1. Binary to Denary Conversion Errors |
ate 1011₂ as 1 × 1 + 0 × 2 + 1 × 4 + 1 × 8 = 13 instead of the correct answer of 11. A second version of the same mistake is to forget that the rightmost digit is the 2⁰ column, worth 1 rather than 2, which throws the final total out by one.
1011₂ = (1 × 2³) + (0 × 2²) + (1 × 2¹) + (1 × 2⁰) = 8 + 0 + 2 + 1 = 11
lue before summing. Always anchor the rightmost bit to 2⁰. Practise with strings of different lengths, for example 1101₂ = 8 + 4 + 0 + 1 = 13, so that the pattern becomes automatic rather than memorised.
2. Data Units: Bits, Bytes and Prefixes |
Many students incorrectly assume that 1 kilobyte equals exactly 1000 bytes because of the everyday metric meaning of 'kilo'. They also mix up bits (b) and bytes (B), which produces eight-fold errors in file-size calculations, storage estimates and download times. In a CCEA examination, a careless b/B error can cost the whole calculation mark even when the method is correct.
Note the distinction between binary prefixes (powers of 1024) and decimal prefixes used by some storage manufacturers (powers of 1000). If a question states the convention, follow it; if not, state your assumption. For download times, convert the file size into bits first, then divide by the connection speed:
time = (file size in MB × 1024 × 8) ÷ speed in Mbit/s
s. Writing the unit at every step is the single best defence against the eight-fold error.
3. Hexadecimal Conversion Mistakes |
F = 15. A second error is to use powers of 10 instead of powers of 16, so 2F₁₆ is wrongly evaluated as 20 + 15 rather than 2 × 16 + 15.
学生必须记住 A = 10、B = 11、C = 12、D = 13、E = 14、F = 15。
2F₁₆ = (2 × 16¹) + (15 × 16⁰) = 32 + 15 = 47₁₀
essary. For example 1011 1110₂ becomes B (1011₂ = 11) followed by E (1110₂ = 14), giving BE₁₆. Splitting into groups of three is a reliable sign that a student has confused hexadecimal with octal.
例如 1011 1110₂ 分成 B(1011₂ = 11)和 E(1110₂ = 14),得到 BE₁₆。
4. Character Encoding: ASCII and Unicode | 字符编码:ASCII 与 Unicode
A widespread misconception is that ASCII can represent every character in every language. In fact standard ASCII uses 7 bits and covers 128 characters, while its 8-bit extension covers 256 - enough for English and common symbols, but nowhere near enough for Chinese, Arabic or emoji. Unicode was created precisely because ASCII ran out of space, and it uses a variable number of bits per character.
Students also forget that a character is not the same thing as a byte. A single character in a 7-bit ASCII document occupies 7 bits, not necessarily 8. When calculating text file sizes, always multiply the number of characters by the number of bits per character and then convert:
250 characters × 7 bits = 1750 bits ÷ 8 = 218.75 B ≈ 219 B
Read the question carefully: if it says '8-bit ASCII' or 'one byte per character' use that figure, and if it says Unicode, state the encoding you assume rather than guessing silently.
5. RAM, ROM and Secondary Storage |
Year 10 students often describe RAM as 'the memory that stores your files' and ROM as 'the place where programs are saved'. Both statements are wrong. RAM is volatile working memory that holds the programs and data currently in use; ROM is non-volatile and typically holds the bootstrap or firmware needed to start the computer. Files, in contrast, live in secondary storage such as an SSD or HDD.
|---|---|---|---|
| Volatile? | 是否易失 | Yes 是 | No 否 | No 否 |
| Typical speed | 速度 | Very fast 极快 | Fast 快 | Slowest 最慢 |
| Typical capacity | 容量 | 8-32 GB | A few MB 数 MB | 256 GB - 4 TB |
Another misconception is that adding RAM always makes a computer faster. Extra RAM reduces the need for virtual memory and lets more programs run at once, but it does not increase the clock speed of the processor. Equally, virtual memory is not a replacement for RAM - it is slower because data must travel to and from the disk.
6. CPU Performance: Cores, Clock Speed and Cache | CPU
Students frequently believe that doubling the number of cores doubles the speed of the computer. This is only true for tasks that can be split into parallel threads. Many programs are largely sequential, so four cores rarely run four times as fast as one. Clock speed is measured in gigahertz (GHz) and describes cycles per second, while cores are separate processing units - the two are different ideas and must not be confused.
A third, quieter misconception is about the fetch-decode-execute cycle. Students sometimes say the CPU 'decodes the instruction in the ALU'. In fact the control unit decodes, the ALU performs arithmetic and logic, and registers such as the program counter and accumulator hold the data along the way. Cache is not a type of disk either - it is small, very fast memory inside or beside the CPU that reduces the average time to fetch instructions and data.
7. Networking: Bandwidth, Latency, IP and MAC | 网络:带宽、延迟、IP 与 MAC
Bandwidth and latency are often used as if they were the same thing. Bandwidth is the maximum amount of data that can be transferred per second (for example 100 Mbit/s); latency is the delay before data starts to arrive, measured in milliseconds. A satellite link can have high bandwidth but poor latency, which is why online gaming feels laggy even on a fast connection.
Students also confuse IP and MAC addresses. An IP address is a logical, hierarchical address that can change when a device joins a different network, and it is used for routing packets between networks. A MAC address is a physical address burned into the network interface card by the manufacturer, and it is used for communication within a local network. Saying 'the MAC address routes packets across the internet' is a classic exam error.
Finally, remember that the internet is a network of networks, while the World Wide Web is a service that runs on it using HTTP and HTTPS. Wi-Fi is a way of connecting to a local network, not a synonym for internet access.
8. Cyber Security: Encryption versus Hashing |
The most damaging security misconception is that encryption and hashing are the same thing. Encryption is reversible: plaintext is turned into ciphertext with a key, and the same key (symmetric) or a matching key pair (asymmetric) turns it back again. Hashing is a one-way process that produces a fixed-length digest, and it is used to check integrity or to store passwords, not to recover original data.
|---|---|---|
| Reversible?
| Uses a key?
Two further errors are common. First, students think HTTPS guarantees a website is trustworthy - it only guarantees the connection is encrypted and the certificate matches the domain. Second, they believe a strong password makes a system secure on its own, ignoring phishing, malware, SQL injection and denial of
