1. Elements of Art |
Line is a mark with length and direction, which can be straight, curved, thick, thin, gestural or contour. Every artwork begins with line.
Shape is a two-dimensional enclosed area. Shapes are geometric (squares, circles) or organic (irregular, freeform).
Form refers to objects with three dimensions – height, width and depth. In 2D art we create the illusion of form through shading and perspective.
Texture is the surface quality, either actual (tactile) or implied (visual). Terms include rough, smooth, shiny, gritty, and soft.
Space is the area around, between or within objects. Positive space is the subject; negative space is the background void.
Value (tone) describes lightness or darkness. A full value range from white to black creates depth and volume.
2. Principles of Design |
Balance is the distribution of visual weight. Symmetrical balance mirrors elements; asymmetrical balance uses unequal but visually stable arrangements.
Contrast juxtaposes opposing elements – light/dark, rough/smooth, large/small – to create interest and focal points.
Emphasis draws the viewer's eye to a dominant area or focal point, often achieved through contrast, isolation or convergence.
Rhythm/Pattern is created by repeating elements such as lines, shapes or colours. It can be regular, flowing or progressive.
Unity/Harmony occurs when all parts of an artwork feel cohesive. A limited colour palette or consistent brushstrokes often fosters unity.
Proportion relates to the size relationship between parts of an artwork. The human body canon and golden ratio are classic proportion systems.
3. Colour Theory |
Primary colours (red, yellow, blue) cannot be mixed from other colours. In painting, all other hues derive from them.
Secondary colours (orange, green, violet) are made by mixing two primaries.
Tertiary colours (e.g. red-orange, blue-green) result from mixing a primary with an adjacent secondary.
Harmonious colours sit next to each other on the colour wheel (analogous). They create calm, unified schemes.
Complementary colours are opposite on the wheel (e.g. red and green). They produce high contrast and vibrant tension.
Hue, saturation and brightness define a colour precisely: hue is the pure spectrum name, saturation is colour intensity, brightness is how light or dark it appears.
4. Drawing and Mark-making |
Contour drawing focuses on the outline and internal edges of a subject without lifting the pencil, training observation.
Gesture drawing captures movement and posture rapidly, often in 30–120 seconds. It emphasises energy over detail.
Hatching and cross-hatching are shading methods using closely spaced parallel lines or intersecting sets. Density controls tone.
Stippling uses tiny dots to build value; denser dots create darker areas. Pen and ink work often uses this technique.
Blending smooths tones, often with a blending stump or finger, to create soft transitions and realistic textures.
5. Painting Techniques |
Wash is diluted paint (watercolour or ink) spread evenly over a surface, creating a transparent, luminous layer.
Glaze in oil or acrylic is a thin, transparent layer applied over dry paint to modify colour without obscuring underlayers.
Impasto is thickly applied paint that retains brush or palette knife marks, adding bold texture and dimension.
Dry brush uses a minimally loaded brush on a dry surface, producing a scratchy, broken texture useful for fur or wood grain.
Underpainting is a monochrome base layer that establishes values before glazing colours, common in traditional oil painting.
Relief sculpture projects from a flat background. Low relief (bas-relief) is shallow; high relief stands out dramatically.

Rule of thirds nto a 3×3 grid; placing key elements along lines or intersections creates dynamic balance.
Foreground, middle ground and background divide pictorial depth. Overlapping objects and size variation enhance depth.
Linear perspective uses converging lines to a vanishing point on the horizon, giving the illusion of space on a flat surface.
Aerial/atmospheric perspective mimics distance by fading colours, blurring details and reducing contrast in far-off objects.
