1. Arithmetic Mean |
The arithmetic mean (often just called the mean) is the sum of all values divided by the total number of values. It is the most common measure of central tendency. The Greek letter sigma (Σ) means 'sum', x represents each individual score, and n is the sample size.
Mean = Σx / n
For example, the mean of scores 4, 7, 9, 12 is (4+7+9+12) / 4 = 32 / 4 = 8.
2. Median | 中位数
The median is the middle value when all scores are arranged in ascending (or descending) order. If there is an odd number of scores, the median is the central score. If the number is even, the median is the mean of the two central scores.
Median position = (n + 1) / 2
n odd set: 3, 5, 9 → median = 5. For an even set: 2, 4, 7, 9 → median = (4 + 7) / 2 = 5.5.
3. Mode | 众数
The mode is the score that occurs most frequently in a dataset. A set of scores can have one mode (unimodal), two modes (bimodal), several modes (multimodal), or no mode if all values appear only once.
In the data set 2, 3, 3, 5, 7, 7, 7, 9, the mode is 7 because it appears three times.
4. Range | 全距
The range is the simplest measure of dispersion (spread). It shows the distance between the highest and lowest scores in a dataset.
Range = Max − Min
If the highest score is 95 and the lowest is 21, the range is 95 − 21 = 74.
5. Percentage Change |
Percentage change expresses how much a quantity has increased or decreased relative to its original value. A positive result indicates an increase, while a negative result indicates a decrease.
Percentage Change = ((New − Original) / Original) × 100%
If a memory score rises from 40 to 52, the percentage change is ((52 − 40) / 40) × 100% = 30% increase.
6. Converting Fractions, Decimals & Percentages |
In psychological research, data may appear as fractions, decimals or percentages. To convert a fraction to a decimal, divide the numerator by the denominator. To convert a decimal to a percentage, multiply by 100. Reverse conversions: divide a percentage by 100 to get a decimal; write a decimal as a fraction over a power of ten and simplify.
1/4 = 0.25 = 25% 3/5 = 0.6 = 60%
These conversions are essential when interpreting graphs or calculating proportional data.
7. Ratios & Proportions |
A ratio compares two quantities and is written as a:b. To simplify a ratio, divide both sides by their greatest common factor. A proportion represents a part of a whole, often expressed as a fraction or percentage.
If 18 out of 60 participants correctly recalled a word, the proportion is 18/60 = 0.3 = 30%, and the ratio of correct to incorrect is 18:42, which simplifies to 3:7.
8. Weber's Law |
Weber's Law describes the just noticeable difference (JND) – the smallest change in a stimulus that can be detected 50% of the time. The formula shows that the JND is a constant proportion of the initial stimulus intensity.
ΔI / I = k
0.02, meaning if you hold 100 g, you would need to add about 2 g to notice the difference.
9. Normal Distribution Empirical Rule |
Many psychological variables, such as IQ scores, are normally distributed, forming a symmetrical bell-shaped curve around the mean. The empirical rule tells us the approximate percentage of data falling within certain standard deviations (SD) of the mean.
Approximately 68% of data lie within ±1 SD of the mean, about 95% within ±2 SD, and about 99.7% within ±3 SD. This rule helps identify unusually high or low scores.
10. Yerkes-Dodson Law |
The Yerkes-Dodson Law states that performance increases with physiological or mental arousal, but only up to an optimal point. Beyond that, further arousal leads to a decline in performance. The graph forms an inverted U-shape.
Optimal arousal depends on task difficulty: simple or well-learned tasks require higher arousal for peak performance, whereas complex or new tasks are best performed with lower arousal.
