📚 Quick-Reference Handbook: Philosophy Formulas and Theorems for Edexcel Year 11 | Edexcel Year 11 哲学:公式定理速查手册
This handbook condenses the core philosophical arguments, critiques and key concepts from the Edexcel Year 11 Philosophy specification into formula-like statements, logical schemas and decision matrices. Use it to recall premise-conclusion structures, essential objections and philosophical terminology quickly, especially in the final weeks before the exam.
Each section follows the same pattern: a formal schema, a plain-English explanation, and the standard criticisms you are expected to reproduce in a 12-mark answer. Learn the schemas as structures, not as sentences to memorise word for word.
1. Logical Foundations: Validity and Soundness |
Every argument in the course, including every argument for God's existence, can be written as a set of premises plus a conclusion. Before you write any formula you need two technical terms. An argument is valid when it is impossible for the premises to be true and the conclusion false at the same time. An argument is sound when it is valid and every premise is actually true.
VALID = ¬(Premises true ∧ Conclusion false)
SOUND = VALID ∧ all premises true
Validity is about structure alone; soundness adds contact with reality. This is why a critic can accept that an argument is valid yet still reject the conclusion: they simply deny one of the premises.
The two forms you must recognise instantly are modus ponens and modus tollens. Both are valid; their mirror images are not.
Modus ponens: P ⇒ Q, P ∴ Q
Modus tollens: P ⇒ Q, ¬Q ∴ ¬P
Affirming the consequent (P ⇒ Q, Q ∴ P) is invalid. Example: 'If God exists, the universe is ordered; the universe is ordered; so God exists.'
Denying the antecedent (P ⇒ Q, ¬P ∴ ¬Q) is also invalid. Example: 'If it is a miracle, science cannot explain it; science can explain it; so it is not a miracle.'
Circular reasoning assumes the conclusion inside a premise, which is the standard objection to some versions of the ontological argument.
2. The Teleological Argument Formula |
The design argument can be expressed as: if the universe exhibits complex, ordered patterns that serve a purpose, the best explanation is an intelligent designer. Paley's watch analogy supports this inference: a watch implies a watchmaker, so the universe implies a universe-maker.
(C ∧ P) ⇒ D
C = complexity (intricate order), P = purposeful arrangement (e.g. the human eye, the nitrogen cycle), D = designer (God).
C = 复杂性(精细的秩序),P = 目的性安排(如人眼、氮循环),D = 设计者(上帝)。
Paley's full analogy has three steps. First, a watch found on a heath shows evidence of contrivance. Second, the inference to a watchmaker does not depend on how often you have seen watches made. Third, if the watch were able to reproduce itself, this would increase rather than weaken the case for design.
Modern versions replace the watch with biological fine-tuning: the strength of gravity, the cosmological constant and the ratio of carbon to oxygen in stars all fall within narrow life-permitting ranges.
Notice the logical form: the argument is an inference to the best explanation, not a deductive proof. That single fact shapes every criticism below.
3. Hume's Criticisms of the Design Argument |
Hume's criticisms: the analogy between a watch and the universe is weak (disanalogy); we have no other universes to compare; the designer may not be the God of classical theism - perhaps a team, a finite being or even an apprentice; furthermore, apparent design could emerge from a blind process of trial and error over vast time (limited cause).
The disanalogy objection works because a watch is a small, human-made, replaceable object inside a universe we already know, while the universe is unique, vast and not observed to be manufactured.
The limited cause objection cuts deeper than it first appears: from a finite effect you may only infer a finite cause, so the argument at best yields a very powerful but not infinite designer.
Multiple designers: shipbuilding, house-building and watch-making are all collaborative, so the analogy supports a team of gods rather than one.
Evil and disorder: the presence of suffering, disease and inefficient design (the human spine, the blind spot in the retina) weakens the claim of perfect contrivance.
Darwinian alternative: natural selection explains apparent design without a designer, so the premise C ∧ P no longer forces the conclusion D.
4. The Cosmological Argument Formula |
Aquinas' First Cause argument: everything in motion is moved by something else; an infinite regress of movers is impossible; therefore there must be a first unmoved mover, which is God. A general formula can be written:
∀x (M(x) ⇒ ∃y (C(y, x) ∧ y ≠ x)) ∧ ¬INF(C) ∴ ∃F (¬∃y C(y, F) ∧ F = God)
Here M = is moved or is contingent, C(y, x) = y causes x, and INF(C) = an infinite chain of causes.
Aquinas offers five ways in total; the first (motion), the second (efficient cause) and the third (possibility and necessity) are the ones examined at Year 11. The third way is the strongest: everything contingent could fail to exist, so if everything were contingent there would have been a time with nothing, and nothing could then have begun to exist - hence a necessary being.
Leibniz restates the same structure as the Principle of Sufficient Reason: nothing happens without a reason, so the universe itself requires a reason outside itself.
5. Criticisms of the Cosmological Argument |
Hume denies that we ever observe a necessary connection between cause and effect; we observe constant conjunction only. If we cannot see causal power in a billiard-ball collision, we certainly cannot claim that the universe must have a cause.
Russell adds the fallacy of composition: every human has a mother, but it does not follow that the whole human race has a mother. Likewise, every event having a cause does not mean the totality of events has one.
Infinite regress may be acceptable: an actually infinite chain of causes is logically possible, so premise ¬INF(C) is not obviously true.
The first cause need not be God: it could be an abstract principle, an impersonal force, or a being that ceased to exist after causing the universe.
Quantum physics: at the subatomic level some events appear genuinely uncaused, undermining the universal causal principle.
In the exam, always state whether a criticism attacks the premises or the inference. That move alone usually secures the higher band.
6. The Ontological Argument Formula |
Anselm defines God as 'that than which nothing greater can be conceived'. The argument is a priori: it uses only the concept of God, not observation of the world.
God exists in the understanding ⇒ God must exist in reality (else something greater could be conceived)
∴ God exists
Gaunilo's island parody replies that the same form would prove a perfect island exists, which is absurd. Anselm answers that only God is a being of maximal greatness, so the parody fails on relevance.
Kant's objection is the decisive one at GCSE: existence is not a predicate. Adding 'exists' to a concept adds nothing to its content - a hundred real pounds contain no more conceptual content than a hundred possible pounds.
Descartes' version: existence is a perfection, God has all perfections, so God exists - as a triangle necessarily has angles summing to 180°.
Counter: necessary existence applies to mathematical objects only if you assume God is that kind of object, which begs the question.
7. The Problem of Evil and Theodicy |
The inconsistent triad states that the following three propositions cannot all be true: God is omnipotent, God is omnibenevolent, and evil exists.
{Omnipotent ∧ Omnibenevolent ∧ ∃Evil} ⇒ Contradiction
∴ ¬(Omnipotent) ∨ ¬(Omnibenevolent) ∨ ¬∃Evil
The Augustinian theodicy argues that evil is a privatio boni - a privation of good, not a substance created by God. Evil entered through the free choice of angels and humans, and natural evil follows from a fallen order. Its weaknesses are that a perfect God could not create a flawed world, and that evolutionary biology places suffering long before any human free choice.
The Irenaean theodicy argues that God made an immature world in which suffering is a necessary instrument of soul-making, moving people towards genuine virtue. Hick develops this into a 'vale of soul-making'.
Criticism: some suffering, such as the death of a child, appears grossly disproportionate to any soul-making benefit.
Criticism: heaven may or may not compensate; the argument depends on an unproven afterlife.
Free will defence: a world with genuine moral choice must allow the possibility of evil.
8. Religious Experience and Miracles |
Religious experiences are usually classified by type: numinous (a sense of awe before the wholly other), conversion (a life-transforming encounter), and mystical (union or union-like awareness). Their evidential structure is inductive, not deductive.
E = Experience, B = Belief ⇒ E (partially) confirms B, not E proves B
James offers four marks of mystical experience: ineffability, noetic quality, transience and passivity. Swinburne's principle of credulity states that, in the absence of counter-evidence, it is reasonable to believe things are as they seem - including religious experiences.
Hume's critique of miracles is a probability calculation: a miracle is by definition a violation of the laws of nature, and the laws of nature rest on uniform testimony, so no testimony can ever outweigh it.
Reply: Hume begs the question by assuming at the outset that miracles cannot occur.
