📚 Essay Writing Framework & Model Answers for IGCSE Business | IGCSE
In Cambridge IGCSE Business Studies, essay-style questions carry significant weight, especially in Paper 2. These questions demand more than simple recall; they require you to apply knowledge, analyse situations, and make justified evaluations. A clear writing framework can transform a mediocre answer into a top-band response. This guide walks you through the essential structures, command words, paragraph models, and full model answers that help you reach the highest band.
1. Understanding Essay Questions in IGCSE Business | 理解IGCSE商务的论文题目
IGCSE Business essay questions are typically found in Paper 2 and often begin with a short case study or scenario. The question then asks you to discuss, evaluate, or recommend a course of action based on the given information. Unlike data-response questions, essays require extended writing in which you demonstrate the full range of skills: knowledge, application, analysis and evaluation.
The Paper 2 structure is highly predictable, and that predictability is your best friend. Each of the four questions is worth 20 marks and is broken into graded parts, usually 2, 4, 6 and 8 marks. The 2-mark part tests definition or identification, the 4-mark part tests explanation, the 6-mark part tests analysis, and the 8-mark part tests evaluation. If you know which skill each part actually rewards, you will never write in the wrong direction again.
Every paper is built around a business context: a sole trader, a partnership, a private limited company or a public limited company, operating in the primary, secondary or tertiary sector. Your answer must stay inside that context. A brilliant generic answer about "businesses in general" scores lower than a plain answer about "this particular business".
Finally, remember that the scenario itself is a source of marks. Figures such as revenue, costs, number of employees, market share, price and capacity are placed there deliberately. Examiners reward candidates who quote and interpret them, not candidates who ignore them.
2. The Command Words Decoded |
Understanding command words is critical. Each term signals the depth and style of response expected. A 2-mark "identify" and an 8-mark "evaluate" are completely different tasks, even if they refer to the same business situation.
| Command word | What it demands | Typical marks |
|---|---|---|
| State / Identify / Outline | Brief factual points or a definition; no development needed. | 2 |
| Explain | Give a reason and develop it in one or two steps. | 4 |
| Analyse | Build a chain of cause and effect that reaches a business consequence. | 6 |
| Discuss | Present both advantages and disadvantages, or arguments for and against, then reach a conclusion. | 8 |
| Evaluate / Assess | Weigh up evidence and make a supported judgement about importance or impact. | 8 |
| Justify | Give reasons for a choice and defend it against the alternatives. | 8 |
| Recommend | Choose a course of action and say why it fits this business and this situation. | 8 |
| To what extent | Argue both sides, then state how far you agree and under what conditions. | 8 |
Discuss: Present both advantages and disadvantages, or arguments for and against, and reach a conclusion. Do not just list points; weigh them up.
Analyse: Follow the consequences through. For example, " s → higher costs → lower profit margin → less retained profit → less finance for expansion". Stopping after the first arrow is explanation, not analysis.
Evaluate: Make a judgement and support it with reasons and evidence. The judgement must be decided by the context, not by personal opinion. Say which factor matters most and why, and mention the conditions that could change your answer.
Justify and Recommend: These require you to select one option and defend it. A common trap is to describe all the options and never actually choose. Examiners cannot award evaluation marks for a choice you never made.
3. Assessment Objectives and Mark Bands |
Cambridge IGCSE Business assesses four assessment objectives. Knowing them tells you exactly what the examiner is ticking off as they read your script.
- AO1 Knowledge and understanding: correct use of business terms, concepts and theories.
- AO2 Application: linking that knowledge to the specific business in the case study.
- AO3 Analysis: using concepts to explain causes, consequences and relationships.
- AO4 Evaluation: making judgements, drawing conclusions and assessing importance.
For an 8-mark question, the levels of response are typically as follows: Level 1 (1-2 marks) offers limited knowledge with no application; Level 2 (3-4 marks) applies knowledge but offers limited analysis or simply lists points; Level 3 (5-6 marks) analyses both sides but the judgement is weak or missing; Level 4 (7-8 marks) provides well-developed analysis of both sides plus a justified, contextual conclusion.
The single most common reason candidates sit in Level 3 is a missing or generic conclusion. Writing "so it is a good idea" earns nothing. Writing "so, given that the shop is located on a quiet side street with low footfall, moving online is likely to be the better option in the long run, provided the owner can fund the initial set-up cost" moves you straight into Level 4.
4. The Core Essay Framework: KAAE | 核心论文框架:KAAE
The simplest reliable framework for any extended answer is KAAE: Knowledge, Application, Analysis, Evaluation. It mirrors the assessment objectives and works for every 6-mark and 8-mark question in the paper.
Knowledge + Application + Analysis + Evaluation = Top Band
Knowledge (K): state the concept accurately, using the correct terminology - for example, "break-even", "cash flow", "economies of scale", "price elasticity of demand". One precise term is worth more than three vague ones.
Application (A): anchor the concept to the case. Instead of "businesses have fixed costs", write "the bakery's monthly rent of $2,000 is a fixed cost that must be paid even in months when sales fall".
Analysis (An): develop the chain of consequences. Use connectives such as "this means that", "as a result", "which leads to", "therefore", "in the long run". Each developed chain is usually worth an additional mark.
Evaluation (E): judge, prioritise and qualify. Signal it clearly with phrases such as "on balance", "the most important factor is", "this depends on", "however, in the short run".
For shorter 4-mark "explain" questions, a lighter version is enough: Point, Explain, Apply (PEA). You do not need a conclusion, but you do need two distinct, developed points rather than four undeveloped ones.
5. Writing Introductions and Conclusions |
IGCSE Business essays are short, so introductions should be short too. One sentence that shows you understand the business situation is enough; there is no reward for retelling the whole case study.
Weak introduction: "In this essay I am going to talk about a business and whether it should do something."
Strong introduction: "Zenith Bikes is a small, labour-intensive manufacturer facing rising wage costs and increasing competition from imported bicycles. This essay examines whether investing in automated machinery is the right decision."
Conclusions do the heavy lifting in evaluation questions. A good conclusion usually contains three moves: a clear decision, a reason linked to the context, and a condition or trade-off. Avoid introducing brand-new arguments in the conclusion - it belongs in the body.
Decision → Contextual reason → Condition
Useful conclusion stems include: "On balance, the business should ... because ... provided that ...", "This depends largely on ...", and "In the short run ... but in the long run ...". Each of these forces you to evaluate rather than describe.
6. The Paragraph Model: PEEL and PEA | 段落模式:PEEL 与 PEA
Every body paragraph should follow a repeatable pattern. For evaluation paragraphs use PEEL: Point, Evidence, Explain, Link.
- Point: state the argument in one sentence.
- Evidence: quote a fact or figure from the case.
- Explain: develop the chain of consequences.
- Link: connect back to the question or to the opposite side.
A worked 6-mark paragraph might read: "One effect of rising wages is higher total costs. The case states that labour is 60% of the firm's costs, so a 10% wage rise would increase total costs significantly. This reduces the profit margin on each unit sold and leaves less retained profit for reinvestment, which could slow down the planned expansion. This effect is likely to be greater for a labour-intensive producer than for a capital-intensive one."
For the opposite side of the argument, use a contrasting opener: "However", "On the other hand", "A counter-argument is that". Alternating your connectives makes the structure visible to the examiner, which makes it easier to award analysis marks.
Keep paragraphs focused on one idea. Two fully developed paragraphs beat five half-finished ones, and they take less time to write.
