1. Atomic Structure & Periodic Table |
Atoms consist of a central nucleus containing protons and neutrons, with electrons arranged in energy levels (shells) around the nucleus. The atomic number (Z) equals the number of protons, and the mass number (A) is the sum of protons and neutrons. In a neutral atom, the number of electrons equals the number of protons. Isotopes are atoms of the same element with different numbers of neutrons but the same number of protons.
- Relative atomic mass (Aᵣ) = sum of (isotope mass × % abundance) / 100
The Periodic Table arranges elements in order of increasing atomic number. Periods are horizontal rows; groups are vertical columns. Elements in the same group have the same number of outer-shell electrons and similar chemical properties.
2. Chemical Bonding & Structure |
Ionic bonding occurs between metals and non-metals, involving the transfer of electrons to form oppositely charged ions. The electrostatic attraction between positive and negative ions forms a giant ionic lattice. Covalent bonding involves the sharing of electron pairs between non-metal atoms, resulting in simple molecules or giant covalent structures (like diamond, graphite, and SiO₂). Metallic bonding is the attraction between positive metal ions and a sea of delocalised electrons.
Properties summary: Ionic compounds have high melting points, conduct electricity when molten or in solution. Simple molecular substances have low melting points and do not conduct electricity. Giant covalent structures have very high melting points (diamond does not conduct; graphite conducts due to delocalised electrons). Metals are malleable, ductile, and good conductors.
3. Chemical Formulae & Equations |
ripts. For example, magnesium chloride: Mg²⁺ and Cl⁻ → MgCl₂. Balancing equations ensures that the number of atoms of each element is the same on both sides. State symbols: (s), (l), (g), (aq).
Empirical formula is the simplest whole number ratio of atoms. Molecular formula shows the actual number of atoms. For example, glucose: molecular formula C₆H₁₂O₆, empirical formula CH₂O. The empirical formula can be calculated from mass or percentage composition.
4. The Mole Concept & Calculations |
nt). The mass of one mole of a substance is its molar mass (M) in g/mol, numerically equal to the relative formula mass (Mᵣ).
n = m / M (amount = mass / molar mass)
n = m / M(物质的量 = 质量 / 摩尔质量)
mount (n) / volume (V). Units: mol/dm³ when volume is in dm³. Converting cm³ to dm³: divide by 1000.
c = n / V
Percentage yield: (actual yield / theoretical yield) × 100%. Atom economy: (Mᵣ of desired product / sum of Mᵣ of all reactants) × 100%.
5. Acids, Bases & Salts |
An acid is a substance that produces hydrogen ions (H⁺) in aqueous solution. A base is a substance that neutralises an acid to form a salt and water. An alkali is a soluble base that produces hydroxide ions (OH⁻) in water. The strength of an acid depends on the degree of ionisation; pH measures the concentration of H⁺ ions. pH less than 7 is acidic, pH 7 is neutral, pH greater than 7 is alkaline.
₂O(l). Reactions with carbonates produce salt + water + CO₂. Making soluble salts: acid + metal, acid + insoluble base, acid + carbonate, or by titration for alkali + acid.
Common acids: HCl (hydrochloric), H₂SO₄ (sulfuric), HNO₃ (nitric). Salts formed: chlorides, sulfates, nitrates. Precipitation reactions occur when two solutions produce an insoluble solid.
6. Electrolysis | 电解
Electrolysis is the decomposition of an ionic compound using direct electric current. The electrolyte is the molten or dissolved ionic substance. During electrolysis, cations move to the cathode (negative electrode) where reduction occurs, and anions move to the anode (positive electrode) where oxidation occurs. The mnemonic is 'OIL RIG': Oxidation Is Loss of electrons, Reduction Is Gain of electrons.
In aqueous solutions, the products depend on the relative reactivity and concentration of ions. At the cathode, hydrogen is produced if the metal is more reactive than hydrogen; otherwise the metal is deposited. At the anode, halides often form halogen gases; if no halide, oxygen is produced from water. Half-equations show electron transfer.
7. Energy Changes in Reactions |
ure decrease. Bond breaking requires energy (endothermic), bond making releases energy (exothermic). The overall energy change ΔH = total energy absorbed for bond breaking – total energy released for bond making.
Activation energy is the minimum energy required for a reaction to occur. Reaction profile diagrams show the energy change during a reaction; the peak represents the transition state. Catalysts lower the activation energy by providing an alternative reaction pathway.
ΔH = Σ(bond energies of reactants) – Σ(bond energies of products)
8. Rates of Reaction |
The rate of a reaction can be measured by the change in mass, volume of gas produced, or colour change per unit time. Factors affecting rate: concentration of reactants (in solution), pressure of gases, surface area of solids, temperature, and the presence of a catalyst. Increasing temperature increases the rate because particles have more kinetic energy and a greater proportion of collisions exceed the activation energy.
y) and correct orientation. A catalyst increases the rate without being used up by providing an alternative pathway with lower activation energy. Enzymes are biological catalysts.
9. Organic Chemistry – Hydrocarbons |
e (CH₄), ethane (C₂H₆), propane (C₃H₈), butane (C₄H₁₀). They are used as fuels. Alkenes are unsaturated hydrocarbons with at least one C=C double bond; general formula CₙH₂ₙ. Ethene (C₂H₄) and propene (C₃H₆) are examples. Alkenes decolourise bromine water, while alkanes do not – this is a test for unsaturation.
Complete combustion of hydrocarbons produces CO₂ and H₂O. Incomplete combustion can produce CO and C (soot). Isomers are compounds with the same molecular formula but different structural arrangements. The first structural isomer occurs at C₄H₁₀ (butane and methylpropane).
10. Quantitative Chemistry & Titrations |
. An indicator (e.g., phenolphthalein) is used to detect the endpoint. The titre volume is recorded, and concordant results are used to calculate concentration using the equation c₁V₁/n₁ = c₂V₂/n₂, where n is the stoichiometric coefficient.
/mol). n = V (dm³) / 24, or n = V (cm³) / 24,000. This is valid at 20 °C and 1 atmosphere.
n = V(dm³) / 24,或 n = V(cm³) / 24,000。适用于 20 °C、1 atm。
11. Redox & Reactivity Series |
Reduction involves gain of electrons; oxidation involves loss of electrons. A redox reaction is one where both occur. The reactivity series orders metals by their tendency to lose electrons. A more reactive metal will displace a less reactive metal from its compound. The mnemonic: Potassium, Sodium, Calcium, Magnesium, Aluminium, (Carbon), Zinc, Iron, (Hydrogen), Copper, Silver, Gold. Carbon can reduce zinc oxide and iron oxide below it in the series.
acted in a blast furnace: Fe₂O₃ + 3CO → 2Fe + 3CO₂. Aluminium extraction uses electrolysis of molten Al₂O₃ dissolved in cryolite to lower the melting point.
12. The Atmosphere & Environmental Chemistry |
The Earth's early atmosphere was mainly carbon dioxide with little oxygen. Photosynthesis by plants and dissolution of CO₂ in oceans reduced CO₂ levels. Today's atmosphere is about 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, 0.04% CO₂, and noble gases. Combustion of fossil fuels releases CO₂, SO₂ (sulfur dioxide), and NOₓ, leading to acid rain, global warming, and health issues. Catalytic converters in cars reduce emissions of CO and NOₓ.
Greenhouse gases (CO₂, methane, water vapour) trap heat in the atmosphere, causing global warming. Reduction of carbon footprint can be achieved through renewable energy, improved efficiency, and reforestation.
