1. Why Do Organisms Need Gas Exchange? |
All living cells require energy to carry out life processes. This energy is released during respiration, a chemical reaction that uses oxygen to break down glucose and produces carbon dioxide as a by‑product. Therefore, organisms must obtain a constant supply of oxygen and remove excess carbon dioxide. For small single‑celled organisms, diffusion across the cell membrane is sufficient. However, larger multicellular organisms need specialised gas exchange systems because diffusion alone is too slow over long distances.
2. Features of Efficient Gas Exchange Surfaces |
Effective gas exchange surfaces share four key features: a large surface area to maximise diffusion; a thin surface to keep the diffusion distance short; a rich blood supply to maintain a steep concentration gradient by quickly carrying gases away; and good ventilation to ensure fresh air constantly reaches the surface. In humans, the alveoli in the lungs possess all these characteristics, enabling rapid oxygen uptake and carbon dioxide removal.
3. The Human Respiratory System: Structure and Function |
The human respiratory system consists of a series of organs that conduct air to the sites of gas exchange. Air enters through the nasal passages, where it is warmed, moistened and filtered by hairs and mucus.
It then passes through the pharynx (throat) and larynx (voice box), which contains the vocal cords. The epiglottis prevents food from entering the airway during swallowing.
The trachea is a wide tube strengthened by C‑shaped cartilage rings that keep it open. The trachea branches into two bronchi (one to each lung), which further divide into smaller bronchioles, finally ending in clusters of tiny air sacs called alveoli.
Each alveolus is surrounded by a network of capillaries, bringing blood close to the inhaled air for rapid diffusion of gases. Mucus in the airways traps dust and pathogens, while cilia on the epithelial lining sweep the mucus upwards to the throat to be swallowed, keeping the lungs clean.
4. The Mechanism of Breathing: Inhalation and Exhalation |
During inhalation, the diaphragm muscles contract and the diaphragm flattens from its dome shape. At the same time, the external intercostal muscles contract, pulling the ribcage upwards and outwards. These actions increase the volume of the thoracic cavity, which lowers the pressure inside the lungs below atmospheric pressure. Air is drawn in through the airways to equalise the pressure.
Exhalation is largely a passive process at rest. The diaphragm and external intercostal muscles relax, causing the ribcage to move down and inwards and the diaphragm to resume its dome shape. The thoracic volume decreases, lung pressure increases above atmospheric pressure, and air is forced out.
During forced exhalation, the internal intercostal muscles contract and the abdominal muscles push the diaphragm up more quickly, producing a stronger expiration.
5. Adaptations of Alveoli for Gas Exchange |
Alveoli are adapted for efficient gas exchange in several ways. They provide an enormous combined surface area (around 70 m² in adult lungs). The alveolar wall consists of a single layer of flattened epithelial cells, making it extremely thin, minimising the diffusion distance. A dense capillary network surrounds each alveolus, ensuring a continuous blood flow to carry absorbed oxygen away and deliver carbon dioxide. The inner surface is coated with a thin film of moisture, which allows gases to dissolve before diffusing, and a surfactant reduces surface tension to prevent alveolar collapse.
6. Gas Exchange at the Alveoli and in the Tissues |
In the lungs, oxygen diffuses from the alveolar air space into the blood capillaries because the oxygen concentration is higher in the alveoli than in the deoxygenated blood arriving from the pulmonary artery. Carbon dioxide diffuses in the opposite direction, from the blood into the alveoli, down its concentration gradient.
At the tissues, oxygen diffuses out of the capillaries into the cells where it is used for respiration, while carbon dioxide, produced by active cells, diffuses into the blood to be carried back to the lungs. Both processes rely on simple diffusion driven by concentration gradients. Haemoglobin in red blood cells binds oxygen to form oxyhaemoglobin, which greatly increases the oxygen‑
