1. Understanding the Exam Format |
The CAIE IGCSE History exam for Core Content consists of two papers. Paper 1 requires you to answer three structured questions, each worth 25 marks, testing your knowledge and explanation of key events. Paper 2 is a document paper where you analyse historical sources for reliability, usefulness, and message. Knowing exactly what each part demands is the first step to success.
CAIE IGCSE
A very common mistake is poor time management: students spend too long perfecting one question and then rush the others. In Paper 1, allocate no more than 30 minutes per question. In Paper 2, spend roughly 20 minutes per source question. Always leave time to read your answers and check for factual errors.
2. High-Frequency Topic: The Treaty of Versailles (Terms and Impact) |
The Treaty of Versailles (1919) appears in almost every exam series. Key provisions include the War Guilt Clause (Article 231) which forced Germany to accept full blame for the war; reparations set at £6.6 billion; territorial losses such as Alsace-Lorraine to France, the Polish Corridor and Danzig; demilitarisation of the Rhineland; and severe military restrictions (army limited to 100,000 men, no tanks or air force). These terms were designed to weaken Germany permanently and prevent future aggression.
Students frequently misinterpret the treaty's impact. It did bring temporary peace, but the harsh terms created deep resentment in Germany. The 'diktat' narrative was exploited by extremists, contributing to the rise of Hitler. However, in the 1920s, attempts at reconciliation (the Locarno Treaties, Dawes Plan) encouraged some stability. Make sure you can explain both the short-term and long-term consequences, not just list the terms.
3. Common Mistake: Confusing the Aims of the Big Three | 易错点:混淆三巨头的目标
The Paris Peace Conference was dominated by the 'Big Three': France's Georges Clemenceau, Britain's David Lloyd George, and US President Woodrow Wilson. A typical blunder is to attribute the same motives to all three or to mix up their priorities. Clemenceau wanted revenge and security above all—his priority was to cripple Germany so it could never threaten France again. Lloyd George sought a middle way: public opinion in Britain demanded harsh punishment, but he also needed Germany to recover as a trading partner and a bulwark against communism. Wilson was an idealist who championed his Fourteen Points, emphasising self-determination and the creation of a League of Nations.
Students often write anachronisms such as 'Clemenceau wanted to set up the League' or 'Wilson demanded crippling reparations' Wilson = Fair Peace. This will help you frame accurate exam answers and avoid lost marks.
4. High-Frequency Topic: League of Nations – Successes and Failures |
The League of Nations is a staple question, often phrased as 'How successful was the League in the 1920s?' or 'Why did the League fail in the 1930s?'. In the 1920s, the League achieved some successes: it resolved the Aaland Islands dispute (1921), helped avert war between Greece and Bulgaria (1925), and carried out humanitarian work through its agencies. However, it failed to enforce major disarmament and could not stop the Vilna incident (1920) or the Corfu crisis (1923), where bigger powers acted outside its authority.
The 1930s saw catastrophic failures. The Manchurian Crisis (1931-33) and the Abyssinian Crisis (1935-36) exposed the League's impotence. Students often mistakenly think the League had its own army or that the USA was a member, when in reality the USA refused to join. Always highlight structural weaknesses: absence of major powers (USA, USSR until 1934), requirement for unanimous decisions, and lack of enforcement power. Use these points to explain, not just to describe, collapse.
5. Common Mistake: Evaluating Source Reliability Superficially |
In Paper 2, many students lose marks by giving generic statements such as 'This source is unreliable because it is biased' without analysing the nature of the bias. The examiner expects you to apply specific criteria: provenance (who wrote it, when, where, why), the purpose of the source, the intended audience, and cross-referencing with your own knowledge. Simply calling a cartoon 'biased' will not earn full marks; you must explain what the cartoonist wanted to convey and whether the message is supported by facts.
Use the mnemonic PASTE: Purpose, Author, Source type, Tone/Time, and Evaluate against knowledge. A 1938 British cartoon mocking appeasement has a particular purpose and may be useful for showing contemporary attitudes, but it cannot be used as a reliable record of all events. Always discuss usefulness and limitations in tandem, and never treat a source as completely trustworthy or completely useless.
6. High-Frequency Topic: Causes of World War II |
The causes of World War II are examined from multiple angles, often focusing on Hitler's foreign policy, the policy of appeasement, and the failure of the League. Key steps include: German rearmament (1935), remilitarisation of the Rhineland (1936), Anschluss with Austria (1938), the Munich Agreement and Sudetenland crisis (1938), occupation of the rest of Czechoslovakia (March 1939), and the Nazi-Soviet Pact (August 1939). Students must be able to explain how each event increased tension and made war more likely.
A classic exam mistake is to list events chronologically without linking them to causes. For example, simply writing 'Hitler remilitarised the Rhineland' scores poorly unless you add that this violated Versailles and emboldened Hitler further, while the League's lack of response convinced him that the Western powers would not act. Similarly, link appeasement to the idea of 'giving in to avoid war' but also analyse how it may have encouraged aggression.
7. Common Mistake: Narrating Instead of Explaining |
Many questions use the command word 'explain' or 'why', yet large numbers of students fall into the trap of describing what happened rather than analysing reasons. When asked 'Why did the League of Nations fail to stop the Abyssinian Crisis?', do not just recount the events of 1935–36. Instead, structure your answer around causes: the Hoare-Laval Pact undermined collective security, Britain and France were reluctant to act due to fear of pushing Mussolini towards Hitler, and economic sanctions did not include oil, which could have crippled Italy.
To avoid this, practise turning every event into a 'because' statement. For the Cuban Missile Crisis, don't simply state 'the USSR placed missiles in Cuba'; explain that Khrushchev did so because of the perceived missile gap, the US deployment of Jupiter missiles in Turkey, and the desire to protect Castro's revolution after the Bay of Pigs. Start every paragraph with a clear analytical point, not a narrative sentence.
8. High-Frequency Topic: Origins of the Cold War |
The development of the Cold War from wartime alliance to hostile blocs is a favourite topic. Key early events include the Yalta and Potsdam conferences (1945), where tensions surfaced over Poland and the treatment of Germany. The dropping of the atomic bomb, the 'Iron Curtain' speech, the Truman Doctrine (1947) and the Marshall Plan escalated rivalry. The Berlin Blockade and Airlift (1948–49) marked the first direct confrontation, leading to the formation of NATO (1949) and later the Warsaw Pact (1955).
A high-frequency error is to treat Soviet expansionism and US containment as inevitable and one-sided. Students often forget that Stalin's desire for a buffer zone was partly a reaction to previous invasions, and that the US's fear of domino theory was genuine. In answers, you must show the action–reaction cycle: the Soviet takeover of Eastern Europe prompted the Truman Doctrine, which prompted the Berlin Blockade, etc. Demonstrate analysis of both sides' motives to reach higher bands.
9. Common Mistake: Chronology and Timing Errors |
Mixing up the order of events is a serious error that undermines any explanation. Common slip-ups include placing the Berlin Blockade (1948-49) after the Korean War (1950-53), or claiming the Nazi-Soviet Pact was signed after the invasion of Poland. Also, students sometimes confuse the dates of Truman Doctrine (1947) and Marshall Plan (1948) or suggest that the Warsaw Pact came before NATO. These mistakes signal a weak grasp of the narrative and prevent you from making valid causal links.
Create a clear timeline from 1919 to at least 1962. Mark the Treaty of Versailles, Locarno (1925), Wall Street Crash (1929), Hitler's chancellorship (1933), remilitarisation (1936), Munich (1938), start of WWII (1939), Yalta/Potsdam, Berlin Blockade, Korean War, up to the Cuban Missile Crisis. A quick glance before the exam can prevent basic chronology blunders and help you see patterns of cause and effect.
