📚 Year 11 SQA History: Case Study Practice | Year 11 SQA
Case study questions sit at the centre of SQA National 5 History. They ask you to analyse historical events through a small set of sources, to build arguments that are supported rather than merely asserted, and to show that you understand cause, consequence, change and continuity. This guide sets out a practical method, a worked example drawn from Red Clydeside, and a full model answer with examiner commentary.
1. Understanding the Case Study Approach |
In the SQA History paper a case study typically presents you with two or three sources - these could be primary or secondary accounts, political cartoons, or statistics - together with a specific question such as 'Explain the reasons for...' or 'How useful is Source A as evidence of...?' Your task is to integrate your own historical knowledge with evidence drawn from the sources to produce a coherent, analytical response.
A case study is not a comprehension test. Copying out a source earns nothing on its own. Marks come from what you do with the material: interpreting it, testing it against your own knowledge, and using it to build a line of argument. Treat the source as a witness who must be cross-examined, not as a verdict that must be repeated.
Cause, consequence, change and continuity sit beneath almost every case study, whatever the topic. The Treaty of Union, Red Clydeside, the rise of Hitler and the Cuban Missile Crisis are all asked about in the same underlying way: why did this happen, what followed, and how far did anything really alter?
2. What SQA Markers Actually Reward |
SQA marking is positive. You gain marks for valid, developed points and lose nothing for attempting a judgement that turns out to be imperfect. But development is everything. A bare assertion such as 'rents went up' earns very little; the same point with specific detail and an explanatory link earns full credit.
Every answer needs two ingredients working together: knowledge and understanding (KU), which means accurate and specific facts, and analysis, which means explaining how those facts answer the question that was actually asked. Facts without explanation sit on the page doing nothing.
| Command word | What it demands |
| Explain the reasons | Causal links, long and short term |
| How useful is Source X | Content + origin/purpose + own knowledge | 来源X有多大用处 | 内容 + 来源与目的 + 自身知识 |
| To what extent / How far | Balanced evidence and a clear judgement |
| Describe | Detailed KU only, no judgement needed |
| How important was | Ranked factors plus a supported verdict | ……
5 marks = 3 × source content + 1 × origin and purpose + 1 × recall (own knowledge)
Learning that shape by heart turns a vague question into a checklist you can execute calmly, even when the topic is unfamiliar.
