📚 WJEC Year 11 Economics: Summer Bridging and Transition Course | WJEC 11
Welcome to your Year 11 WJEC Economics summer bridging course. This programme is designed to smooth your transition from the microeconomic foundations covered in Year 10 to the macroeconomic themes you will explore in Year 11. You will consolidate key concepts such as opportunity cost, demand and supply, and elasticity, before diving into the big-picture topics of economic growth, unemployment, inflation, government policy, and international trade. Use this resource to build confidence, fill any knowledge gaps, and start the academic year ahead of the curve.
1. Why This Bridging Course Matters |
The leap from Year 10 to Year 11 in WJEC Economics is significant. Unit 1 introduced you to how markets work and why they sometimes fail. Unit 2 shifts your focus to the whole economy - national output, employment, prices, and Britain's trade with the world. This bridging course ensures that your foundational knowledge is rock-solid while giving you a clear preview of what lies ahead, so you can start Year 11 with confidence and a strategic approach to revision.
Six to eight weeks is long enough to lose a habit and short enough to build one. Students who do nothing between July and September typically return having forgotten the definition of price elasticity, or the difference between a shift in demand and a movement along the demand curve. Those who spend even forty focused minutes a week revisiting core material begin the autumn term already fluent in the vocabulary that Year 11 lessons assume you have.
By the end of this course you will have:
- A consolidated microeconomic toolkit: scarcity, opportunity cost, demand and supply, elasticity and market failure.
- A working preview of macroeconomics: growth, unemployment, inflation, policy and trade.
- A weekly study plan that fits around your summer commitments.
- Exam technique habits that will serve you right through to the final papers.
2. What You Covered in Year 10: Microeconomic Foundations | 10
Before you move forward, check that you genuinely own the Year 10 material. The WJEC specification builds cumulatively: the basic economic problem is not a throwaway opening topic, it is the assumption on which every later argument rests. If scarcity did not exist, there would be no prices, no choices and no need for economics at all.
The core Year 10 content you must be able to state, explain and apply includes the following:
- The basic economic problem: unlimited wants and finite resources.
- The three questions: what to produce, how to produce it, and for whom.
- Factors of production: land, labour, capital and enterprise.
- Economic agents: consumers, firms and government.
- The price mechanism: demand, supply, equilibrium and the functions of price.
- Elasticity: price, income and cross elasticity of demand.
- Market failure: externalities, public goods, information gaps and market power.
A useful test of understanding is whether you can define a term, give a real UK example, and explain the consequence of a change - all in two or three sentences. If any of the terms above fails that test, flag it now for week one of your summer plan.
3. Opportunity Cost: The Foundation of Economic Thinking |
Opportunity cost is the value of the next best alternative forgone when a choice is made. It is deliberately narrow: it is not the sum of everything you gave up, but the single best option you rejected. Governments, firms and households all face it, which is why economists say there is no such thing as a free lunch.
Opportunity cost = value of the next best alternative forgone
Consider a government deciding to spend £20bn on a new rail link. The opportunity cost is not "£20bn of spending" - that is simply the money transferred. The opportunity cost is the hospital wards, school places or tax cuts that the same £20bn could have funded instead. When you write about opportunity cost in an exam, always name the specific alternative that has been sacrificed.
The production possibility curve (PPC) is the classic diagram for showing opportunity cost. A point on the curve is productively efficient, a point inside the curve indicates unemployed resources, and a point outside is currently unattainable. Moving along the curve from capital goods to consumer goods has an opportunity cost measured by the slope of the curve - and the concave shape reflects increasing opportunity cost as resources become less suited to their new use.
4. Demand and Supply: Reading the Market |
The law of demand states that, other things being equal, as price rises the quantity demanded falls. The demand curve slopes downwards because of the income effect, the substitution effect and diminishing marginal utility. The law of supply states that as price rises the quantity supplied rises, because higher prices raise the potential for profit and cover rising marginal costs.
You must be able to distinguish clearly between a movement along a curve and a shift of the curve. A change in the good's own price causes movement along the curve. A change in any condition of demand or supply causes the whole curve to shift.
Conditions of demand: population, advertising, substitutes and complements, income, tastes and fashion, interest rates, expectations.
Conditions of supply: costs of production, technology, taxes and subsidies, weather, number of producers, expectations.
In a free market, equilibrium is reached where demand equals supply. Price then performs three functions: rationing (scarce goods go to those willing to pay), signalling (high prices tell producers where to allocate resources) and incentive (profit motivates firms to supply more). If demand rises while supply is unchanged, equilibrium price ↑ and quantity ↑. If supply rises while demand is unchanged, equilibrium price ↓ and quantity ↑.
5. Elasticity: How Responsive Are Consumers and Firms? |
Elasticity measures responsiveness. It is the single most useful tool for turning a simple supply-and-demand answer into a strong analytical one, because it tells you how large an effect a price change will actually have.
PED = %ΔQd ÷ %ΔP
PES = %ΔQs ÷ %ΔP
YED = %ΔQd ÷ %ΔY
f PED < 1, demand is inelastic and a price rise increases total revenue; if PED = 1, demand is unit elastic and total revenue is unchanged. This revenue rule is the reason train companies can raise peak fares and still earn more, while a luxury carmaker cutting prices may sell many more cars but earn less in total.
Income elasticity of demand (YED) tells you how demand responds to a change in income. A positive YED indicates a normal good; a value between 0 and 1 indicates a necessity; a value above 1 indicates a luxury; a negative YED indicates an inferior good, such as own-brand supermarket food, for which demand falls as incomes rise.
Price elasticity of supply (PES) is largely determined by time and spare capacity. Firms with unused capacity and large stocks can respond quickly, so supply is more elastic; agriculture, where crops take a season to grow, is inelastic in the short run. When explaining elasticity in an exam, always give the determinant, not just the label.
6. Market Failure: When Markets Get It Wrong |
Market failure occurs when the free market mechanism allocates resources inefficiently, so that social welfare is not maximised. It is not the same as a market simply producing something you dislike; it requires a specific divergence between private and social costs or benefits.
Negative externalities, such as pollution from a factory, mean marginal social cost exceeds marginal private cost, so the good is over-produced. Positive externalities, such as education or vaccination, mean marginal social benefit exceeds marginal private benefit, so the good is under-produced.
MSC = MPC + MEC | MSB = MPB + MEB
Public goods are non-rival and non-excludable, which creates the free rider problem: no private firm will supply street lighting or national defence profitably, so government provision is required. Other sources of market failure include information gaps (patients cannot judge a dentist's skill), monopoly power restricting output to raise price, and factor immobility leaving workers unemployed in one region while vacancies exist in another.
Government responses include indirect taxes to internalise negative externalities, subsidies for positive externalities, regulation and minimum standards, information campaigns, tradable permits and direct provision. Each remedy carries its own risk of government failure: taxes may be regressive, subsidies may be captured by producers, and regulation brings administration and compliance costs.
7. The Year 11 Shift: From Micro to Macro | 11
In Year 11 the unit of analysis changes. Instead of asking why the price of a single good changes, you ask how many goods and services the whole country produces, how many people have jobs, how fast prices in general are rising, and whether the nation is paying its way in the world.
