1. What is Economics? |
Economics is a social science that studies how people, businesses and governments make choices when faced with limited resources. It is not just about money – it examines the production, distribution and consumption of goods and services, and how societies answer fundamental questions about what to produce, how to produce it and for whom to produce it.
At GCSE level, Eduqas splits the subject into two main areas: microeconomics, which looks at individual markets and decision-making, and macroeconomics, which deals with the whole economy. Understanding this distinction early will help you organise your revision notes effectively.
2. The Basic Economic Problem: Scarcity and Choice |
The basic economic problem arises because resources are scarce, but human wants are unlimited. Scarcity means there are not enough resources – land, labour, capital and enterprise – to satisfy all of society's desires. As a result, individuals, firms and governments must make choices, and every choice involves an opportunity cost.
Opportunity cost is defined as the next best alternative forgone when a choice is made. For example, if a government chooses to spend £10 billion on a new railway, the opportunity cost might be the hospitals or schools that could have been built with that money. In your exam, be ready to identify and explain opportunity cost in different contexts.
3. Factors of Production |
Resources, often called factors of production, are the inputs used to produce goods and services. The four main factors are land (all natural resources), labour (human effort), capital (man-made aids for production, such as machinery) and enterprise (the willingness to take risks and combine the other factors).
Each factor earns a reward: land receives rent, labour earns wages, capital receives interest and enterprise earns profit. A modern economy also highlights the importance of human capital – the skills and knowledge that make labour more productive – which is central to the UK's shift towards a knowledge-based economy.
4. Demand: The Consumer's Side |
Demand is the quantity of a good or service that consumers are willing and able to buy at a given price over a period of time. The law of demand states that, ceteris paribus, as the price of a good rises, the quantity demanded falls, and vice versa. This inverse relationship is shown by a downward-sloping demand curve.
Movements along the demand curve are caused solely by a change in the good's own price. A shift of the entire demand curve occurs when a non-price factor changes, such as income, tastes, advertising, the price of substitutes or complements, and population size. Use the acronym "ITAPP" (Income, Tastes, Advertising, Prices of other goods, Population) to remember these demand shifters.
5. Supply: The Producer's Side |
Supply reflects the behaviour of producers: the quantity of a good or service that firms are willing and able to offer for sale at a given price. The law of supply says that, ceteris paribus, as price increases, the quantity supplied increases. The supply curve therefore slopes upward.
A change in price leads to a movement along the supply curve. Shifts of the curve are caused by changes in costs of production, indirect taxes, subsidies, technology, weather (especially for agricultural goods) and the number of sellers. A rightward shift means more is supplied at every price, often due to lower costs or improved technology.
6. Price Mechanism and Equilibrium |
The interaction of demand and supply in a free market determines the equilibrium price and quantity. At equilibrium, the quantity demanded equals the quantity supplied and there is no tendency for change. If price is above equilibrium, a surplus pushes price down; if below, a shortage pushes price up.
The price mechanism has three key functions: signalling, incentives and rationing. Rising prices signal to producers to increase supply, give consumers an incentive to cut back, and ration scarce resources to those most willing to pay. Eduqas often asks you to apply these functions to real-world markets, such as housing or energy.
7. Elasticity: Responsiveness of Demand |
Price elasticity of demand (PED) measures how responsive quantity demanded is to a change in price. It is calculated as:
PED = % Change in Quantity Demanded ÷ % Change in Price
If PED > 1, demand is price elastic (luxuries, goods with many substitutes). If PED < 1, demand is price inelastic (necessities, addictive goods). A value of exactly 1 is unitary elastic. Knowledge of elasticity helps firms predict the effect of price changes on total revenue and is crucial for analysing the impact of indirect taxes.
8. Market Failure and Government Intervention |
Market failure occurs when the price mechanism fails to allocate resources efficiently, leading to a net welfare loss to society. Common causes include externalities (spillover effects on third parties), public goods, information gaps and the existence of monopoly power.
Negative externalities, such as pollution from a factory, mean that too much of a good is produced because the social cost exceeds the private cost. Governments can intervene through taxation (e.g. sugar tax), regulations, tradable permits, or by providing information. Eduqas requires you to evaluate the effectiveness of such policies while keeping diagrams clear and labelled.
9. Introduction to Macroeconomics |
Macroeconomics studies the economy as a whole, focusing on broad aggregates like total output, unemployment, inflation and trade. The main macroeconomic objectives for the UK government are sustainable economic growth, low and stable inflation, low unemployment, a satisfactory balance of payments and a fair distribution of income.
The circular flow of income is a foundational model showing flows of money, goods and services between households and firms. Injections (investment, government spending, exports) boost economic activity, while leakages (saving, taxes, imports) reduce it. Equilibrium occurs when total injections equal total leakages.
10. Economic Growth and Living Standards |
Economic growth is usually measured by the percentage change in real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) – the value of all goods and services produced in a country, adjusted for inflation. Short-run growth occurs when spare capacity is used; long-run growth requires an increase in the economy's productive potential.
Rising GDP per capita tends to improve living standards, but GDP has limitations: it ignores inequality, non-market activities like volunteering, and negative externalities such as pollution. Alternative measures, such as the Human Development Index (HDI), combine income with health and education indicators to give a broader picture of welfare.
11. Inflation and Unemployment |
Inflation is a sustained rise in the general price level, eroding the purchasing power of money. In the UK, the Bank of England targets a 2% inflation rate, measured by the Consumer Prices Index (CPI). Causes of inflation include demand-pull (excess aggregate demand) and cost-push (rising production costs).
Unemployment represents those who are willing and able to work but cannot find a job. Main types include cyclical (due to low demand), structural (mismatch of skills) and frictional (between jobs). High unemployment reduces tax revenue and increases government spending on benefits, creating an opportunity cost for public services.
12. International Trade and Globalisation |
International trade allows countries to specialise in producing goods where they have a comparative advantage and then exchange them. This raises global output and gives consumers access to a wider variety of goods at lower prices. The UK's trade with the EU and countries like China and the USA forms an essential part of the Eduqas syllabus.
However, free trade can also create challenges: domestic industries may decline, leading to structural unemployment, and developing economies may face exploitation. Globalisation – the increasing integration of economies through trade, investment and technology – brings both opportunities and risks, and you will be expected to evaluate these using real-world examples.
