1. Atomic Structure and the Periodic Table Refresher |
The atom consists of a small central nucleus containing protons and neutrons, surrounded by electrons arranged in energy levels (shells). The atomic number (proton number) defines the element, while the mass number is the sum of protons and neutrons. Isotopes are atoms of the same element with different numbers of neutrons, thus having the same atomic number but different mass numbers, e.g., carbon-12 and carbon-14. Electrons fill shells in the order 2,8,8 for the first 20 elements, determining chemical behaviour.
The Periodic Table arranges elements by increasing atomic number. Vertical columns are called groups; elements in the same group have the same number of outer electrons and similar chemical properties. Horizontal rows are periods, indicating the number of occupied electron shells. Trends down the groups include increasing reactivity in Group 1 (alkali metals) and decreasing reactivity in Group 7 (halogens). Group 0 noble gases are unreactive because they have full outer shells.
2. Chemical Bonding: Ionic, Covalent, and Metallic |
Ionic bonding occurs when metals transfer electrons to non-metals, forming oppositely charged ions that attract electrostatically in a giant ionic lattice. Compounds like sodium chloride, NaCl, have high melting and boiling points and conduct electricity when molten or dissolved because the ions are free to move. The formula of an ionic compound reflects the balance of charges, e.g., magnesium oxide MgO, calcium chloride CaCl₂.
Covalent bonding involves the sharing of electron pairs between non-metal atoms. Simple molecular substances such as water, H₂O, and carbon dioxide, CO₂, consist of small molecules with weak intermolecular forces, resulting in low melting points. In contrast, giant covalent structures like diamond and silicon dioxide, SiO₂, have a continuous network of strong covalent bonds, giving them very high melting points. Graphite is another form of carbon where layers of covalently bonded atoms slide easily over each other.
Metallic bonding is the attraction between a lattice of positive metal ions and a 'sea' of delocalised outer electrons. This structure explains the high electrical and thermal conductivity of metals, as well as their malleability (can be hammered into shape) and ductility (can be drawn into wires). Alloys, such as brass and steel, are mixtures of metals with other elements, often harder due to disrupted atomic layers.
3. Chemical Formulae and Equations: Conservation of Mass |
Writing correct chemical formula requires knowledge of valency or common ion charges. For example, aluminium ions Al³⁺ and oxide ions O²⁻ combine to form Al₂O₃. Chemical equations must be balanced to satisfy the law of conservation of mass: the number of atoms of each element must be the same on both sides of the arrow. State symbols indicate the physical state: (s) solid, (l) liquid, (g) gas, (aq) aqueous solution.
ative masses are the foundation for quantitative calculations involving moles and concentrations.
4. Quantitative Chemistry: Moles and Calculations |
or amount of substance. One mole of any substance contains 6.02 × 10²³ particles (Avogadro' een reactants and products. For the reaction 2Mg + O₂ → 2MgO, 2 moles of Mg react with 1 mole of O₂ to produce 2 moles of MgO.
ation experiments use the known concentration of one solution to determine the unknown concentration of another by reaching exact neutralisation. These calculations are fundamental to practical chemistry.
5. Energy Changes: Exothermic and Endothermic Reactions |
Chemical reactions involve energy changes. In an exothermic reaction, energy is released to the surroundings, causing the temperature to rise (e.g., combustion, neutralisation). In an endothermic reaction, energy is absorbed from the surroundings, causing a temperature drop (e.g., thermal decomposition). Energy profile diagrams show the energy of reactants and products, with the activation energy being the minimum energy needed to start a reaction.
on can be estimated using bond energies: ΔH = sum of energies of bonds broken − sum of energies of bonds formed. If more energy is released on bond making than is taken in on bond breaking, the reaction is exothermic (negative ΔH).
6. Rates of Reaction and Equilibrium |
The rate of a chemical reaction depends on: concentration of reactants in solution, pressure of gaseous reactants, temperature, surface area of solid reactants, and the presence of a catalyst. Collision theory states that particles must collide with energy equal to or greater than the activation energy and with the correct orientation for a reaction to occur. Increasing temperature increases both collision frequency and the energy of collisions, leading to a faster rate.
