1. Semiotics (Barthes) | 符号学(巴特)
Meaning = Signifier + Signified
Roland Barthes' semiotic theory states that meaning in media texts is constructed through signs. A sign comprises a signifier -- the physical form such as an image, word or sound -- and a signified -- the mental concept it evokes. The relationship between them produces denotation and connotation, shaping the audience's interpretation.
罗兰·巴特的符号学理论指出,媒体文本的意义由符号建构。一个符号包含能指(图像、文字或声音等物理形式)和所指(唤起的心理概念)。二者之间的联系产生外延与内涵,塑造受众的解读。
Barthes further distinguished between denotation, the literal first-order meaning, and connotation, the cultural associations layered on top. Over time, repeated connotations can become myths -- dominant ideas presented as natural and common sense. In media analysis you must identify these constructed meanings.
巴特进一步区分了外延(字面的第一层意义)和内涵(叠加其上的文化联想)。长期重复的内涵可变成神话——被呈现为自然常识的主导观念。在媒体分析中你必须识别这些被建构的意义。
2. Narrative Theory (Todorov) | 叙事理论(托多罗夫)
Narrative = Equilibrium → Disruption → Recognition → Attempt to Repair → New Equilibrium
Tzvetan Todorov proposed that most narratives follow a five-stage structure. They begin with a state of equilibrium, which is then disrupted by an event. Characters recognise the disruption and attempt to repair it, leading to a new equilibrium, often changed from the original. This formula reveals how stories create and resolve tension.
茨维坦·托多罗夫提出,大多数叙事遵循五阶段结构。叙事始于均衡状态,随后被某一事件打破。角色认识到这一破坏并试图修复,最终达到新的均衡,常已不同于最初。该公式揭示了故事如何制造并解决张力。
When applying this to media texts, look for the inciting incident and the moment of recognition. Even short extracts can show elements of this progression. Remember that the new equilibrium may not return everything to normal; it reflects a transformation, which is key to understanding character and ideological messages.
将此理论应用于媒体文本时,寻找催化事件与识别时刻。即使短片断也能展现这一进程的要素。记住,新均衡未必一切如初,它反映了一种转变,这对于理解角色与意识形态信息至关重要。
3. Character Types (Propp) | 角色类型(普罗普)
Narrative Function = Hero + Villain + Princess + Donor + Dispatcher + Helper + False Hero
Vladimir Propp analysed Russian folktales and identified seven recurring character types defined by their narrative function. The Hero seeks something or goes on a quest, the Villain opposes the hero, and the Princess is the reward or object of quest. The Donor provides a magical object or assistance, the Dispatcher sends the hero on the quest, the Helper aids the hero, and the False Hero initially appears good but is revealed as deceptive.
弗拉基米尔·普罗普分析了俄罗斯民间故事,识别出七种按叙事功能定义的反复出现的角色类型。英雄寻求某物或进行探险,反派对抗英雄,公主是奖赏或追寻目标。赠予者提供神奇道具或帮助,派遣者派英雄踏上征程,帮手辅助英雄,假英雄起初伪装善良但终被揭露。
Modern media texts often blend or subvert these types, but the underlying functions remain useful. For instance, a mentor could fulfil donor and helper roles, and an anti-hero might blur the hero/villain boundary. Identifying these roles helps you decode expectations and character arcs in any moving image or print narrative.
现代媒体文本常融合或颠覆这些类型,但底层功能依然有用。例如,一位导师可同时扮演赠予者和帮手,反英雄可能模糊英雄与反派的界限。识别这些角色有助于你解码任何动态影像或印刷叙事中的预期和人物弧光。
4. Genre Theory (Neale) | 类型理论(尼尔)
Genre = Repetition + Difference
Steve Neale argued that genres are defined by a balance of repetition and difference. Producers rely on familiar conventions (repetition) to attract audiences, but must also offer some variation (difference) to keep texts interesting and economically successful. Without difference, genres become stale and unmarketable.
史蒂夫·尼尔指出,类型由重复与差异的平衡来定义。制作者依赖熟悉的惯例(重复)吸引受众,但也必须提供一些变化(差异)以保持文本有趣并取得经济成功。没有差异,类型会变得陈旧且无市场。
The concept of 'genre fluidity' means that genres evolve over time as conventions shift. You should analyse how a specific text confirms or challenges typical iconography, narrative patterns and character archetypes. Ask whether it is a straightforward replication of genre repertoire or a hybrid that borrows from other genres.
“类型流动性”概念意味着,类型随时间演变,惯例发生转变。你应分析特定文本如何确认或挑战典型的影像符号、叙事模式和人物原型。追问它是简单复制类型清单,还是借用其他类型的混合体。
5. Binary Oppositions (Levi-Strauss) | 二元对立(列维-斯特劳斯)
rative Tension = Binary Opposition (e.g. Good vs Evil, Young vs Old, Nature vs Technology)
Claude Levi-Strauss suggested that narratives are driven by conflict between opposing forces or concepts, known as binary oppositions. Media texts construct meaning through contrasts such as wealth/poverty, hero/villain, masculine/feminine or urban/rural. These oppositions help audiences make sense of the world and reveal the dominant ideology within the text.
克劳德·列维-斯特劳斯提出,叙事由对立力量或概念间的冲突驱动,即二元对立。媒体文本通过诸如财富/贫困、英雄/反派、阳刚/阴柔或城市/乡村等对比建构意义。这些对立帮助受众理解世界,并揭示文本内的主流意识形态。
When analysing a product, identify the key binary pairs at work. Consider which side is privileged and which is marginalised, as this can expose hidden power structures. The resolution of an opposition often reinforces a particular value system, making this a powerful tool for studying representation.
分析产品时,找出发挥作用的关键二元对。思考哪一方被优待、哪一方被边缘化,这能揭露隐蔽的权力结构。对立的解决往往强化特定价值体系,使之成为研究表征的利器。
6. Representation Theory (Hall) | 表征理论(霍尔)
Representation = Reality + Mediation (Selection, Construction, Anchorage)
Stuart Hall emphasised that media representations are not a transparent reflection of reality; they are mediated. Meaning is created through processes of selection, omission, construction and anchorage. A text selects what to show, leaves out other elements, constructs an image through technical codes, and uses captions or context to anchor preferred meanings.
斯图亚特·霍尔强调,媒体表征并非现实的透明反映,而是经过中介的。意义通过选择、省略、建构和锚定等过程创造出来。文本选择呈现什么、舍弃其他元素、通过技术代码建构形象,并利用标题或语境锚定优先意义。
Stereotypes are often used as a shorthand to convey representations quickly, but they reduce groups of people to a few exaggerated traits. You must examine how and why certain social groups are represented, and whether stereotypes are reinforced or challenged. Always consider the potential effect on audience attitudes and identity.
刻板印象常被用作速记手段快速传达表征,却将人群简化为几个被夸大的特征。你必须审视特定社会群体如何被表征、为何如此,以及刻板印象是得到强化还是被挑战。始终考虑对受众态度和身份的潜在影响。
7. Reception Theory (Hall) | 接受理论(霍尔)
Encoding/Decoding → Preferred / Negotiated / Oppositional Reading
Stuart Hall's encoding/decoding model argues that producers encode texts with intended meanings, but audiences decode them in different ways based on their own social and cultural contexts. A preferred reading accepts the dominant message fully; a negotiated reading accepts the overall frame but modifies some elements; an oppositional reading rejects the intended meaning and interprets the text against the grain.
霍尔编码/解码模型认为,制作者将意图意义编码进文本,但受众依据自身社会文化语境以不同方式解码。优先式解读完全接受主导信息;协商式解读接受整体框架但调整某些要素;对抗式解读拒绝意图意义,反其道而释之。
This theory highlights that audiences are not passive -- meaning is a site of struggle between producer and consumer. When writing about a media text, discuss the dominant reading offered and then explore possible alternative readings that different audience segments might produce. This deepens your analysis of ideology and audience engagement.
该理论强调受众并非被动——意义是制作者与消费者之间的角力场。在分析媒体文本时,讨论提供的支配性解读,并探究不同受众群体可能产生的替代性解读。这将加深你对意识形态和受众参与的分析。
8. Male Gaze (Mulvey) | 男性凝视(马尔维)
Visual Pleasure = Active Male Look → Passive Female Object
Laura Mulvey introduced the concept of the male gaze to describe how Hollywood cinema positions the viewer from a masculine, heterosexual perspective. Women on screen are often framed as erotic objects to be looked at, while men are the active bearers of the look. This objectification serves a patriarchal ideology and shapes spectator identification.
劳拉·马尔维引入男性凝视概念,描述好莱坞电影如何从男性异性恋视角将观众定位。银幕上的女性常被框为供观看的情欲对象,而男性则是主动的观看承载者。这种物化为父权意识形态服务,并形塑观众的身份认同。
Apply this theory when studying music videos, advertising or film extracts. Look for camera framing that fragments the female body, slow-motion sequences of female characters, and narrative structures that revolve around male action. Also discuss whether modern texts reinforce or attempt to subvert the gaze through offering a more diverse range of perspectives.
研究音乐视频、广告或电影片段时应用此理论。留意使女性身体碎片化的镜头取景、女性角色的慢动作段落,以及围绕男性行动展开的叙事结构。同时讨论现代文本是强化还是试图通过提供更多元的视角来颠覆凝视。
9. Uses and Gratifications (Blumler & Katz) | 使用与满足(布卢姆勒与卡茨)
ivity = Information + Personal Identity + Integration & Social Interaction + Entertainment
Blumler and Katz's uses and gratifications model assumes that audiences actively choose media to satisfy specific needs. These needs fall into four broad categories: Information (surveillance, learning), Personal Identity (reinforcing values, identifying with characters), Integration and Social Interaction (building conversation topics, parasocial relationships), and Entertainment (escapism, relaxation, enjoyment).
布卢姆勒与卡茨的使用与满足模型假设,受众主动选择媒体以满足特定需求。这些需求分为四大类:信息(监视、学习)、个人身份(强化价值观、与角色认同)、整合与社会互动(建立谈资、准社会关系)以及娱乐(逃避、放松、享受)。
This approach shifts focus from 'what media do to people' to 'what people do with media'. When discussing audiences, consider how a text can offer multiple gratifications to different users simultaneously. For example, a news app may provide information and social currency, while a sitcom can give entertainment and a sense of belonging.
该方法将焦点从“媒体对人做了什么”转向“人用媒体做什么”。讨论受众时,考虑一个文本如何能同时为不同使用者提供多重满足。例如,新闻应用可提供信息和社会谈资,而情景喜剧能提供娱乐和归属感。
10. Hypodermic Needle Model | 皮下注射模式
Media Effect = Powerful Message → Passive Receiver
The hypodermic needle model (or magic bullet theory) is an early mass communication concept suggesting that media messages are directly injected into the passive minds of an audience, producing uniform and immediate effects. It assumes no individual differences and positions audiences as helpless recipients of propaganda or harmful content.
皮下注射模式(或称魔弹论)是早期大众传播概念,认为媒体信息被直接注入受众被动的大脑,产生统一而即时的影响。它假设没有个体差异,将受众定位为宣传或有害内容无助的接受者。
While largely discredited due to its simplistic view, this model appears in moral panics about media effects, such as those linking video games to violence. It serves as a useful contrast to active audience theories, showing how theoretical perspectives on power and influence have evolved in media studies.
尽管因观点过于简单而基本被否定,该模型仍出现在关于媒体影响的道德恐慌中,例如将电子游戏与暴力挂钩。它与主动受众理论形成有益对比,展示出媒体研究中有关权力与影响的理论视角如何演变。
11. Two-Step Flow Theory (Lazarsfeld & Katz) | 两极流动理论(拉扎斯菲尔德与卡茨)
Media Influence = Media → Opinion Leaders → Audience
The two-step flow model refines the hypodermic notion by arguing that media messages do not reach the masses directly. Instead, they first reach opinion leaders -- individuals who interpret, filter and diffuse information within their social networks. These opinion leaders then influence the wider audience, making the flow a two-step process.
