1. States of Matter and Kinetic Particle Theory |

The three states of matter are solid, liquid and gas. In solids, particles are closely packed in a regular pattern and vibrate in fixed positions. Liquids have particles that are close together but can move past each other, allowing the liquid to flow. Gases have particles that are far apart and move rapidly in random directions.

The kinetic particle theory explains state changes: melting, boiling, freezing, condensation and sublimation. When a solid is heated, particles gain kinetic energy, vibrate more vigorously and eventually overcome the forces holding them in place, leading to melting. Further heating gives particles enough energy to escape the liquid's surface as a gas (evaporation/boiling). The reverse happens on cooling, when particles lose kinetic energy and the attractive forces between them pull them back into a more ordered arrangement.

Particle spacing 粒子间距Very close 很近Close 较近Far apart 很远
Motion 运动Vibrate in place 原地振动Slide past each other 相互滑动Fast random motion 快速无规则运动

Diffusion provides experimental evidence for the kinetic model. When bromine vapour is released in a gas jar, its brown colour spreads throughout the jar without stirring; when a crystal of potassium manganate(VII) is placed in water, the purple colour spreads through the liquid. Diffusion is faster at higher temperatures because particles have more kinetic energy, and slower for gases with a larger relative molecular mass because heavier molecules move more slowly at the same temperature.

2. Changes of State and Heating Curves |

Melting, boiling, freezing, condensation and sublimation are physical changes: no new substance is formed and the change can be reversed. Pure substances melt and boil at sharp, fixed temperatures, which is why melting point and boiling point are used as tests for purity. Impurities lower the melting point and raise the boiling point, and they spread the change over a temperature range instead of a single value.

A heating curve shows temperature against time as a substance is warmed steadily. During melting and boiling the curve is flat, because the energy supplied is used to break the forces between particles (latent heat) rather than to raise the temperature. On the plateau, the average kinetic energy of the particles stays constant, which is why the thermometer reading does not change even though heating continues.

Sublimation is the direct change from solid to gas without passing through the liquid state, and it happens with iodine, ammonium chloride and solid carbon dioxide (dry ice). Cooling curves are the mirror image of heating curves and show condensation and freezing plateaus. Both curves are frequently examined as graph-reading questions, so practise labelling the axes, marking the plateaus and naming the state present in each region.

3. Atomic Structure and the Periodic Table |

An atom consists of a nucleus containing protons and neutrons, surrounded by electrons in shells. A proton has a relative charge of +1 and a relative mass of 1, a neutron has no charge and a relative mass of 1, and an electron has a relative charge of -1 and a relative mass of about 1/1840. The nucleus therefore carries the positive charge and almost all the mass of the atom.

The atomic number (proton number) is the number of protons in an atom and defines the element; in a neutral atom it equals the number of electrons. The mass number (nucleon number) is the total number of protons plus neutrons. Isotopes are atoms of the same element with the same number of protons but different numbers of neutrons, such as ¹²C and ¹⁴C or ³⁵Cl and ³⁷Cl. Isotopes have identical chemical properties but slightly different physical properties.

Relative atomic mass is the average mass of the isotopes of an element, weighted according to their abundances, compared with 1/12 the mass of a carbon-12 atom. For chlorine with 75% ³⁵Cl and 25% ³⁷Cl:

Ar = (75 × 35 + 25 × 37) ÷ 100 = 35.5

Electrons occupy shells in the order 2, 8, 8, and the outer-shell electrons determine chemical behaviour. Elements in the same group of the Periodic Table have the same number of outer electrons and therefore similar properties: Group I alkali metals lose one electron to form 1⁺ ions, Group VII halogens gain one electron to form 1⁻ ions, and Group 0 noble gases have full outer shells and are unreactive. Across a period, elements change from metals through metalloids to non-metals, and the transition metals in the centre are hard, dense, catalytically active and form coloured compounds.

4. Chemical Bonding: Ionic, Covalent and Metallic |

Ionic bonding occurs between metals and non-metals: electrons are transferred from the metal atom to the non-metal atom, producing positive and negative ions that are held together by strong electrostatic attraction in a giant ionic lattice. Ionic compounds have high melting and boiling points, are usually soluble in water, and conduct electricity only when molten or dissolved, because the ions must be free to move.

Covalent bonding occurs between non-metal atoms, which share pairs of electrons to achieve full outer shells. Simple molecular substances such as H₂O, CO₂ and CH₄ have strong covalent bonds within molecules but weak intermolecular forces between molecules, so they have low melting and boiling points and do not conduct electricity. Giant covalent structures behave very differently: diamond has a rigid three-dimensional network of carbon atoms, graphite has layers of hexagonal rings with delocalised electrons between them, and silicon(IV) oxide has a similar rigid network to diamond.

Metallic bonding is described as a lattice of positive ions surrounded by a sea of delocalised electrons. These mobile electrons explain why metals conduct heat and electricity, while the ability of layers of ions to slide over one another explains why metals are malleable and ductile. Alloys such as brass and steel are harder than pure metals because atoms of different sizes disrupt the regular layers.

When drawing dot-and-cross diagrams, show only outer-shell electrons, use different symbols for electrons from different atoms, and add square brackets with the charge for ions such as [Na]⁺ and [Cl]⁻. For covalent molecules, check that every atom obeys the octet rule (except hydrogen, which needs two electrons).

5. Formulae, Equations and Moles |

Chemical formulae are written from the charges on ions or from valency. Common ions you must know include Na⁺, K⁺, NH₄⁺, Ca²⁺, Mg²⁺, Cu²⁺, Fe²⁺, Fe³⁺, Al³⁺, Cl⁻, Br⁻, I⁻, OH⁻, NO₃⁻, CO₃²⁻ and SO₄²⁻. Charges must balance, so calcium nitrate is Ca(NO₃)₂ and aluminium oxide is Al₂O₃.

必须记住的常见离子包括 Na⁺、K⁺、NH₄⁺、Ca²⁺、Mg²⁺、Cu²⁺、Fe²⁺、Fe³⁺、Al³⁺、Cl⁻、Br⁻、I⁻、OH⁻、NO₃⁻、CO₃²⁻ 和 SO₄²⁻。

Balanced equations must have the same number of each type of atom on both sides, and state symbols (s), (l), (g) and (aq) should be added where required. For example:

2H₂ + O₂ → 2H₂O    CaCO₃ → CaO + CO₂

and has a mass in grams equal to the relative atomic or molecular mass. The key relationships are:

÷ M    n = V ÷ 24 (gas volume in dm³ at r.t.p.)    c = n ÷ V (mol/dm³)

m³), write the balanced equation to find the mole ratio, and show every step of working. Percentage yield compares the actual mass obtained with the theoretical mass, and percentage purity compares the mass of pure substance with the total mass of the sample.

6. Chemical Energetics |

Exothermic reactions release energy to the surroundings and cause a temperature rise; examples include combustion, neutralisation, respiration and the reaction of water with calcium oxide. Endothermic reactions absorb energy from the surroundings and cause a temperature fall; examples include thermal decomposition, photosynthesis and the reaction between citric acid and sodium hydrogencarbonate.

The energy change comes from bond breaking and bond making. Breaking bonds requires energy (endothermic) and making bonds releases energy (exothermic). The overall enthalpy change is therefore the energy needed to break bonds in the reactants minus the energy released when bonds form in the products:

ΔH = Σ(bonds broken) − Σ(bonds formed)

If the result is negative the reaction is exothermic; if positive it is endothermic. Energy level diagrams show reactants and products as horizontal lines, with the difference in height equal to ΔH and the hump between them representing the activation energy. Catalysts lower the activation energy by providing an alternative pathway, but they do not change ΔH.
