📚 Common Mistakes and How to Fix Them | 常见误区与纠正方法

Every year, many Year 11 students sitting the AQA English Literature exam lose marks not because they do not know the texts, but because they fall into predictable traps. These mistakes can feel minor, yet they consistently pull grades down from a 7 to a 5, or from a 5 to a 3. Understanding what the examiner really wants – and, just as importantly, what they do not want – is the first step towards writing answers that stand out. This guide walks you through the most common errors across the Shakespeare, 19th-century novel, modern text and poetry sections, and gives you practical correction strategies to turn those weaknesses into strengths.

1. Retelling the Plot Instead of Analysing |

The single most damaging habit is turning a literature essay into a story summary. You might write that Macbeth meets the witches, hears the prophecies and then kills Duncan – but unless you explore how Shakespeare presents Macbeth's ambition through imagery, soliloquy or dramatic irony, you are only scoring for AO1 (response to text) and ignoring AO2 (language, form and structure). AQA examiners are told to reward analysis, not narration. Every time you catch yourself saying 'and then', ask: 'Why has the writer made this happen at this moment, and how is it being shown?'

The fix is simple but requires discipline. Before you start a paragraph, decide on a 'big idea' – for example, the way unchecked ambition distorts Macbeth's perception of reality. Then select a quotation or moment that reveals this idea, and build your paragraph around the writer's choices. Instead of 'Lady Macbeth persuades him to kill Duncan', write 'Shakespeare crafts Lady Macbeth's imperatives and dismissal of Macbeth's masculinity to accelerate his moral collapse, revealing the destructive power of gendered manipulation.' The difference is between describing what happens and explaining how meaning is made.

2. Ignoring the Writer's Craft |

Perhaps you have highlighted a metaphor but have not explained why it matters, or you name a structural device without linking it to the text's themes. A phrase like 'Steinbeck uses animal imagery' will not earn AO2 marks unless you attach meaning: 'Steinbeck uses animal imagery to dehumanise Lennie, foreshadowing his violent end and reflecting the brutal nature of survival in Depression-era America.' Every literary device is a tool; do not list it without showing what it builds. AQA mark schemes explicitly expect students to analyse how writers use language, form and structure to create meanings and effects.

To correct this, train yourself to follow a three-step pattern for every quotation or feature you mention: identify the technique, illustrate with evidence, and interpret the effect on the reader or audience. For instance, in 'An Inspector Calls', Priestley uses the photograph as a structural device; identify it (the photograph is withheld from all but one character at a time), illustrate with a moment (only Mr Birling sees it in Act One), and interpret (this isolates each character, forcing individual accountability and exposing their selfishness). This pattern ensures you never comment on craft in isolation.

3. Vague or Missing Evidence |

A statement like 'Scrooge is presented as cold-hearted at the start of the novella' without a quotation or precise reference will only ever scrape a low band. AQA demands that answers are supported with 'references to the text'; these references can be direct quotations or close paraphrase, but they must be specific. Vague allusions, such as 'when he says something mean', tell the examiner you do not know the text well enough to be convincing. The same applies to poetry: if you discuss 'exposure' in Owen's poem but cannot quote 'merciless iced east winds that knive us', your argument lacks the foundation of AO1.

The best way to avoid this is to build a personal quotation bank for each text. Select five to seven short, powerful quotations for each main character or theme. Learn them by heart, along with a brief note on why each is significant. When you write an essay, mentally run through your bank and select the lines that best support your argument. Even if your memory falters in the exam, a close paraphrase ('When Lennie says he can go and live in a cave') can still work, but only if it is clearly tied to a specific moment. Aim for embedded quotations that flow naturally within your sentences, such as 'Macbeth's hallucinated dagger, "a dagger of the mind", embodies his psychological disintegration.' This keeps the evidence precise and analytical.

4. Superficial Understanding of Context |

Many students treat context as a box to tick: they throw in a fact about Victorian poverty or Jacobean beliefs about witchcraft without connecting it to the text's themes or the writer's purpose. For AQA Literature Paper 1 and 2, AO3 (context) is not a separate history test; it is about the relationship between the text and the context in which it was written and received. Writing 'Shakespeare wrote Macbeth because King James I was interested in witchcraft' and then moving on is a missed opportunity. You need to show how that context illuminates the text: how does the play's portrayal of the supernatural reflect and challenge Jacobean anxieties about treason and the divine right of kings?

in the text → why the writer might be using it to shape audience response. For example, in 'A Christmas Carol' at treated the poor harshly. Then link it: Dickens has Scrooge echo Malthusian attitudes ('decrease the surplus population' becomes a lens, not an add-on. Prepare contextual knowledge that is genuinely useful: for 'An Inspector Calls' , know about the Edwardian class system, the rise of socialism and the impact of the Titanic; for 'Power and Conflict' poetry, understand the Romantic rebellion against industrialisation or the trauma of WWI.

5. Poor Comparison in Poetry |

In AQA's 'Power and Conflict' or 'Love and Relationships' poetry clusters, a common disaster is writing two separate mini-essays rather than a genuine comparative analysis. You might discuss Ozymandias for two paragraphs, then London for two paragraphs, with no meaningful links. The 30-mark question demands that you compare the presentation of a theme across two poems; the highest marks go to candidates who weave the poems together, moving between them in each paragraph and using comparative connectives such as 'similarly', 'whereas', 'in contrast' and 'both poets'.

Plan your comparison around a shared conceptual idea, not just a theme word. Instead of 'both poems are about power', try 'both Shelley and Blake expose how power can be an illusion that corrupts and isolates its wielder'. Then, in each body paragraph, explore one aspect of that idea using evidence from both poems. For example: 'Shelley's statue, "half sunk", visually enacts the erosion of Ozymandias's power; similarly, Blake's "charter'd streets" suggest that power has already mapped and owned the lives of London's poor. However, while Shelley looks to the ancient past to warn tyrants, Blake's poem is an immediate, angry cry against present oppression.' This structure keeps the comparison alive and analytical.

6. Misreading the Question |

AQA examiners report that a surprising number of students write knowledgeable essays that fail to answer the specific question. If the task asks 'How does Shakespeare present the relationship between Macbeth and Lady Macbeth as a destructive force?' and you write a general essay on Macbeth's ambition, you are limiting your marks regardless of how brilliant your analysis is. The key words – 'relationship', 'destructive force' – must shape every paragraph. Circle or underline the operative terms in the question before you plan, and then use them explicitly in your topic sentences to keep yourself on track.

Practice deconstructing questions from past papers. Identify the focus character or theme, the directive word ('how', 'explore', 'to what extent') and the evaluative angle. For 'Explore how Dickens presents the theme of redemption in A Christmas Carol', do not just trace Scrooge's journey from miser to philanthropist; you must consistently examine how Dickens crafts this change to shape the reader's view of redemption. A quick plan that restates the question as an argument – 'Dickens presents redemption as a painful but possible transformation that relies on memory, empathy and fear' – will give you a clear thesis and ensure every paragraph directly addresses the task.

7. Weak Essay Structure |

An essay that starts with a promising introduction but then drifts into a jumble of unstructured ideas will not reach the higher levels. AQA mark schemes for both papers reward 'a coherent and structured argument'. This means your essay needs a clear introduction with a thesis, body paragraphs that each develop a distinct point with evidence and analysis, and a conclusion that does not merely repeat but draws the threads together with a final insight. A typical mistake is to skip planning and write chronologically through the text; in a modern text question on 'Lord of the Flies', a student might simply retell the events from the conch's first meeting to Piggy's death, losing the argument entirely.

sentence for each. Each topic sentence should be an analytical mini-claim, not a plot fact. For 'How does Golding present the breakdown of civilisation?', a topic sentence could be ' hor for the collapse of democratic order, shifting authority from reasoned debate to violent tyranny.' o or three embedded quotations and close analysis. A conclusion should consider the writer's overall message – a fragile construct easily shattered by innate savagery. Avoid starting a conclusion with 'In conclusion' in a mechanical way; integrate it smoothly.

8. Running Out of Time | 时间管理不当

Time pressure is intense in AQA English Literature exams. For Paper 1, you have 1 hour 45 minutes for two sections (Shakespeare and the 19th-century novel), giving roughly 50 minutes per essay after reading time. Many students spend too long on the Shakespeare extract and then rush the second essay, or they over-write an introduction and lose track. Running out of time on the poetry comparison in Paper 2 is even more common because it appears at the end. No matter how brilliant your ideas are, an unfinished essay cannot earn full marks.

Practice timed essays regularly, ideally in 45-minute chunks for each text. Allocate your time with precision: 5-7 minutes for planning and extracting the key terms from the extract or question, 35 minutes for writing, and 5 minutes for proofreading. During writing, keep an eye on the clock. If you are still on your second paragraph after 20 minutes, you need to accelerate and may need to condense your remaining points. A well-structured essay with three shorter but analytical paragraphs is far better than two beautifully detailed paragraphs and a blank page. In Paper 2, leave at least 45 minutes for the poetry comparison, and be ruthless about moving on from the unseen poetry section.

9. Ignoring Stage Directions in Drama |

When studying 'An Inspector Calls', 'Macbeth' or any modern drama, students often treat the text as if it were a novel, analysing only the dialogue. Yet AQA expects you to engage with the text as a play, including its performance aspects. Stage directions, silences, exits and entrances, and even the structure of acts and scenes are all part of the writer's craft. Ignoring them means you miss a whole layer of AO2. For instance, Priestley's direction that the lighting should be 'pink and intimate' until the Inspector's arrival, when it becomes 'brighter and harder', is a deliberate symbolic choice that underlines the shift from complacency to exposure.

To correct this, annotate your text with a performance eye. In 'Macbeth', note the opening thunder and lightning, the witches' riddling dialogue and the short, fragmented scenes that create a sense of chaos. When the ghost of Banquo appears and sits in Macbeth's place, that single stage direction is a visual representation of usurpation and guilt. Link these moments explicitly to your argument: 'Shakespeare uses the banquet scene's physical staging – the ghost occupying Macbeth's seat – to externalise his psychological torment and dramatise his irreversible break from the natural order.' Treat staging choices as evidence just like quotations.

10. Listing Techniques Without Effect |

A paragraph that reads 'The writer uses a simile. They also use alliteration. The use of enjambment creates flow' is almost entirely empty of analysis. Naming a technique is the starting point, not the end. AQA examiners want to see that you can explain how the technique works in that specific instance to create a particular effect on the reader. Generic statements like 'it makes the reader want to read on' or 'it paints a picture in the reader's mind' are worthless because they could apply to anything. You must tie the effect to the specific ideas and feelings the text explores.

Build a habit of asking 'What is the specific effect of this technique at this moment?' For example, in 'Exposure', Owen uses the personification of the wind: 'The merciless iced east winds that knive us'. Instead of merely noting personification, write: 'Owen's personification of the wind as a deliberate, malignant attacker ("merciless", "knive") strips the natural world of any comfort, suggesting that the soldiers' true enemy is not the distant German soldier but the indifferent aggression of nature itself, which inflicts a slow, psychological torture.' This connects technique to meaning and effect with precision. Practise by taking random quotations from your texts and writing two sentences that name the technique and then fully explain the effect.

11. Neglecting Writer's Overall Message |

It is easy to get lost in the details of a single extract and forget that the essay needs to show an understanding of the whole text. AQA questions are designed to test your grasp of the writer's overall ideas and intentions. A candidate who analyses the opening scene of 'A Christmas Carol' brilliantly, but does not link it to Scrooge's later transformation and Dickens's social critique, will not reach the top bands. The examiner is looking for a 'conceptualised' response – one that recognises patterns, themes and overarching messages across the entire work.

As part of your revision, create a one-sentence summary of each writer's central message for each text. For 'Macbeth': 'Shakespeare warns against the corrosive effects of unchecked ambition and the violation of natural order.' For 'Lord of the Flies': 'Golding exposes the darkness of the human heart and the fragility of civilisation under the pressure of fear.' Then, when you write about any passage or character, consciously connect your analysis back to that central message. In your conclusion, make sure you address what the writer wants the reader to think, feel or question, not just what happens to the characters. This elevates your essay from a competent description to a perceptive exploration.

12. Skipping Proofreading and Refinement |

Under exam pressure, spelling, punctuation and grammatical errors multiply. While AQA's mark scheme does not have a separate mark for technical accuracy in Literature essays, clarity is everything. If your sentences are garbled or your quotations are slightly misquoted to the point of meaninglessness, your AO1 and AO2 marks will suffer because the examiner cannot follow your argument. Common errors include missing apostrophes, comma splices and subject-verb disagreement, which can obscure your intended meaning.

Reserve the last five minutes of each essay time exclusively for proofreading. Read your essay slowly, line by line, checking for obvious slips. Make sure every character's name is spelled correctly – nothing angers an examiner more than 'McBeth' or 'Scroodge'. Verify that your embedded quotations are accurate enough; if you are unsure, paraphrase safely. Also check that your topic sentences actually align with your thesis and that each paragraph has a clear analytical focus. A few neat corrections can transform a messy script into a polished, professional argument.
