One important point before we begin: techniques and criteria only work when they are built on real musical understanding. There is no shortcut that replaces regular listening, regular practice and regular composing. What this guide does is show you how to present that understanding in the form the examiner is marking.
1. Understanding the Exam Components |
Cambridge IGCSE Music (syllabus 0410 or 0978) is divided into three components: Listening, Performing and Composing. The Listening component is a written examination lasting approximately 1 hour 15 minutes and contributes 40% of the total mark. It tests your ability to identify musical features aurally, to comment on unfamiliar extracts from a range of traditions, and to analyse two set works. The Performing component (30%) requires a recording of one solo and one ensemble performance. The Composing component (30%) asks for two original compositions, each based on a different Area of Study or on a brief set by Cambridge. In Year 10 you are developing skills in all three areas at once. Each component is marked independently, and your final grade comes from the combined weighting, so consistent work across the year in performing and composing matters just as much as revision for the written paper.
| Composing 作曲 | 30% | Two original compositions 两首原创作品 | Control of elements, style, structure 音乐要素掌控、风格、结构 |
2. Areas of Study and the Set Works |
The listening paper draws on the Areas of Study set out in the syllabus, which normally cover Western classical traditions, music from around the world, and music of the 20th and 21st centuries. Within these areas, Cambridge names two set works for each exam series. These are studied in detail: you are expected to know their structure, instrumentation, harmony, melody, texture, tempo and context, not merely to recognise them. Set works change from series to series, so always check the current syllabus rather than relying on last year's notes.
For Composing, each of your two pieces should relate to a different Area of Study, or to a brief issued by Cambridge. This means your portfolio should demonstrate range: a piece written in a Western classical idiom and a piece influenced by another tradition, for example, show the examiner two different sets of skills. For Performing there is no Area of Study requirement, but examiners reward stylistic awareness, so choose repertoire that lets you show it.
3. Inside the Listening Paper: Structure and Question Types |
The listening paper normally works in two halves. Section A uses unfamiliar extracts: you hear music you have never studied and answer questions on what you can hear. Typical tasks include identifying instruments and instrumental families, naming cadences, recognising intervals and chords, describing texture and structure, and notating short rhythms or pitches. Section B turns to the set works, where the questions are longer and worth more marks, and where precise knowledge of the score and the context is expected. Some papers also include a comparison question that asks you to relate two extracts.
Two practical facts shape your technique. First, each extract is usually played a limited number of times, with a short pause before it is repeated, so you must read the question during the first hearing rather than after it. Second, the wording of the question tells you the type of answer required: a one-mark question needs a single word or short phrase, while a six-mark question needs six distinct musical points.
4. Command Words: What Each Question Really Wants |
Marks are lost every year because candidates misread the command word. 'Identify' or 'name' wants a term and nothing more. 'Describe' wants you to say what you hear, without reasons. 'Explain' wants a musical reason, usually signalled by the word 'because'. 'Compare' wants both extracts discussed, with similarities and differences made explicit. 'Comment on' wants a judgement supported by musical evidence. 'Analyse' wants the music broken down element by element.
Identify"(识别)或 "name"(说出名称)只需要一个术语,多的不要写。" Explain"(解释)要求给出音乐上的原因,通常要用 "because" 引出。" Comment on"(评论)要求作出判断,并用音乐证据支持。"
Describe 描述: what you hear, no reasons 只写听到的内容,不写理由。
Explain 解释: feature + reason, link with 'because' 特征加理由,用 because 连接。
Compare 比较: both extracts, both similarities and differences 两个片段、相同与不同都要写。
Comment on 评论: a judgement plus evidence 判断加证据。
A simple safeguard is to underline the command word and the number of marks before you write anything. The number of marks is effectively a checklist: four marks means four separate, creditworthy points, each of which should ideally contain a musical term.
5. Aural Skills: How to Train Your Ear in Year 10 | 听觉技能:Year 10 如何训练耳朵
Aural ability is not a talent you either have or lack; it is a trainable skill, and Year 10 is the ideal time to train it because you still have more than a year before the final paper. The most effective routine combines short, frequent sessions with a written listening log. Twenty minutes a day beats three hours on a Sunday.
Interval and chord drills 音程与和弦练习: sing up and down from a given note, then name intervals you hear in real music 从给定音向上、向下唱,然后在真实音乐中辨认音程。
Rhythmic dictation 节奏听写: clap back a two-bar pattern, then write it with correct note values 拍回两小节的节奏型,再用正确的音符时值写下来。
Melodic dictation 旋律听写: start with three notes, then build to four bars in a known key 从三个音开始,逐步扩展到已知调性中的四小节。
Instrument and timbre spotting 乐器与音色辨认: including world instruments and their families 包括世界乐器及其所属乐器组。
Terminology in Italian 意大利语术语: tempo and dynamic terms should be automatic, not guessed 速度与力度术语要脱口而出,而不是靠猜。
Use past papers from your own board as the core of your practice, and supplement them with any good-quality recording. When you listen for pleasure, listen actively once a day: name the texture, guess the era, count the bars in the introduction. That habit alone can lift a grade.
6. Performing: What the Marking Criteria Reward |
The Performing component is assessed by your teacher and moderated externally, so the criteria reward what a listener can actually hear in the recording. Three strands dominate: technical control, expression and interpretation, and ensemble awareness where relevant. Technical control covers accuracy of notes, pitch and rhythm, fluency, stability of tempo, and the physical control of your instrument or voice, including breath support, bowing, fingering and pedalling. Expression covers dynamics, phrasing, articulation, rubato and stylistic understanding. Ensemble covers balance, blend, tuning, entries, and the ability to stay together and respond to other players.
Practical advice follows directly from the criteria. Choose repertoire you can perform accurately rather than repertoire that merely looks impressive: under the criteria, accuracy and control usually outscore ambition. Record several takes well before the deadline, in a quiet room, with a clear acoustic and a sensible microphone position. Where an ensemble is required, play with live performers rather than a backing track, and make sure every part is clearly audible. Finally, check that your scores and any programme notes are submitted correctly; missing paperwork can cost marks that your playing has already earned.
7. Composing: What the Marking Criteria Reward |
The Composing criteria focus on how well you control musical elements within a chosen style. Examiners look for a clear sense of structure, coherent and developed melodic ideas, harmony that suits the idiom, effective use of texture and timbre, and imaginative handling of rhythm and dynamics. Originality is rewarded, but so is idiomatic writing: a blues that does not swing, or a Baroque-style piece without a clear cadential shape, will lose marks however inventive it is. Notation accuracy also matters, because the score and the recording must agree.
The most reliable way to gain marks is development. Take a short motif and transform it: sequence it, invert it, augment or diminish it, change its metre, place it over a different harmony. A piece built from one or two ideas that are genuinely developed will almost always outscore a piece that strings together many unrelated ideas. Plan before you write: sketch a structure, decide the key scheme and the cadence points, then compose. Keep your drafts, because they show your working and help your teacher support you. Submit a score and a recording of every composition, check the required duration, and write for instruments and voices you genuinely understand.
