1. The Seven Elements of Music |

Music is built from seven core elements, often remembered by the acronym DR SMITH: Dynamics, Rhythm, Structure, Melody, Instrumentation/Timbre, Texture, and Harmony. These elements provide a framework for describing and analysing any piece of music you hear.

Melody is the tune — a sequence of notes that is memorable and singable. It moves by step (conjunct) or by leap (disjunct), and has characteristics such as range, contour, and phrasing.

Rhythm refers to the pattern of long and short sounds and silences over a steady beat. It can include syncopation, dotted notes, and triplets to create variety and drive.

Harmony arises when two or more notes are played simultaneously. It includes chords, chord progressions, and cadences that give a sense of direction and resolution.

Structure is the overall plan of a piece, such as binary (AB), ternary (ABA), rondo (ABACA), or theme and variations. Recognising structure helps you follow the composer's design.

Texture describes how many layers of sound are heard and how they relate. It can be monophonic, homophonic, polyphonic, or heterophonic.

Dynamics indicate the volume of the music, ranging from very soft (pp) to very loud (ff). Gradual changes are marked as crescendo or diminuendo.

Timbre / Instrumentation describes the unique tone colour of different instruments or voices and how they are combined. The choice of instruments heavily influences the mood and character of a piece.

2. Pulse, Tempo and Rhythm |

Pulse is the steady beat that underlies most music. The grouping of beats into regular patterns is called metre, indicated by a time signature such as 2/4, 3/4, 4/4 (simple) or 6/8, 9/8, 12/8 (compound).

Tempo is the speed of the music, usually given by Italian terms:

LargoVery slow and broad
AdagioSlow and stately
AndanteAt a walking pace
ModeratoModerate speed中板
AllegroFast and lively快板
PrestoVery fast

Rhythmic features include note values (semibreve, minim, crotchet, quaver, semiquaver), rests, dotted rhythms, ties, and syncopation, where accents fall on weak beats or off-beats. Common rhythmic devices such as anacrusis (upbeat) and hemiola (two-against-three feel) also appear frequently.

3. Pitch, Melody and Intervals |

Pitch refers to how high or low a note sounds. Melodies are built from scales – the most common in Western music are major (happy, bright) and minor (sad, sombre). Other scales include chromatic (all semitones), pentatonic (five notes, common in folk music), and whole-tone scales.

An interval measures the distance between two notes, counted in number (2nd, 3rd, 4th, etc.) and quality (perfect, major, minor, augmented, diminished). A perfect 5th sounds hollow and stable, a major 3rd sounds bright, while a minor 2nd sounds tense and dissonant.

Melodic shape includes ascending, descending, arch, wave, or static contours. Conjunct motion moves by step; disjunct motion uses leaps. Ornaments such as trills, mordents, turns, and appoggiaturas add expressive detail to a melody.

4. Harmony and Tonality |

Tonality refers to the sense of a 'home' key. Pieces can be in a major key, a minor key, modal (using ancient church modes), atonal (no key centre), or bitonal (two keys at once).

Chords are built by stacking thirds. Triads (three-note chords) are the foundation of tonal harmony and can be major, minor, diminished, or augmented. A seventh chord adds another third on top. Chords can be played in root position or inversions (first inversion uses the 3rd in the bass; second inversion uses the 5th).

Chord progressions create movement and tension. The most common progression in classical and popular music is I–IV–V–I. Cadences are the two-chord endings of phrases:

Modulation changes key within a piece. Common modulations go to the dominant (e.g. C major to G major) or the relative minor (C major to A minor).

5. Texture | 织体

Texture describes how the melodic, rhythmic, and harmonic layers are combined.

Changes in texture can add contrast, excitement, or calm within a piece.

6. Structure and Form |

Structure is the architectural layout of a composition. Common forms include:

Binary (AB)Two contrasting sections, often each repeated
Ternary (ABA)A section, contrasting B section, return of A三段体 – A段,对比B段,再现A段
Rondo (ABACA)Recurring main theme (A) alternating with episodes回旋曲 – 主部(A)反复,与插部交替
Theme and VariationsA theme is presented then altered in successive variations
Sonata FormExposition (two contrasting themes), Development, Recapitulation
StrophicSame music for each verse (common in songs)
Through-composedNo large repeated sections; continuous new music

Understanding form helps listeners follow the journey of the music and identify key moments of contrast and return.

7. Dynamics and Articulation |

Dynamics add expression and shape to music. The main Italian terms are:
