📚 Sprint Coaching for International Academic Competitions |
International academic competitions compress years of preparation into a single sitting of two to four hours. Sprint coaching exists to make that sitting count: it does not try to teach a whole subject from scratch, but to convert what a student already knows into marks, ranks and qualification thresholds.
1. What Sprint Coaching Really Is | 冲刺辅导到底是什么
Sprint coaching for international competitions is a short, high-intensity, date-bound programme. Unlike a school course, it has a deadline that cannot move: the contest date. Every part of the plan is reverse-engineered from that date. A well-built sprint runs three workstreams in parallel: knowledge patching, strategic training, and state management. Coaching that only delivers knowledge patching tends to produce students who "know the maths but cannot score".
The first workstream fills the gaps that the competition syllabus exposes but the school syllabus ignores. The second trains decisions: how to allocate time, when to abandon a question, when a guess is mathematically worth it. The third covers sleep, anxiety and the stamina to sit a three-hour paper without a collapse in accuracy in the final thirty minutes.
2. A Map of Major Competitions |
Before any coaching starts, students and parents should agree on which competition is actually being targeted. Different contests reward different skills: speed and accuracy, deep proof writing, computational power, or experimental design. Choosing the wrong target wastes an entire sprint cycle.

3. Building the Sprint Timeline |
A sprint is usually twelve to sixteen weeks long, and it works backwards from the contest date. The first block is diagnostic, the middle blocks are thematic, and the final block is full simulation. Cramming all revision into the last three weeks reliably produces panic and score regression.
Target scores should be expressed as a rate, not a vague feeling:
4. Diagnostic Assessment and Ability Profiling |
A proper diagnosis uses a real past paper under real conditions: same duration, no dictionary, no phone, no breaks. The point is not the raw score but the pattern behind it. Tutors should log accuracy, time per question, and the type of each failure.
Four failure types are worth separating. Knowledge gaps mean the student has never met the concept. Method gaps mean the concept is known but the standard technique is not. Execution errors are arithmetic and transcription slips. Strategic errors are good solutions applied to the wrong question, or questions abandoned too early or too late. Each type needs a completely different remedy, and confusing them is the single most common reason a sprint fails to raise scores.
5. Filling Knowledge Gaps and Beyond-Syllabus Modules |
Competition syllabi always contain material that school courses never reach. In mathematics these are number theory, combinatorics, inequalities and functional equations. In physics they are non-inertial frames, rotational dynamics, thermodynamics with calculus, and error analysis. In chemistry they are stereochemistry, kinetics and spectroscopy.
Take inequalities as an example. Students must be able to apply the arithmetic-geometric mean inequality instantly and recognise its equality condition, because most competition questions are decided by that condition.
(a + b) ÷ 2 ≥ √ab (a ≥ 0, b ≥ 0,当且仅当 a = b 时取等号)
Similarly, in number theory, modular arithmetic plus the pigeonhole principle solves a large share of AIME problems. Tutors should teach these as reusable tools with trigger conditions, not as isolated tricks.
6. Past-Paper Driven Training |
Past papers are the only training material that is guaranteed to match the real difficulty, wording style and time pressure. A sprint should revolve around them. The recommended cycle is: sit the paper under timed conditions, mark it strictly against the official solution, then spend at least twice the exam duration analysing every question, including the ones answered correctly.
Three variations matter. Timed papers build pacing. Untimed deep papers build thinking depth on two or three hard questions. Re-sits of previously failed papers, three weeks later, test whether the correction actually stuck. A student who only does the first variation often plateaus at the same score for six weeks in a row.
7. Exam-Day Strategy and Decision Rules |
Competition marks are lost mainly through bad decisions rather than ignorance. Every serious sprint should end with explicit rules that the student has rehearsed dozens of times, so that no conscious thought is needed under pressure.
Useful rules include: first pass through the whole paper, sorting questions into A (can solve), B (solvable with effort) and C (skip). Never spend more than double the average time on any question in the first pass. On AMC, leaving a question blank costs 1.5 points compared with a wrong answer, so guessing should be reserved for cases where two options have been eliminated. On written papers such as BPhO or UKChO, always show the formula, the substitution and the unit, because method marks survive an arithmetic slip.
8. Error Logs and Systematic Review |
An error log is not a scrapbook of wrong answers. It is a three-column record: the question in full, the exact cause of the error in the student's own words, and the corrected method with a variant question that tests the same idea.
Spaced review is what turns the log into retained ability. A practical interval schedule is one day, three days, seven days and twenty-one days after the original error. Each review should take under five minutes per question and must be done from a blank page, not by rereading the notes.
9. English Expression and Written Formats |
For Olympiad-style papers and for research competitions such as HiMCM, John Locke or ISEF, English is not a translation layer but part of the mark scheme. Written answers must follow a clear structure: state the claim, give the evidence or equation, then explain the reasoning that links them.
Two practical habits help. First, build a personal glossary of technical terms in English (for example, "without loss of generality", "by symmetry", "the converse is not true") and use them until they are automatic. Second, read past high-scoring solutions aloud, because many students understand a proof perfectly but cannot reproduce its phrasing under time pressure.
第一,建立个人的英文术语表,例如 "without loss of generality"、"by symmetry"、"the converse is not true",练到脱口而出。
10. Mindset, Stamina and Family Support |
Competition performance degrades faster from fatigue than from lack of knowledge. Sleep debt of two hours a night can cost more marks than a missing topic. Sprint plans should therefore protect sleep, schedule training at the same time of day as the real contest, and include at least one deliberately difficult mock so the student experiences failure in a safe setting.
The family role is to reduce noise, not to add pressure. Parents should handle logistics, food and transport, and avoid asking "how many questions did you get right today". After a disappointing result, the most useful sentence is a scheduling question, not an evaluative one.
11. Choosing a Coach or Programme |
When comparing providers, ask for evidence rather than slogans. A serious competition coach should be able to show past student results in the specific contest, a written plan with weekly deliverables, a real diagnostic report, and a marking service that returns annotated scripts rather than a single score.
Class size matters more than price at this level. Beyond six students, individual error patterns are rarely addressed, and the fastest and slowest students both lose. Online one-to-one or small-group formats work well provided the platform allows live handwriting and instant file sharing.
Two low-cost resources are worth mentioning. An English-Chinese dictionary such as the Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary (10th edition) helps with unfamiliar wording in problem statements, and second-hand original textbooks from marketplaces such as eBay can cut preparation costs substantially.
