
Stuart Hall's communication model proposes that a media text is encoded with meanings by its producers, but audiences do not simply absorb these meanings; they decode the text actively based on their own social and cultural contexts.
Hall outlined three reading positions: (1) Dominant or Preferred Reading – the audience accepts the intended meaning fully; (2) Negotiated Reading – the audience partly accepts and partly rejects the message, adapting it to fit their experiences; (3) Oppositional Reading – the audience understands the preferred meaning but rejects it and constructs an alternative interpretation.
This theory reminds us that meaning is not fixed and that the same advert or film can be understood in radically different ways by different audience groups.
6. Uses and Gratifications – Blumler & Katz | 6.
Blumler and Katz shifted the focus from what media do to people to what people do with media. Their uses and gratifications model suggests that audiences actively choose media to satisfy specific needs and desires.
The four main gratifications are: (1) Information – to learn, seek advice or satisfy curiosity; (2) Personal Identity – to reinforce personal values and find models of behaviour; (3) Integration and Social Interaction – to connect with others and gain a sense of belonging; (4) Entertainment – to escape, relax or enjoy emotional release.
For a YouTube tutorial, the gratification could be information; for a reality TV show, it might be a mix of personal identity and entertainment. A successful media product often combines multiple gratifications to attract a broad audience.
7. Representation – Stuart Hall | 7.
Stuart Hall argued that representation is the way in which meaning is given to the things depicted in media. It is not a simple reflection of reality; instead, media representations construct reality through language, signs and images.
Hall distinguished three approaches to representation: (1) The Reflective Approach – meaning lies in the object itself and media reflect it truthfully; (2) The Intentional Approach – meaning is imposed by the creator; (3) The Constructionist Approach – meaning is constructed through systems of representation and shared cultural codes.
In media analysis, we apply the constructionist approach to examine how groups, events and ideas are represented and what ideologies are being reinforced or challenged. Stereotypes are a key part of this process.
8. Genre Theory – Steve Neale | 8.
Steve Neale sees genre as a system of 'repetition and difference'. He argues that genres depend on familiar conventions and audience expectations, but they must also introduce innovation to remain interesting and commercially viable.
According to Neale, genres are not static: they evolve over time through hybridisation and by borrowing from other genres. For example, a horror film might incorporate comedy elements to create a new sub-genre. Audiences enjoy recognising the familiar patterns while being surprised by novel elements.
Examining genre helps you discuss how media institutions target specific audience segments and how a text conforms to or subverts generic conventions for effect.
9. Stereotypes – Richard Dyer | 9.
Richard Dyer offers a critical perspective on stereotyping as a media practice. He argues that stereotypes function as shortcuts, reducing complex individuals to a few exaggerated traits so that they can be instantly recognised by audiences.
Dyer highlights four key aspects: (1) Stereotypes are an ordering process that categorises people; (2) They reinforce the boundaries of acceptability by defining what is 'normal' and what is 'other'; (3) They often emerge in situations of power inequality where the dominant group defines the subordinate group; (4) The world presented through stereotypes is always a distorted one, yet it can feel like reality.
Media texts from adverts to news bulletins rely on stereotypes to communicate quickly, but critical analysis must question whose interests these simplified representations serve.
10. Media Language Toolkit – Camera, Mise-en-scène, Sound | 10.
Beyond abstract theories, media language includes concrete technical codes. Camera shots and angles create specific relationships with the subject: an extreme close-up emphasises emotion, a low angle makes a character appear powerful, and a pan follows action horizontally. A high angle can make a figure seem vulnerable.
Mise-en-scène is everything placed in front of the camera – setting, props, costume, lighting and colour. High-key lighting conveys optimism, while low-key lighting creates mystery and shadows. The colour red might connote danger or passion.
Sound operates in two dimensions: diegetic sound originates from within the story world (dialogue, footsteps); non-diegetic sound is added for the audience (voice-over, soundtrack). Parallel sound matches the mood of the visuals, whereas contrapuntal sound creates irony or unease.
Combining these micro elements consistently is what allows a media text to encode a coherent message. Whenever you analyse a sequence, identify at least one example from each element group – camera, mise-en-scène, editing and sound – to build a rich, layered response.
