1. Course Overview |
The Year 11 Edexcel Physics course is the second and final year of a two-year programme. It builds directly on the foundations laid in Year 10, where you met the basic ideas of forces, energy transfer, wave behaviour and simple series and parallel circuits. In Year 11 the same ideas return at a higher level: equations become quantitative, graphs become more demanding, and questions increasingly ask you to apply familiar physics to unfamiliar contexts.
Two specifications are usually meant by 'Edexcel Physics' at this level: Pearson Edexcel GCSE Physics (1PH0) and Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Physics (4PH1). Both are graded on the 9-1 scale, both are assessed by examination only, and both share almost the same topic list. The main differences are the paper timings, the tiering arrangements and the wording of the mark schemes, so always confirm which specification your school actually enters you for.
Assessment is by two written papers, each lasting 1 hour and 45 minutes on the GCSE specification, with a comparable overall time allocation on the International GCSE. The papers cover both core and advanced topics, with a strong emphasis on applying knowledge to unfamiliar contexts, on mathematical skills and on practical investigations. The final grade is based on these exams alone: there is no coursework, but practical skills are tested through questions built around experimental scenarios.
2. Assessment Structure and Papers |
Understanding the shape of the exam is as important as understanding the physics. Both papers carry equal weight, both contain a mixture of multiple-choice, short structured and extended writing questions, and both include calculation questions that require you to recall or select an equation, substitute values and give the answer with the correct unit and significant figures.
| Paper | Content focus | Length | Weighting |
| Paper 1 | Forces, energy, waves and the related key concepts | 1 h 45 min | 50% |
| Paper 2 | Electricity, magnetism, radioactivity, particle model and forces on matter | 1 h 45 min | 50% |
On the GCSE route you may be entered for Foundation tier, where grades 1 to 5 are available, or Higher tier, where grades 4 to 9 are available. The content is the same, but Higher tier papers contain more multi-step calculations and more questions that require you to link two topics together in one answer.
. This is a common trap: candidates waste revision time memorising given equations and then lose marks on equations they must recall, such as v = f × λ or V = I × R.
3. Forces and Motion |
Forces and motion is the largest single topic in the specification and the one that carries the most calculations. You need to separate scalars, which have magnitude only, from vectors, which have both magnitude and direction. Speed, distance, mass and energy are scalars; velocity, acceleration, force, momentum and weight are vectors, and direction errors in an answer are a very common source of lost marks.
The core relationships are simple but must be used precisely. Average speed is distance divided by time, and acceleration is the change in velocity divided by the time taken:
v = s ÷ t a = Δv ÷ t
On a distance-time graph the gradient gives speed, and a horizontal line means the object is stationary. On a velocity-time graph the gradient gives acceleration and the area under the line gives the distance travelled, so a question that looks like graph reading is often a calculation in disguise.
Newton's laws organise everything else. A resultant force changes velocity; force equals mass times acceleration; and for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction acting on a different object. Mass is the amount of matter in kilograms, while weight is a force in newtons and depends on gravitational field strength:
F = m × a W = m × g (g ≈ 9.8 N/kg on Earth)
Stopping distance is thinking distance plus braking distance, and both parts change with speed, reaction time, road conditions, tyre and brake condition, and mass. Terminal velocity occurs when the upward drag force equals the downward weight, so the resultant force is zero and acceleration is zero even though the object is still moving.
Momentum, moments and pressure complete the topic. Momentum is conserved in collisions and explosions; the moment of a force is force times perpendicular distance; pressure is force divided by area; and pressure in a liquid increases with depth and density. Hooke's law applies to a spring up to its limit of proportionality.
p = m × v
