1. Semiotics: Signifier & Signified |
Sign = Signifier (physical form) + Signified (mental concept)
A sign consists of two inseparable parts: the signifier is the material form we perceive (a word, image, sound), and the signified is the idea or concept it triggers in our mind. In a perfume advert, a red rose (signifier) may signify romance (signified).
Denotation (explicit, literal) vs Connotation (implicit, cultural)
Denotation is the direct, dictionary meaning of a sign. Connotation is the set of cultural and emotional associations it carries. A skull denotes a human head bone; it connotes danger, mortality, or pirate life depending on context.
Myth (Barthes) = Second-order signification (connotation becomes naturalised denotation)
Roland Barthes describes myth as a chain of signification where a sign's connotations are so widely accepted that they appear natural and universal. A national flag waving in slow motion often turns patriotism into an unquestioned 'truth'.
2. Camera Shots: Framing and Field Size |
Framing = f(Distance, Lens) → ECU < CU < MS < LS < ELS
Shot size directly affects how much context and emotional intimacy a frame contains. The reverse relationship: as the shot widens, intimacy decreases and contextual information increases.
Extreme Close-Up (ECU): Focuses on a tiny detail, such as an eye or a gun trigger, conveying intense emotion or dramatic significance.
Close-Up (CU): Shows a person's face or a specific object, making the audience intimately aware of reactions and inner feelings.
Medium Shot (MS): Frames from the waist up, balancing a character's body language with some background context.
Long Shot (LS): Displays the full subject in its surroundings, establishing location and the character's relationship to the environment.
Extreme Long Shot (ELS): The subject appears tiny within a vast landscape, emphasising scale, solitude, or epic scope.
3. Camera Angles: Power Dynamics and Meaning |
High Angle → Subjects appear vulnerable, weak, or inferior
The camera looks down on the subject, diminishing its stature. Often used to show a character being overpowered or trapped.
Low Angle → Subjects appear powerful, dominant, or threatening
The camera looks up at the subject, making it loom large and imposing. Buildings and authority figures are frequently shot this way.
Eye Level: A neutral angle that positions the audience on equal terms with the subject, encouraging identification or realism.
Dutch Angle/Tilt: The camera is tilted to create a disorienting, uneasy effect, often signalling chaos or psychological instability.
4. Mise-en-Scène: The CLAMPS Framework | 场面调度:CLAMPS框架
Mise-en-Scène = CLAMPS (Costume, Lighting, Acting, Makeup, Props, Setting)
Mise-en-scène refers to everything placed before the camera and its arrangement. The CLAMPS mnemonic helps you remember all six controllable elements.
Costume: Clothing and accessories signal time period, social status, personality, and group identity. A lab coat suggests scientific authority.
Lighting: High-key lighting creates a bright, shadow-free look (used in comedies); low-key lighting with strong chiaroscuro produces suspense (film noir).
Acting/Actors: Facial expressions, gestures, and body language convey emotion and character motivation, shaping audience sympathy.
Makeup: Enhances, transforms, or conceals; special-effects makeup can create wounds, creatures, or ageing.
Props: Objects handled by actors (a detective's magnifying glass) anchor the scene in a particular genre or reveal character traits.
Setting: The physical location or built environment produces a sense of place, mood, and cultural context.
5. Editing: Pace, Continuity, and Transitions |
Pace ∝ Number of Cuts / Shot Duration; Continuity = Invisible Storytelling
Rapid cutting accelerates pace and raises tension (action sequences), while long takes slow pace and encourage contemplation. Continuity editing uses rules such as the 180° rule, shot/reverse shot, and match on action to keep screen direction and space coherent.
Cut: The instantaneous change from one shot to another; the most common transition.
Fade: A gradual transition to or from a black (or white) screen, often signalling the end of a sequence or passing of time.
Dissolve: One shot gradually fades into the next, overlapping the two images to suggest a connection or time shift.
Montage: A series of shots edited together to compress time, information, or create symbolic meaning (e.g. training sequence).
6. Sound: Diegetic and Non-Diegetic Layers |
Soundscape = Diegetic (in the story world) + Non-Diegetic (outside the story world)
Diegetic sound exists within the film's reality: characters can hear it (dialogue, slamming doors, radio). Non-diegetic sound is added for the audience's experience (background score, voiceover narration).
Sound Bridge: A sound from the next scene begins before the visual transition, or vice versa, smoothing narrative flow.
Ambient Sound: Background noises (wind, traffic, crowd chatter) that create a sense of realistic place.
Synchronous Sound: Sound matched to what is seen on screen (footsteps matching feet).
Asynchronous Sound: Sound that is not synchronised with the visual image, creating tension or disorientation.
Pleonastic Sound: Exaggerated sound, such as hammering heartbeats or a 'whoosh' effect, to heighten emotional impact.
7. Narrative: Todorov's Equilibrium Model |
Narrative = Equilibrium → Disruption → Recognition → Repair Attempt → New Equilibrium
Tzvetan Todorov argued that all stories begin with a state of balance (equilibrium), which is then broken by an event (disruption). The disruption is acknowledged, characters try to restore order, and a new, often transformed, equilibrium is established.
Stage 1: Equilibrium — a stable, happy, or ordinary situation (a family at breakfast).
Stage 2: Disruption — an outside force or event disturbs the peace (an alien invasion alert).
Stage 3: Recognition — characters realise the problem and its scope (the hero understands the threat).
Stage 4: Repair — the quest or struggle to overcome the disruption (battle against the aliens).
Stage 5: New Equilibrium — order is restored, but the world is changed; characters have grown (peace, but with a memorial).
8. Narrative: Propp's Character Functions |
Propp's 7 Spheres of Action: Hero, Villain, Princess, Donor, Helper, Dispatcher, False Hero
Vladimir Propp analysed fairy tales and identified seven recurring character types, or 'spheres of action', each with a specific narrative function. A single character can perform more than one function.
