Sociology rewards students who read widely and think critically. The summer is the perfect time to move beyond common sense, learn the vocabulary of the discipline, and begin asking the questions that sociologists ask about family, education, crime, and inequality.
1. Why Study Sociology? |
Sociology is the scientific study of society, social relationships and social institutions. It investigates how our individual biographies are shaped by historical and structural forces. Far from being common sense, sociology questions everyday assumptions and demands evidence before it explains social patterns.
The American sociologist C. Wright Mills called this the "sociological imagination": the ability to see the connection between "personal troubles" and "public issues". For example, one person losing a job is a private problem; two million people losing jobs in a recession is a structural pattern.
Studying sociology enhances critical thinking, empathy and an awareness of diversity. It equips you to analyse contemporary issues such as poverty, gender inequality, racism and globalisation. These analytical skills are highly prized in law, journalism, social work, teaching, marketing and public policy.
2. Core Sociological Perspectives |
Sociologists use different theoretical "lenses" to interpret social life. The three main perspectives are functionalism, conflict theory and interpretivism. Understanding these will help you evaluate the strengths and limitations of competing explanations rather than simply describing them.
| Perspective | Core Ideas |
|---|---|---|
| Functionalism | Society is a stable system of interrelated parts. Each institution (family, school, government) performs functions that maintain social order and shared values. Key thinkers: Durkheim, Parsons, Merton. |
| Conflict Theory (Marxism & Feminism) | Society is characterised by inequality and competing interests. Institutions benefit powerful groups. Marxists focus on class; feminists focus on patriarchy and gender. Key thinkers: Marx, Engels, Oakley, Walby. |
| Interpretivism (Interactionism) | Society is created through everyday interaction and the meanings people give to their actions. Focus on small-scale, "micro" settings such as classrooms and street corners. Key thinkers: Weber, Mead, Becker, Goffman. |
Strong answers do not just label a perspective; they use it to explain evidence and then criticise it. For instance, functionalism explains why schools teach shared values, but it struggles to explain why working-class pupils systematically underachieve.
3. Key Concepts: Structure, Culture and Identity |
Sociology distinguishes between social structure (the patterned arrangements of institutions, roles and inequalities) and agency (the capacity of individuals to act and make choices). Most sociological debate concerns how much of our behaviour is shaped by structure and how much by agency.
You must also master the basic vocabulary: norms (shared expectations of behaviour), values (beliefs about what is desirable), roles (the parts we play, such as student or sibling), and status (our social position, which may be ascribed at birth or achieved through effort).
Culture refers to the whole way of life of a group, including language, customs, dress and beliefs. Sociologists also study subcultures, cultural diversity, ethnocentrism (judging others by your own culture's standards) and cultural relativism (understanding a culture on its own terms).
4. Socialisation, Culture and Identity |
Socialisation is the lifelong process through which we learn the culture of our society. Primary socialisation happens in early childhood, mainly within the family; secondary socialisation occurs later through school, peers, religion, the workplace and the mass media.
Sociologists describe these influences as agencies of socialisation. Each agency may transmit different, even conflicting, messages: a family may value academic effort while a peer group values rebellion, and the media may present ideals of appearance that contradict both.
The nature versus nurture debate asks whether our identity is determined by biology or by social learning. Sociologists generally stress nurture, while accepting that both interact. Gender identity, for example, is learned through canalisation, manipulation, verbal appellation and different activities for boys and girls.
Class, ethnicity, age and sexuality also shape identity. Sociologists are interested in how individuals negotiate multiple identities, and in whether globalisation is producing a more uniform global culture or stronger local and hybrid identities.
5. Research Methods and Evidence |
Sociology is an empirical discipline: claims must be supported by evidence. The main methods include questionnaires, structured and unstructured interviews, participant and non-participant observation, longitudinal studies, case studies and analysis of official statistics and documents.
Methods are usually divided into quantitative (numerical, large-scale, seeking patterns) and qualitative (word-based, small-scale, seeking meaning). Positivists prefer quantitative methods because they aim for reliability and generalisation; interpretivists prefer qualitative methods because they seek validity and verstehen (empathetic understanding).
Key technical terms include sampling frame, representative sample, random and snowball sampling, response rate, validity (does it measure what it claims?), reliability (would it give the same result again?) and triangulation (using more than one method).
Ethical issues matter too: informed consent, confidentiality, anonymity, and avoiding harm to participants. Finally, remember the golden rule of interpretation: correlation does not prove causation, and statistics are socially produced, not neutral facts.
6. Family and Households |
The family is the most basic institution in sociology. You need to distinguish family types: nuclear, extended, lone-parent, reconstituted (step) and same-sex families; and household forms, including one-person households and shared living arrangements.
Functionalists such as Murdock and Parsons argue that the family performs essential functions: reproduction, primary socialisation, economic support and emotional security. Parsons distinguished the primary socialisation role of the family from the secondary role of schools.
The conflict perspective criticises this view. Marxists argue that the family reproduces class inequality and the labour force; feminists such as Oakley and Delphy argue that the family benefits men through unpaid domestic labour and the "dual burden".
Family life has changed markedly: rising divorce and cohabitation, later marriage, falling birth rates, more women in paid work and greater acceptance of diverse family forms. Whether this represents the "decline of the family" or simply family diversity is a classic exam debate.
7. Education and Schooling |
Education is both a formal institution and a site of sociological struggle. You should be able to distinguish the formal curriculum from the hidden curriculum (the unofficial lessons about punctuality, obedience and hierarchy that pupils learn at school).
Functionalists see education as performing positive functions: transmitting knowledge and skills, promoting social solidarity, and allocating people to roles through meritocratic selection. Parsons described the school as a bridge between the particularistic values of the family and the universalistic values of wider society.
Conflict theorists disagree. Marxists argue that education reproduces class inequality through the correspondence principle. Interactionists focus on labelling and self-fulfilling prophecy; Bourdieu emphasised cultural capital and habitus, while Willis showed how "lads" formed an anti-school subculture.
Other key topics include streaming and setting, pupil subcultures, gendered subject choice, ethnicity and achievement, private versus state schooling, and the impact of marketisation policies on parental choice.
8. Crime, Deviance and Social Control |
Deviance refers to behaviour that breaks a social norm; crime refers to behaviour that breaks the law. Since norms and laws vary across time and place, sociologists argue that deviance is socially defined rather than naturally given.
Social control may be formal (police, courts, prisons) or informal (family disapproval, peer pressure, shame). Functionalists argue that some deviance is functional: it clarifies boundaries and can drive social change. Merton's strain theory explains deviance as a response to the gap between cultural goals and legitimate means.
Interactionists offer labelling theory: Becker argued that deviance is created by the reaction of others, and that a label can produce a deviant career through a self-fulfilling prophecy. Marxists link crime to capitalism, arguing that the law protects property and that white-collar and corporate crime are under-policed.
Always evaluate crime statistics. Official figures reflect reporting and recording practices rather than the true volume of crime; the dark figure of unreported crime, victim surveys and self-report studies are essential tools for criticism.
9. Social Stratification and Inequality |
Social stratification describes the division of society into hierarchical layers ranked by class, status, power, gender, ethnicity or age. Closed systems (such as caste and slavery) allow little movement; open systems (such as modern class societies) allow some social mobility.
Sociologists distinguish vertical mobility (moving up or down the hierarchy), horizontal mobility (changing occupation at a similar level), intergenerational mobility (compared with your parents) and intragenerational mobility (across your own lifetime).
Inequality is measured through income and wealth distribution, poverty lines, unemployment rates and indices such as the Gini coefficient, which runs from 0 (perfect equality) to 1 (perfect inequality). Absolute poverty means lacking basic necessities; relative poverty means falling below the average standard of living in a society.
Theoretical positions differ sharply. Marx saw class as rooted in ownership of the means of production; Weber added status and party to class; functionalists such as Davis and Moore argued that inequality motivates people to fill important roles; feminists emphasise patriarchal structures that disadvantage women economically.
You should also be able to discuss whether modern Britain (or your own society) has become a meritocracy, and to use evidence on social class, gender and ethnicity to evaluate claims about equal opportunity.
10. Media, Globalisation and Social Change |
The mass media are a central agency of socialisation and a powerful source of social control. Sociologists study how media transmit information and entertainment, shape political opinion, and construct representations of social groups.
Media representations often rely on stereotypes of class, gender, ethnicity, age and disability. Pluralist theories argue that audiences choose freely among diverse media, while Marxist and feminist theories emphasise ownership concentration, agenda-setting and ideological control.
Globalisation refers to the growing interconnectedness of societies through trade, migration, communication technologies and cultural exchange. Debates focus on whether globalisation spreads cultural imperialism or produces hybrid, glocal cultures, and on its effects on identity, inequality and social change.
Digital media have transformed this field: social media platforms can mobilise protest movements, but they also raise concerns about misinformation, echo chambers, surveillance and unequal digital access.
11. Exam Skills and Assessment Objectives |
IGCSE Sociology rewards precision. Know the assessment objectives: AO1 knowledge and understanding, AO2 application of concepts and theories to evidence, and AO3 analysis and evaluation. Every long answer should demonstrate all three.
Pay close attention to command words: "identify" and "describe" need brief accurate statements; "explain" requires causal reasoning; "discuss", "evaluate" and "to what extent" require balanced argument and a justified conclusion.
Use a reliable structure for extended answers. A useful pattern is PEEL: Point, Evidence, Explanation, Link. Support points with theorists, studies or statistics, then criticise them. Define key terms in the first line to secure AO1 marks quickly.
A high-quality evaluation might look like this: functionalism explains X well because...; however, Marxists would argue...; the interpretivist approach adds...; overall, the evidence suggests... This gives a clear, defensible judgement rather than simply listing perspectives.
12. Your Summer Bridging Plan |
A realistic eight-week plan will give you a genuine head start. Aim for two or three short sessions per week rather than one long cramming session, and always make notes in your own words.
| Week | Focus |
|---|---|---|
| 1-2 | Learn the three perspectives and key concepts; make a glossary of 30 terms. | |
| 3-4 | Read the family and education chapters; practise PEEL paragraphs. |
| 5-6 | Study crime and stratification; learn two studies per topic. | |
| 7-8 | Cover research methods and media; write one timed 12-mark answer. | |
Practical habits matter as much as content. Read one news article a week and analyse it sociologically, annotate your notes with theorists' names, and keep a running list of examples you can use as evidence in exams.
Finally, do not try to memorise everything before term begins. The goal of this bridging course is to arrive with the vocabulary, curiosity and confidence to engage in discussion - the deeper understanding will come through your lessons, your reading and your own questioning.
Ask questions → Find evidence → Evaluate theories → Write with precision
