In Year 11, AQA GCSE Economics brings together everything you have learned into one big picture of how markets and economies work. This article pulls out the most important core concepts you need to master for Papers 1 and 2, covering microeconomics and macroeconomics in a clear, revision-friendly way.
1. Scarcity and Choice |
Economics exists because of scarcity. Resources are limited, but human wants are unlimited, so individuals, firms and governments must make choices about what to produce, how to produce and for whom to produce.
The opportunity cost of a decision is the value of the next best alternative forgone. If you spend an hour revising economics instead of maths, the opportunity cost is the benefit you would have gained from studying maths.
Factors of production are the inputs used to create goods and services. They are land (natural resources), labour (workforce), capital (machinery and equipment) and enterprise (the skill of bringing the other three together and taking risks).
2. Demand and Supply |
Demand is the quantity of a good or service consumers are willing and able to buy at a given price over a period of time. The law of demand states that, ceteris paribus, there is an inverse relationship between price and quantity demanded.
Movements along the demand curve occur when price changes, while shifts of the curve happen when a non-price factor (income, tastes, price of substitutes/complements, population) changes.
Supply is the quantity producers are willing and able to sell at a given price. The law of supply states a positive relationship between price and quantity supplied.
Equilibrium occurs where quantity demanded equals quantity supplied. Excess demand causes prices to rise, while excess supply pushes prices down. This is the price mechanism allocating resources.
3. Price Elasticity |
Price elasticity of demand (PED) measures the responsiveness of quantity demanded to a change in price. It is calculated as:
PED = (%ΔQd) / (%ΔP)
If |PED| > 1, demand is elastic; if |PED| < 1, demand is inelastic; if |PED| ED helps firms predict revenue changes: cutting price raises total revenue if demand is elastic, and lowers it if demand is inelastic.
of supply (PES) measures the responsiveness of quantity supplied to price changes. PES = (%ΔQs) / (%ΔP). Supply is elastic when firms can increase output easily and relatively quickly.
4. Market Structures and Competition |
Market structure affects pricing and output decisions. Perfect competition has many buyers and sellers, homogeneous products, no barriers to entry or exit, and perfect information. Firms are price takers.
Monopoly exists when a single firm dominates the market, often because of high barriers to entry (legal, economies of scale, ownership of key resources). Monopolists can restrict output and charge higher prices, potentially leading to market failure.
Competition generally benefits consumers through lower prices, higher quality and greater innovation. Governments may regulate monopolies or promote competition to protect consumer interests.
5. The Labour Market |
The demand for labour is derived from the demand for the goods and services that labour produces. Firms hire workers when the revenue generated by an extra worker (marginal revenue product) exceeds the wage cost.
Wages are determined by the interaction of demand and supply of labour. Supply depends on factors such as the wage rate, barriers to entry (qualifications, training), and non-wage benefits. Differentials in wages exist due to differences in skill, education, risk, and working conditions.
6. Production, Costs and Revenue |
Production converts inputs into outputs. Productivity measures output per unit of input (e.g., labour productivity). Specialisation and division of labour increase productivity, but repetitive tasks may lower worker motivation.
is total cost divided by output. Revenue is price × quantity sold. Profit = total revenue – total cost.
Economies of scale occur when average costs fall as output increases, owing to reasons like technical, purchasing or financial economies. Diseconomies of scale arise when further growth leads to rising average costs, often from communication and coordination problems.
7. Market Failure |
Market failure occurs when the price mechanism fails to allocate resources efficiently. Key causes include positive and negative externalities, public goods, and information asymmetry.
Negative externalities (e.g., pollution) impose costs on third parties. Positive externalities (e.g., vaccination) confer benefits on third parties. Both lead to a misallocation of resources because private costs/benefits differ from social costs/benefits.
Public goods are non-excludable and non-rival. Free-riding means they would be under-provided by the market (e.g., street lighting, national defence). Governments often intervene to provide these directly or subsidise their production.
8. Macroeconomic Objectives |
Governments typically aim for four main macroeconomic objectives: stable economic growth, low and stable unemployment, price stability (low inflation), and a sustainable balance of payments on the current account.
Economic growth is measured by the percentage change in real GDP. Full employment does not mean zero unemployment; some frictional and structural unemployment is normal. Price stability is commonly targeted at 2% CPI inflation. A current account deficit must be financeable in the long run.
9. Economic Growth |
Economic growth refers to an increase in a country's productive capacity, illustrated by an outward shift of the production possibility frontier (PPF) or long-run aggregate supply (LRAS). Short-run growth can come from making more use of existing spare capacity.
Key drivers of long-run growth include improvements in the quantity and quality of factors of production: investment in physical capital, better education and training, technological progress, and institutional stability. Growth raises living standards but may bring environmental costs.
10. Unemployment and Inflation |
Unemployment refers to people who are able, available and actively seeking work but cannot find a job. Common types include cyclical (due to low demand), structural (mismatch of skills), and frictional (between jobs). High unemployment wastes resources and increases government spending on benefits.
Inflation is the sustained rise in the general price level. In the UK it is measured by the Consumer Prices Index (CPI). Demand-pull inflation occurs when aggregate demand grows faster than aggregate supply. Cost-push inflation results from rising production costs (e.g., energy, wages). High inflation erodes purchasing power and can distort spending decisions.
11. Government Policies |
Fiscal policy involves changes in government spending and taxation to influence the economy. Expansionary fiscal policy (higher spending or lower taxes) boosts demand; contractionary policy does the opposite. A government budget deficit occurs when spending exceeds tax revenue.
Monetary policy uses interest rates and the money supply to manage demand. In the UK, the Bank of England sets the base rate. Lower interest rates encourage borrowing and spending, while higher rates cool an overheating economy.
Supply-side policies aim to increase the productive potential of the economy by improving the efficiency of factor markets. Examples include investment in education and training, tax reforms, and privatisation to increase competition.
12. International Trade and Globalisation |
International trade allows countries to specialise according to comparative advantage, increasing world output. The UK exports services (finance, insurance) and imports goods (cars, electronics). A current account deficit means imports exceed exports.
Protectionism uses tariffs, quotas and non-tariff barriers to shield domestic industries. While protecting jobs in the short run, it can raise prices and reduce choice for consumers. The World Trade Organisation (WTO) works to reduce trade barriers.
Globalisation is the increasing integration of the world's economies. It brings benefits such as access to larger markets and cheaper imports, but also challenges like deindustrialisation and increased competitive pressure on domestic firms. Multinational corporations (MNCs) play a key role by operating in many countries.
Exchange rates express one currency in terms of another. A depreciation of the pound makes UK exports cheaper and imports more expensive, potentially improving the current account. An appreciation has the opposite effect.
