Work through the sections in order if you are revising from scratch, or jump straight to the area you find hardest. Each section pairs the English terminology you will meet in exam questions with the Chinese explanation, so you can move between the two languages without losing the technical detail.
1. Elements of Music: The MAD T-SHIRT Framework | 音乐元素:MAD T-SHIRT 框架
The elements of music are the essential descriptors used to analyse any piece you encounter. The acronym MAD T-SHIRT is a useful memory tool: Melody, Articulation, Dynamics, Texture, Structure, Harmony, Instrumentation, Rhythm and Tempo. Each element interacts with the others to create the overall character of the music.
- M - Melody 旋律: the tune you can sing, shaped by pitch, contour and intervals.
- A - Articulation 演奏法: how notes are attacked and released (legato, staccato, accent).
- D - Dynamics 力度: the volume level and how it changes (pp to ff, crescendo).
- T - Texture 织体: how many layers sound at once and how they relate.
- S - Structure 结构: the large-scale plan of the piece (binary, ternary, rondo).
- H - Harmony 和声: chords, cadences, consonance and dissonance.
- I - Instrumentation 乐器编配: which instruments and voices are used, and why.
- R - Rhythm 节奏: the pattern of durations, note values and syncopation.
- T - Tempo 速度: the speed of the pulse (Adagio, Allegro, Presto).
No element works in isolation. A sudden change of dynamics in a quiet, thinly textured passage has a very different effect from the same change in a loud, dense one, and examiners reward answers that link two or three elements together rather than listing them separately.
Articulation + Dynamics + Texture + Structure + Harmony + Instrumentation + Rhythm + Tempo
2. Dynamics: From pp to ff | 力度:从 pp 到 ff
Dynamics range from very quiet (pp, pianissimo) to very loud (ff, fortissimo) and can change gradually (crescendo, diminuendo) or suddenly (subito). The exact sound level matters less than the contrast you can describe, so always link a dynamic marking to its musical effect.
| pp | pianissimo | very quiet 极弱 |
| p | piano | quiet 弱 |
| mp | mezzo-piano | moderately quiet 中弱 |
| mf | mezzo-forte | moderately loud 中强 |
| f | forte | loud 强 |
| ff | fortissimo | very loud 极强 |
| sfz / fp | sforzando / forte-piano | sudden accent then drop
Gradual changes are written as crescendo (getting louder) and diminuendo or decrescendo (getting quieter). A long crescendo over a repeated bass note is one of the most common ways composers build tension before a climax, especially in film music.
渐变力度写作 crescendo(渐强)与 diminuendo 或 decrescendo(渐弱)。
pp < p < mp < mf < f < ff
3. Articulation and Phrasing |
Articulation tells you how each note should be played: legato notes are smooth and connected, staccato notes are short and detached, and accents or sforzando marks push a note forward. On string instruments you may also meet pizzicato (plucked), arco (bowed) and con sordino (muted), while wind players use tonguing to shape attacks.
弦乐中还会遇到 pizzicato(拨奏)、arco(弓奏)和 con sordino(加弱音器),管乐演奏者则通过吐音(tonguing)来塑造起音。
A phrase is a musical sentence, usually two to eight bars long, that ends with a point of rest. Phrases are built from motifs: short, memorable ideas that can be repeated, sequenced (repeated a step higher or lower) or inverted (turned upside down).
- Accent / sforzando 重音 - a strong attack on one note 单音上的强调
- Slur 圆滑线 - notes played in one smooth gesture 一组音连贯演奏
In the listening exam, articulation questions are often worth easy marks because the answer is concrete: name the technique, then say what it does to the mood, such as detached staccato quavers creating a playful, nervous character.
4. Rhythm, Metre and Tempo |
Rhythm is the pattern of sounds and silences in time. In 4/4 the note values are easy to count: a semibreve lasts four beats, a minim two, a crotchet one, a quaver half a beat and a semiquaver a quarter of a beat. Dotted notes add half of the original value, and ties join two notes into one longer sound.
Metre is the organisation of beats into bars. 4/4 is simple quadruple time, 3/4 is simple triple (the waltz), 2/4 is simple duple (the march), and 6/8 is compound duple, where each beat divides into three. Syncopation shifts the accent onto a weak beat or off-beat and is a hallmark of jazz, reggae and much popular music.
| Adagio 慢板 | slow, at ease 缓慢从容 |
Dotted crotchet = 1½ beats | Triplet quavers = 1 crotchet | Anacrusis = upbeat before bar 1
5. Melody, Harmony and Tonality |
Melody is the tune, described by its shape (conjunct, moving by step, or disjunct, moving by leap), its range and its intervals. Tonality tells you the key: major generally sounds bright, minor darker, and pieces may be modal, pentatonic, chromatic or atonal. Modulation is a change of key, often to the dominant or relative minor.
Harmony is built from chords. The primary triads in a major key are I, IV and V, with vi as a very common extra. Cadences punctuate phrases and are a favourite exam question: perfect (V to I) sounds finished, imperfect (I to V) sounds unfinished, plagal (IV to I) has an amen feel, and interrupted (V to vi) surprises the listener.
- Sequence 模进 - a melodic idea repeated higher or lower 乐思移高或移低重复
- Drone / pedal 持续音 - a held bass note under changing harmony 低音保持而和声变化
- Dissonance 不协和 - clashing notes used for tension 冲突音造成张力
Perfect: V → I | Imperfect: I → V | Plagal: IV → I | Interrupted: V → vi
6. Texture and Instrumentation |
Texture describes how the musical layers are combined. Monophonic means one line only, homophonic means a melody with chordal accompaniment, and polyphonic or contrapuntal means two or more independent melodic lines woven together. Other useful labels include unison, octaves, melody and accompaniment, layered and antiph
