1. Cell Structure and Function |
All living organisms are composed of cells. Eukaryotic cells, such as those of animals, plants and fungi, contain a distinct nucleus enclosed by a membrane, along with membrane-bound organelles. In contrast, prokaryotic cells (bacteria) lack a true nucleus and have circular DNA free in the cytoplasm.
Animal cells possess a nucleus that controls the cell's activities, cytoplasm where most chemical reactions occur, a cell membrane that controls the movement of substances, mitochondria for aerobic respiration, and ribosomes for protein synthesis. Plant cells additionally have a rigid cellulose cell wall, a large permanent vacuole containing cell sap, and chloroplasts that capture light energy for photosynthesis.
2. Movement Across Cell Membranes |
Substances move into and out of cells through the cell membrane by diffusion, osmosis and active transport. Diffusion is the net movement of particles from a region of higher concentration to a region of lower concentration, down a concentration gradient, and does not require energy.
Osmosis is the diffusion of water molecules from a dilute solution to a more concentrated solution through a partially permeable membrane. Active transport, on the other hand, moves substances against the concentration gradient, from low to high concentration, using energy from ATP. This process is vital for mineral ion uptake in root hair cells.
3. Biological Molecules |
Carbohydrates, proteins and lipids are the main biological molecules tested in food samples. Starch and sugars are carbohydrates. Glucose is a simple sugar used in respiration. Proteins are made of amino acids and are essential for growth and repair. Lipids provide insulation and a long-term energy store.
Food tests help identify these molecules: iodine solution turns blue-black in the presence of starch; Benedict's solution (heated with the sample) turns brick-red for reducing sugars; Biuret reagent turns purple for proteins; and the ethanol emulsion test produces a cloudy white layer for lipids.
4. Enzymes | 酶
Enzymes are biological catalysts that speed up metabolic reactions without being used up. They are proteins with a specific active site complementary to their substrate, fitting the lock-and-key model. Each enzyme works best at its optimum pH and temperature.
High temperatures or extreme pH values can denature the enzyme, changing the shape of the active site so the substrate can no longer bind. In the human digestive system, amylase breaks down starch into maltose, protease digests proteins into amino acids, and lipase converts lipids into fatty acids and glycerol.
5. Nutrition and Digestion |
A balanced diet provides carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, vitamins, minerals, water and dietary fibre. The digestive system breaks down large, insoluble food molecules into small, soluble ones that can be absorbed into the blood. Mechanical digestion, such as chewing, increases the surface area for enzyme action.
The alimentary canal includes the mouth, oesophagus, stomach, small intestine and large intestine. In the stomach, hydrochloric acid kills bacteria and provides the optimum pH for protease. The small intestine is the main site for digestion and absorption; its inner lining has villi that increase the surface area to maximise nutrient uptake into the blood.
6. The Respiratory System and Gas Exchange |
The respiratory system supplies oxygen for aerobic respiration and removes carbon dioxide. Air enters through the nose and mouth, passes down the trachea, bronchi and bronchioles, and finally reaches the alveoli – tiny air sacs surrounded by capillaries where gas exchange occurs.
Oxygen diffuses from the alveoli into the blood, while carbon dioxide diffuses from the blood into the alveoli to be exhaled. The alveoli have thin, moist walls and a large surface area, which makes diffusion efficient. Breathing movements – inhalation and exhalation – are controlled by the diaphragm and intercostal muscles.
7. The Circulatory System |
The human circulatory system consists of the heart, blood vessels and blood. The heart is a double pump: the right side pumps deoxygenated blood to the lungs, while the left side pumps oxygenated blood to the rest of the body. Valves prevent backflow of blood.
Arteries carry blood away from the heart under high pressure; they have thick, muscular walls. Veins return blood to the heart at lower pressure and contain valves. Capillaries are tiny, thin-walled vessels that allow exchange of substances with tissues. Blood contains red blood cells (carry oxygen via haemoglobin), white blood cells (defence) and platelets (clotting).
8. Excretion and Homeostasis |
Excretion is the removal of metabolic waste products, such as carbon dioxide from the lungs and urea from the kidneys. Homeostasis is the maintenance of a constant internal environment, including regulating body temperature and blood glucose levels.
The kidneys filter blood, reabsorb useful substances like glucose and some water, and produce urine containing urea and excess water. The hormone insulin, produced by the pancreas, lowers blood glucose by converting glucose into glycogen stored in the liver. The skin also contributes to homeostasis by sweating to cool the body and by vasodilation or vasoconstriction of blood vessels.
9. Plant Transport Systems |
Plants have two transport tissues: xylem and phloem. Xylem vessels are made of dead cells arranged end to end to form continuous tubes; they transport water and dissolved mineral ions from the roots to the leaves. The movement of water through the xylem is called the transpiration stream and is driven by evaporation from the leaves.
Phloem tissue consists of living sieve tube elements and companion cells. It transports sucrose and amino acids from sources (e.g. leaves) to sinks (e.g. roots and growing tips) in a process called translocation. The rate of transpiration is affected by light intensity, temperature, humidity and wind speed.
10. Photosynthesis |
xygen. Chlorophyll inside chloroplasts absorbs light energy. The overall word equation is: carbon dioxide + water → glucose + oxygen, with light energy and chlorophyll required.
6CO₂ + 6H₂O → C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂
The rate of photosynthesis can be limited by light intensity, carbon dioxide concentration and temperature. Glucose produced is used in respiration, converted into starch for storage, or used to build cellulose for cell walls and proteins for growth.
