1. Characteristics of Living Organisms |
All living organisms share seven life processes, often remembered by the acronym MRS GREN: Movement, Respiration, Sensitivity, Growth, Reproduction, Excretion, and Nutrition. Movement can be locomotion or internal movement. Respiration is the chemical release of energy from food. Sensitivity means detecting and responding to changes in the environment. Growth is a permanent increase in size. Reproduction is producing offspring. Excretion is removal of metabolic waste. Nutrition is obtaining food for energy and materials.
For example, plants exhibit movement when leaves turn towards light (phototropism), and animals run or contract muscles. Respiration occurs in every living cell, releasing ATP. Sensitivity is shown when an amoeba moves away from a chemical. Growth in trees adds annual rings. Excretion includes the elimination of carbon dioxide from the lungs. Nutrition in green plants involves photosynthesis.
2. Cell Structure and Function |
Cells are the basic structural and functional units of life. The main organelles include the nucleus, which contains genetic material; the cytoplasm, where many metabolic reactions occur; the cell membrane, which controls passage of substances; mitochondria, where aerobic respiration takes place; and ribosomes, which synthesise proteins. Plant cells additionally have a rigid cell wall made of cellulose, a large permanent vacuole, and chloroplasts for photosynthesis.
y skills involve calculating magnification and size using the formula: magnification = image size ÷ actual size. Staining with iodine or methylene blue can highlight specific structures.
magnification = image size ÷ actual size
3. Movement of Substances into and out of Cells |
Substances move across cell membranes by diffusion, osmosis, and active transport. Diffusion is the net movement of particles from a region of higher concentration to a region of lower concentration, down a concentration gradient. It is a passive process that does not require energy. Oxygen and carbon dioxide diffuse across membranes during gas exchange.
Osmosis is the diffusion of water molecules through a partially permeable membrane from a dilute solution to a more concentrated solution. It occurs down the water potential gradient. Plant cells become turgid when placed in pure water and plasmolysed in strong sugar solution. Animal cells may burst (lysis) in dilute solution and shrink in concentrated solution.
Active transport requires energy from ATP to move ions or molecules against the concentration gradient, using carrier proteins. Examples include uptake of mineral ions by root hairs and reabsorption of glucose in kidney tubules.
4. Biological Molecules and Enzymes |
Key biological molecules include carbohydrates (sugars and starch), lipids (fats and oils), and proteins. They are made up of smaller units: carbohydrates from simple sugars like glucose, proteins from amino acids, and lipids from fatty acids and glycerol. Food tests: Benedict's test for reducing sugars, iodine solution for starch, Biuret test for proteins, and ethanol emulsion test for lipids.
