📚 Year 10 CIE Sociology: Theory & Concept Quick Reference Handbook |
Sociology may not contain mathematical proofs or chemical equations, but it is built upon powerful theoretical frameworks that act like ‘theorems’ – general statements tested and refined through research. This handbook presents core sociological perspectives, key concepts and research principles as compact ‘formulas’, helping you remember how different parts of the social world fit together and influence one another. Use these models as quick mental shortcuts when analysing any topic in your CIE IGCSE course.
1. Functionalism Theorem |
Society can be compared to a living organism. Just as the heart, lungs and brain each perform functions to keep the body alive, social institutions such as the family, education system and religion work together to maintain social stability. The functionalist 'formula' for order is: Social Order = Value Consensus + Socialisation + Social Control. Value consensus means most members of society agree on basic norms and values. Socialisation transmits these shared values from one generation to the next, while social control mechanisms (rewards and punishments) ensure conformity.
When one institution fails, social problems arise – this is the idea of dysfunction. For functionalists, rapid change is dangerous because it can disrupt the smooth equilibrium. Think of the organic analogy: if the heart weakens, other organs must work harder; if the family fails to properly socialise children, schools and the legal system face extra strain. The theory applies to all areas of the syllabus: the family serves essential functions, education allocates roles based on merit, and crime occurs when socialisation is inadequate.
2. Marxism Theorem |
Marxism provides a conflict-based alternative. Instead of harmony, it sees society as divided between two main classes: the bourgeoisie (capitalist class who own the means of production) and the proletariat (working class who sell their labour). The central theorem states: Economic Base → Determines → Superstructure. The economic base (ownership, profit, relations of production) shapes the superstructure – all other institutions, including the family, education, law and mass media. In a capitalist society, these institutions reflect ruling-class interests and maintain false class consciousness.
Apply the theorem to education: the hidden curriculum teaches pupils to accept hierarchy, punctuality and obedience – qualities needed by exploitative employers. The family reproduces labour power and provides emotional comfort to workers, making them ready to return to work on Monday. Religion promises rewards in heaven, distracting the poor from demanding change on earth. Inequality, unemployment and poverty are not accidents but necessary features of the system, according to Marxists. Social change will only occur when the proletariat develops class consciousness and overthrows capitalism.
3. Feminism Theorem |
Feminist sociology draws attention to gender as a primary division in society. While there are several strands of feminism, all highlight the existence of patriarchy – a system of male dominance. The fundamental feminist theorem can be expressed as: Patriarchy + Gendered Socialisation → Gender Inequality. From childhood, boys and girls are taught different norms through canalisation, verbal appellations and manipulation of toys and activities. These processes shape identities and channel males and females into unequal roles in the family, education and the workplace.
Liberal feminists focus on equal opportunities and legislation, arguing that gender inequality can be reduced within the existing structure. Radical feminists see patriarchy as the oldest and most entrenched oppression, rooted in women’s reproductive role and the threat of male violence. Marxist feminists link gender inequality to capitalism, noting that women’s unpaid domestic labour benefits the system. Each perspective offers a different ‘variation’ of the basic formula, but all agree that gender roles are socially constructed, not biologically fixed.
4. Interactionism & Labelling Theorem |
While macro theories focus on large-scale structures, interactionism studies face-to-face encounters and the meanings people attach to actions. The key theorem is: Meaning + Interaction → Social Construction of Reality. People do not simply react to objective situations; they interpret and define them. For example, a raised hand means something different in a classroom, a bidding room and a stop sign – the meaning is negotiated through interaction. In education, the labelling theorem states that teachers attach labels to students (bright, troublemaker, hardworking) and these labels become part of the student’s self-concept, producing a self-fulfilling prophecy.
Deviance, therefore, is not an inherent quality of an act but a label applied by those with power to define rules. Becker called this the ‘outsiders’ theorem: deviance is behaviour that people so label. A teenager who steals from a shop may be labelled ‘criminal’, which then limits their legitimate opportunities and pushes them further into criminal networks. Interactionism reminds us that statistics, such as crime rates and exam scores, are not straightforward facts but products of social processes of definition and measurement.
5. Socialisation Formula |
All sociological theories agree that individuals are shaped by socialisation, though they disagree on its purpose. Socialisation is the lifelong process of learning the culture of a society. The basic formula is: Socialisation = Primary Agencies + Secondary Agencies. Primary socialisation occurs in the family during early childhood, where language, basic norms and emotional patterns are acquired. Secondary socialisation takes place through education, peer groups, the mass media, religion and the workplace, continuing throughout life.
Agents of socialisation work like transmitters and amplifiers. The family transmits values such as honesty and gender roles. Schools transmit the formal curriculum and the hidden curriculum. Peer groups amplify the desire for acceptance and can reinforce or undermine the other agents. Mass media, especially social media today, transmit powerful images of what is ‘normal’, ‘successful’ and ‘desirable’. Sociologists use the formula to trace how different agencies compete or complement each other in shaping behaviour.
6. Culture Theorem |
Culture is the ‘glue’ that holds society together and the lens through which members view the world. Sociologists define culture as the whole way of life of a society. The theorem can be written as: Culture = Norms + Values + Language + Material Artefacts. Norms are specific rules of behaviour (e.g. queuing, saying ‘please’). Values are broader principles guiding what is considered good or bad (e.g. freedom, achievement). Language is a system of symbols allowing communication and thought. Material artefacts include clothing, food, technology and architecture that reflect a society’s values.
Cultural diversity exists within any large society. Subcultures are groups that share many mainstream values but have distinctive norms (e.g. teenagers, occupational groups). Folk cultures are small-scale, traditional and relatively isolated, while mass culture is produced for a large, undifferentiated audience. Understanding the culture theorem is essential for discussing topics like globalisation, as the tension between local folk cultures and global mass culture shapes identities and lifestyles worldwide.
7. Research Method Formula: Reliability & Validity |
When designing or evaluating sociological research, two concepts function like benchmarks. Think of them as a pair of equations: Reliability = Consistency of Results and Validity = Truthfulness of Data. A reliable method, such as a well-structured questionnaire, yields the same results when repeated under the same conditions. A valid method, such as in-depth unstructured interviews, captures authentic feelings and meanings. However, there is often a trade-off: highly reliable methods can be less valid, and deeply valid methods can be less reliable.
For example, official statistics on crime are produced by the police and are highly reliable because they follow fixed counting rules. Yet they may lack validity because many crimes go unreported or are not recorded. Participant observation, on the other hand, may reveal the authentic world of a gang, but if another researcher repeated the study, different relationships and insights might emerge. CIE exam questions frequently ask you to discuss reliability and validity in relation to specific methods – so always apply the two equations.
8. Research Method Formula: Representativeness & Sampling |
A study’s value also depends on how well its findings can be generalised. The representativeness formula is: Representativeness ∝ (Sample Reflects Target Population). A sample is a smaller group selected from a larger population. If the sample shares the key characteristics of the population (age, gender, class, ethnicity) in the same proportions, the study can claim representativeness. Without representativeness, we cannot generalise safely from the sample to the whole population.
Sampling methods are the tools to achieve representativeness. Random sampling gives every member an equal chance, reducing bias. Stratified sampling divides the population into categories (strata) and selects randomly from each, ensuring key subgroups are included. Quota sampling fills a set number from each category but is not random, which weakens representativeness. Snowball sampling is used for hidden populations but rarely produces a representative sample. In the exam, you must be able to justify why a researcher might choose a less representative method, perhaps because validity or practical constraints are more important.
9. Family Function & Conflict Theorem |
The family is a core institution, and competing theories offer rival ‘formulas’ for its role. The functionalist theorem: Family = Primary Socialisation + Stabilisation of Adult Personalities. Parsons argued that the nuclear family specialises in these two irreducible functions. Primary socialisation equips children with shared norms, while the emotional warmth of family life relieves the stresses of the competitive workplace (the ‘warm bath’ theory).
The Marxist and feminist formulas challenge this rosy picture. Marxism declares: Family = Reproduction of Labour Power + Inheritance of Private Property. The family produces the next generation of workers and allows the bourgeoisie to pass down wealth, maintaining class inequality. Feminists add: Family = Site of Patriarchy + Unequal Division of Labour. Women still perform the bulk of housework and childcare even when in paid employment, a phenomenon known as the dual burden or triple shift. When an exam question asks you to evaluate the role of the family, setting these formulas beside each other helps you build a balanced answer.
10. Education Attainment Theorem |
Why do some social groups consistently outperform others? Sociologists explain differential educational achievement through a combination of factors that can be expressed as a theorem: Attainment = Material Factors + Cultural Factors + School Processes. Material factors include income, housing quality, private tutoring and access to resources such as computers and books. Children from wealthier homes live in less overcrowded conditions, can afford healthier diets and have the space to study quietly – all directly affecting concentration and performance.
Cultural factors refer to differences in values, language and parental attitudes. Bernstein identified elaborated and restricted speech codes, arguing that middle-class children use a code more valued by schools. Cultural capital (knowledge, tastes, confidence) gives middle-class students an edge. School processes then mediate these external factors: labelling by teachers, streaming into ability groups and the self-fulfilling prophecy can amplify initial advantages or disadvantages. Internal assessment questions often expect you to weigh the relative importance of these three groups of factors, so the theorem serves as a useful checklist.
11. Crime & Deviance Theorem |
Sociologists are less interested in whether an act is ‘wrong’ and more in why some acts come to be defined as deviant. The interactionist labelling theorem is key here, but we can also summarise the main explanatory formulas: Crime = Strain + Inadequate Socialisation + Opportunity Structure. Merton’s strain theory argues that society sets culturally approved goals (e.g. wealth) but does not provide equal legitimate means to achieve them. When legitimate pathways are blocked, individuals adapt through innovation (crime), ritualism, retreatism or rebellion.
Subcultural theories build on this, showing that working-class boys, denied educational success, form delinquent subcultures where status is earned through toughness and rule-breaking. Right realists lean towards inadequate socialisation and rational choice, suggesting crime occurs when the costs of punishment are perceived as low. Left realists emphasise relative deprivation and marginalisation. For a full-mark answer, combine the formula with specific examples and evaluate each explanation’s limitations.
12. Media Effects Theorem |
The mass media is an agent of socialisation, an agenda-setter and, for some theorists, a powerful shaper of behaviour. A helpful summary theorem is: Media Influence = Content + Audience Reception + Context diate effects, such as copycat violence. This model resembles a simple one-way formula: media message → audience response.
r → followers. The uses and gratifications approach turns the equation around, asking what audiences do with media rather than what media do to audiences. Cultural effects theories argue that media influence is gradual and long-term, normalising particular worldviews. When discussing any media-related item, apply the theorem to argue that effects depend on how individuals interpret content within their own social contexts.
