📚 Year 10 CIE Economics: Summer Prep & Bridging Course | Year 10 CIE
Welcome to your summer bridging course designed for Year 10 students about to embark on the CIE IGCSE Economics journey. This programme introduces you to the fundamental concepts you will encounter in the first term, builds your economic vocabulary, and sharpens the analytical skills needed to excel. Whether you have never studied Economics before or are moving from another curriculum, this bridging content gives you a confident head start.
1. What is Economics? |
Economics is a social science that studies how people make choices to allocate scarce resources among competing uses. It asks questions like: what to produce, how to produce, and for whom to produce. The subject gives you a toolkit to analyse everyday decisions made by individuals, firms, and governments.
Economists build models to simplify reality and forecast outcomes. In Year 10, you will begin with simple diagrams and gradually move to more sophisticated theories. The CIE syllabus wants you not only to learn facts but also to apply logic to real-world situations.
2. The Economic Problem: Scarcity and Infinite Wants |
The core of all economics is the basic economic problem: resources are finite, yet human wants are virtually unlimited. Because we cannot have everything, we must make choices. This universal condition is called scarcity. It forces individuals and societies to prioritise.
Scarcity is not the same as poverty. Even wealthy nations face scarcity because resources like time, oil, clean water, and skilled workers are limited. As a student, your own scarcity might be time: you must decide between revising Economics, doing sports, or relaxing.
3. Opportunity Cost: The Heart of Decision-Making |
Every choice involves a sacrifice. Opportunity cost is the value of the next best alternative forgone when a decision is made. If a government spends a budget on building a hospital rather than a school, the opportunity cost is the benefit lost from the school that could have been built.
Understanding opportunity cost helps individuals and businesses weigh trade-offs rationally. For you, attending an extra Economics lesson instead of working a part-time job means the wage you could have earned is your opportunity cost. This concept will reappear regularly in your CIE syllabus, from consumer choices to government policy.
4. Factors of Production |
To produce goods and services, an economy requires four categories of inputs, known as factors of production. These are land (natural resources), labour (human effort), capital (man-made tools and machinery), and enterprise (the risk-taking ability to combine the other three factors).
Each factor earns a reward: land receives rent, labour earns wages, capital yields interest, and enterprise gains profit. A clear grasp of these categories will help you analyse production decisions and economic growth later in Year 10.
The PPC is a diagram that shows the maximum combinations of two goods an economy can produce with its existing resources and technology. It illustrates scarcity, choice, and opportunity cost at a glance. Points on the curve represent efficient production; points inside show unemployed resources.
If an economy decides to produce more consumer goods, it must shift resources away from capital goods, meaning the opportunity cost is the amount of capital goods given up. A PPC that shifts outward indicates economic growth, caused by factors like better technology or increased labour force.
Moving from point A to B: Opportunity cost = Capital goods sacrificed
This model will be among your first graphical tools in Year 10. Our bridging course guides you in interpreting and drawing PPCs clearly from day one.
6. Demand: The Consumer's Side |
Demand is the quantity of a good or service that consumers are willing and able to buy at various prices over a given time period. The law of demand states that, ceteris paribus, as price falls, quantity demanded rises. This inverse relationship is shown by a downward-sloping demand curve.
Beyond price, factors like income, tastes, prices of substitutes, and advertising can shift the entire demand curve. In an exam, you must distinguish between a movement along the demand curve (caused by price change) and a shift of the curve (caused by other factors).
7. Supply: The Producer's Side |
Supply is the quantity of a product that producers are willing and able to offer for sale at different prices. The law of supply says that higher prices typically lead to higher quantity supplied, assuming other things remain constant. The supply curve therefore slopes upward.
Supply can be influenced by production costs, technology, taxes, subsidies, and the number of sellers. In the CIE syllabus, you will learn how these determinants cause the supply curve to shift left or right, affecting market outcomes.
8. Market Equilibrium and Price Changes |
When demand and supply interact, they determine the equilibrium price and quantity in a market. At equilibrium, the quantity demanded equals the quantity supplied. If the price is set above equilibrium, a surplus occurs; if below, a shortage arises. Market forces push price back towards equilibrium.
Changes in demand or supply create new equilibria. For example, a rise in consumer income could increase demand for a normal good, raising both equilibrium price and quantity. Being able to predict these adjustments is a key skill your summer bridging course will develop through diagram practice.
9. Introduction to Elasticity |
Price elasticity of demand (PED) measures the responsiveness of quantity demanded to a change in price. It helps firms and governments predict how a price change will affect total revenue and consumer behaviour. PED is calculated as:
PED = %ΔQd / %ΔP
Where %ΔQd is the percentage change in quantity demanded and % lastic. Goods with close substitutes tend to have elastic demand, while necessities usually have inelastic demand.
The CIE Year 10 curriculum also introduces price elasticity of supply (PES) and touches on income elasticity. Your summer prep will give you simple numerical examples and real-world applications to make these concepts stick.
10. Government Intervention and Market Failure |
Markets do not always deliver efficient outcomes. Market failure occurs when the free market fails to allocate resources optimally, for reasons like externalities, public goods, or information gaps. In such cases, governments may intervene to improve social welfare.
Common interventions include indirect taxes (to discourage demerit goods like cigarettes), subsidies (to encourage merit goods like education), price ceilings (maximum prices for essential items), and price floors (minimum prices for agricultural products). You will evaluate the effectiveness of these policies throughout IGCSE Economics.
11. Micro vs. Macro: Two Sides of the Same Coin |
Microeconomics zooms in on individual economic units: households, firms, and specific markets. It analyses demand and supply for particular products, price determination, and resource allocation. Macroeconomics looks at the economy as a whole, focusing on aggregate indicators such as GDP, inflation, unemployment, and international trade.
Both branches are interrelated. For instance, microeconomic decisions by millions of consumers affect total demand, which then influences macroeconomic growth. Your CIE syllabus weaves the two together so you can appreciate how local events can ripple across the entire economy.
12. Study Skills for CIE Economics Success | CIE
To thrive in Year 10 Economics, you need more than just understanding theories; you need to apply, analyse, and evaluate. Use the Command Word Guide from CIE (e.g. 'Define', 'Explain', 'Discuss') to structure your answers. Always link concepts to real-world examples, such as the impact of a fuel tax on transport costs.
Build a glossary of key economic terms from the very first week. Practice drawing and labelling diagrams regularly, as diagram accuracy is essential in Paper 2. Finally, attempt past paper questions early to become familiar with the exam format. Our summer bridging course provides you with a structured revision schedule and targeted exercises.
