📚 Year 10 WJEC Engineering: Key Terms Memory Guide | Year 10 WJEC

Mastering engineering terminology is half the battle in your WJEC Year 10 course. This guide groups essential terms by topic and pairs each with a memory trick, helping you lock in definitions without endless repetition.

1. Materials and Their Properties |

Ferrous metal – a metal containing iron, usually magnetic and prone to rust. Think of the Latin ferrum (iron). If a magnet sticks, it's likely ferrous.

联想拉丁文 ferrum(铁)。

Non-ferrous metal – a metal without iron, so it won' t easily and is often non-magnetic. Aluminium and copper are classic examples. Memory cue: 'non' = no iron.

Alloy – a mixture of two or more elements, at least one being a metal, designed to improve properties. Steel is iron + carbon; brass is copper + zinc. Picture an 'alloy' as a metals' 'alliance'.

Composite – best properties. Fibreglass (glass fibres + resin) and carbon fibre are composites. Think 'composite = combined strengths'.

Ductility – the ability to be drawn into a wire. Copper is highly ductile. Imagine 'duct' as in 'aqueduct' – a long, thin channel.
