1. Cell Structure |
All living organisms are built from cells. Animal cells contain a nucleus, cytoplasm, cell membrane, mitochondria and ribosomes. Plant cells have the same basic components but also possess a rigid cell wall, a permanent vacuole and chloroplasts. Bacterial cells are prokaryotic: they lack a true nucleus and instead have a single loop of chromosomal DNA, along with small rings of DNA called plasmids.
tron microscope reveals far greater detail at much higher magnifications. When drawing cells, you must follow biological drawing rules: use a sharp pencil, draw clear outlines without shading, and label structures with straight lines.
2. Cell Division and Growth |
Cell division by mitosis produces two genetically identical daughter cells. This process is essential for growth, repair and asexual reproduction. Before mitosis, the cell's DNA replicates, ensuring each new cell gets a full copy of the genetic information. The chromosomes line up at the centre of the cell, are pulled apart to opposite poles, and then the cytoplasm divides.
Stem cells are unspecialised cells that can differentiate into various cell types. In animals, embryonic stem cells can form any cell type, while adult stem cells are more limited. Plant meristem cells retain the ability to divide and differentiate throughout the plant's life. Stem cell research holds promise for treating conditions such as diabetes and paralysis, though it raises ethical considerations.
3. Transport Across Membranes |
Substances move into and out of cells by diffusion, osmosis and active transport. Diffusion is the net movement of particles from a region of higher concentration to a region of lower concentration, down the concentration gradient. It is a passive process requiring no energy. Oxygen and carbon dioxide move across cell membranes by diffusion.
Osmosis is the diffusion of water molecules across a partially permeable membrane, from a dilute solution to a more concentrated solution. Animal cells can burst or shrink if placed in solutions that are too dilute or too concentrated. Plant cells become turgid when water enters by osmosis, helping to support the plant.
Active transport moves substances against the concentration gradient, from low to high concentration. This process requires energy from respiration. Mineral ions are absorbed by root hair cells using active transport, which allows plants to obtain nutrients even when soil concentrations are low.
4. Enzymes | 酶
Enzymes are biological catalysts that speed up chemical reactions without being used up. They are proteins with a specific active site. The lock-and-key model explains that each enzyme's active site is complementary in shape to its substrate. When the substrate fits into the active site, an enzyme-substrate complex forms, and products are released.
Enzyme activity is affected by temperature and pH. As temperature rises, activity increases until it reaches an optimum. Beyond this, the enzyme denatures: the active site loses its shape and can no longer bind the substrate. Each enzyme also has an optimum pH; extremes of pH cause denaturation.
5. Digestive System |
The digestive system breaks down large, insoluble food molecules into small, soluble ones that can be absorbed into the blood. Mechanical digestion begins in the mouth with chewing, while chemical digestion uses enzymes. Carbohydrases, proteases and lipases convert carbohydrates, proteins and lipids into smaller molecules.
Amylase is produced in the salivary glands and pancreas; it breaks down starch into maltose and other sugars. Proteases, such as pepsin in the stomach, digest proteins into amino acids. Lipases, with the help of bile, break down lipids into fatty acids and glycerol. Bile, produced by the liver and stored in the gall bladder, emulsifies fats to increase their surface area for lipase action and neutralises stomach acid.
Absorption of digested food occurs mainly in the small intestine. The inner walls are lined with millions of villi, which provide a large surface area, have a good blood supply, and possess thin walls to facilitate efficient diffusion and active transport.
6. Circulatory System |
The human circulatory system consists of the heart, blood vessels and blood. It is a double circulatory system: deoxygenated blood is pumped to the lungs (pulmonary circulation), and oxygenated blood is pumped to the rest of the body (systemic circulation). This separation ensures that oxygen-rich blood is delivered efficiently.
The heart is a muscular organ with four chambers: right atrium, right ventricle, left atrium and left ventricle. Valves prevent backflow of blood. The natural resting heart rate is controlled by a group of cells in the right atrium called the pacemaker. Arteries carry blood away from the heart under high pressure; veins return blood to the heart and have valves to prevent backflow; capillaries form extensive networks and allow exchange of substances at the tissues.
Blood is composed of red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets and plasma. Red blood cells contain haemoglobin which binds oxygen; white blood cells form part of the immune defence; platelets help blood clotting; plasma transports dissolved substances such as glucose, carbon dioxide and hormones.
7. Respiratory System |
The respiratory system supplies oxygen for aerobic respiration and removes the carbon dioxide produced. Air enters through the trachea, which splits into bronchi, then into bronchioles and finally reaches tiny air sacs called alveoli. The alveoli are surrounded by a dense capillary network.
Gas exchange occurs across the thin walls of the alveoli and capillaries. Oxygen diffuses from the alveolar air into the blood, while carbon dioxide diffuses from the blood into the alveolar air to be exhaled. Adaptations of the alveoli include a large surface area, moist and thin walls (one cell thick), and rich blood supply, all of which maximise the efficiency of diffusion.
8. Photosynthesis |
Photosynthesis is the process by which plants and algae produce glucose and oxygen from carbon dioxide and water, using light energy. It is an endothermic reaction, meaning it takes in energy from the surroundings. The glucose produced can be used immediately for respiration, stored as starch, converted to cellulose for cell walls, or combined with other nutrients to form amino acids and lipids.
6CO₂ + 6H₂O → C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂
The rate of photosynthesis is affected by light intensity, carbon dioxide concentration and temperature. At low light intensity, the rate is limited by light; once another factor becomes limiting, further increases in light have no effect. Farmers can use knowledge of these limiting factors to enhance crop growth in greenhouses.
Leaves are adapted for photosynthesis. They are broad and flat to capture light, thin to allow efficient diffusion of gases, and contain chloroplasts packed with chlorophyll, which absorbs light energy. Stomata on the lower epidermis let carbon dioxide diffuse in and oxygen diffuse out, while also regulating water loss.
9. Ecosystems and Food Chains |
An ecosystem is the interaction between a community of living organisms and their non-living (abiotic) environment. Organisms can be classified as producers (plants and algae, which make their own food), consumers (which eat other organisms) and decomposers (bacteria and fungi, which break down dead matter). A food chain shows the transfer of energy from one organism to another.
Energy is lost at each trophic level through respiration, heat and undigested material. Only about 10% of the energy is passed on to the next level. This is why food chains rarely have more than five trophic levels. Pyramids of biomass represent the total mass of living material at each level, almost always showing a pyramid shape.
Carbon is cycled through ecosystems. Carbon dioxide is absorbed by plants during photosynthesis. Carbon is then passed along food chains when consumers eat plants and other animals. Respiration by living organisms returns carbon dioxide to the atmosphere. Decomposers break down dead organisms and waste, releasing carbon dioxide back into the air. Combustion of fossil fuels also adds carbon dioxide to the atmosphere.
10. Inheritance | 遗传
The nucleus of a cell contains chromosomes made of DNA. A gene is a section of DNA that codes for a particular protein. Different versions of the same gene are called alleles. Alleles can be dominant or recessive. An organism's genotype is the combination of alleles it possesses, while its phenotype is the observable characteristics resulting from the genotype.
In a monohybrid cross, punnet squares can be used to predict the probability of offspring inheriting certain traits. For example, if both parents are heterozygous for a trait, there is a 25% chance of a homozygous recessive offspring. Family pedigrees allow us to track the inheritance of traits across generations.
Some disorders are inherited. Cystic fibrosis is caused by a recessive allele, meaning an individual must inherit two copies to develop the condition. Polydactyly (extra fingers or toes) is caused by a dominant allele. Understanding patterns of inheritance helps families make informed decisions and contributes to the development of genetic screening.
