1. The Theoretical Framework: Media Language and Semiotics |

The OCR Media Studies course is built around a theoretical framework consisting of four key areas: media language, representation, media industries and audiences. Media language refers to the way a media text uses visual, verbal and technical codes to create meaning. Semiotics, the study of signs, is central to analysing media language. A sign consists of the signifier (the physical form) and the signified (the mental concept).

For example, a red rose can be a signifier that signifies romance or love. Media producers select specific signs to encode preferred meanings, which audiences then decode. Roland Barthes introduced the concepts of denotation and connotation to explain how signs work on multiple levels.

The material form of the sign (e.g. a word, image, sound) / 符号的物质形式(如单词、图像、声音)
Signified / 所指The concept it represents (e.g. the idea of 'rose') / 它所代表的概念(如“玫瑰”的观念)
Code / 符码A system of signs that create meaning (e.g. technical code like lighting) / 创造意义的符号系统(如灯光等技术性符码)

2. Denotation and Connotation |

Denotation is the literal, descriptive meaning of a sign - what you actually see or hear. Connotation is the associated, cultural meaning it carries. In film posters, denotation might be a character holding a weapon; the connotation could be danger, power or violence.

A shadowy alley denotes a narrow passage in dim light; it connotes fear, mystery or imminent threat. Producers deliberately choose images, colours and sounds to trigger intended connotations in the target audience. Analysis always moves from describing what is present (denotation) to explaining what it suggests (connotation).

3. Camera Shots, Angles and Movement |

Camera shots and angles are technical codes that construct meaning. Close-up shots emphasise emotion or detail, while extreme long shots establish setting and context. Low-angle shots make a character appear powerful or dominant; high-angle shots can make them seem vulnerable. Over-the-shoulder shots help position the audience with a particular character's perspective.

Extreme close-up (ECU) / 极特写Intensifies emotion, shows minute detail / 强化情感,展示细微细节
Common for dialogue, balances character and setting / 常用于对话,平衡角色与场景
Long shot (LS) / 远景Shows full body, places figure in environment / 显示全身,将人物置于环境中
Sets context and location at the start of a scene / 在场景开头设定环境和地点

Camera movement also adds meaning. A tracking shot may follow a character to build tension, a pan reveals a new space gradually, and a zoom can magnify importance or shock. Combined with shot length, these choices control pace and audience engagement.

4. Mise-en-scène and Sound |

Mise-en-scène (everything placed within the frame) includes setting, props, costume, lighting, colour and figure expression/movement. These elements work together to create mood and meaning. For example, low-key lighting in a crime drama connotes secrecy and tension. High-key lighting suggests optimism and clarity, often used in sitcoms.

Sound is equally important. Diegetic sound originates within the story world (dialogue, footsteps, car engines). Non-diegetic sound exists outside it and guides audience response (voiceover narration, soundtrack, sound effects added in post-production). Synchronous sound matches the image source, while asynchronous sound does not, often creating unease. A sound bridge links two scenes by carrying sound across a cut.

5. Editing and Narrative Theories |

Editing shapes the pace of a media text and influences how the audience interprets time and space. Continuity editing aims to create a seamless flow (shot-reverse-shot for conversation, the 180-degree rule to maintain consistent screen direction). Montage editing juxtaposes contrasting images to create meaning or compress time, famously used by Eisenstein. Pace of editing (fast cuts for action, long takes for reflection) affects emotional intensity.

Narrative theories help us analyse story structures. Todorov's narrative theory proposes that stories move from an initial equilibrium, through a disruption, to a recognition of the disruption, an attempt to repair it, and a new equilibrium. Propp identified recurring character archetypes: the hero, villain, donor, dispatcher, helper, princess and false hero. Barthes' enigma code refers to mysteries that drive the narrative forward, while his action code denotes events that imply further action.

In your exam, apply these theories to show how meaning is constructed in the Close Study Products.

6. Representation | 表征

Representation is how media texts portray people, places, events and ideas. It always involves selection, construction and mediation - reality is never simply reflected. Stereotypes simplify complex social groups into a few exaggerated, recognisable traits, often to allow quick audience identification. Countertypes deliberately challenge and subvert these stereotypes. When analysing representation, consider gender, ethnicity, age, social class, sexuality and disability, and ask whose viewpoint is being privileged or marginalised.

For example, in many car advertisements, men are represented as assertive, technically knowledgeable drivers, while women might be positioned as passengers or concerned with safety. A public health campaign might countertype by showing male carers, challenging traditional gender roles. The media theorist Stuart Hall argued that representations can reinforce or contest dominant ideologies.

7. Media Audiences: Theories and Targeting |

Audiences are not passive receivers; they actively interpret media texts based on their cultural backgrounds and personal experiences. The uses and gratifications theory (Blumler and Katz) suggests audiences consciously choose media to fulfil specific needs: information/surveillance, personal identity, social interaction/integration and entertainment/diversion.

Stuart Hall's reception theory states that producers encode a preferred meaning, but audiences can decode it in three ways: dominant (accepting the intended meaning), negotiated (partly accepting, partly adapting) or oppositional (rejecting the intended meaning entirely). Audience positioning refers to how a text places the audience in relation to characters or events. Media producers identify target audiences through demographics (age, gender, income, education) and psychographics (attitudes, values, aspirations). Niche and mass audiences require different content and marketing strategies.

Uses and Gratifications / 使用与满足Active audience uses media to meet needs / 主动受众使用媒体满足需求

8. Media Industries: Ownership, Funding and Regulation |

Understanding how media industries operate is crucial. Key concepts include public service broadcasting (e.g. BBC, funded by the television licence fee, required to inform, educate and entertain) versus commercial media (ITV, Channel 4, funded chiefly by advertising). Media conglomerates like Disney or News Corp own multiple companies across different media sectors, enabling cross-media convergence and synergy (where the release of a film is supported by a soundtrack album, video game and merchandise).

Regulation is essential. Ofcom is the UK's communications regulator, responsible for protecting audiences from harmful or offensive content, ensuring fairness and accuracy in news, and maintaining competition. The BBFC classifies films by age rating. The production, distribution and exhibition (or exchange) cycle describes how a media product is created, marketed, distributed to cinemas/TV/online platforms and finally experienced by audiences. Digital convergence has disrupted traditional models, allowing Netflix and YouTube to bypass conventional gatekeepers.

9. Media Contexts and Close Study Products (CSPs) | 媒体语境与近距研究产品(CSP)

OCR requires you to apply your knowledge and analytical skills to a set of Close Study Products (CSPs) prescribed by the exam board. These products span print adverts, film posters, magazines, music videos, television episodes, radio, online content and video games. For each CSP, you must explore its historical, social, cultural and political contexts. Contextual understanding deepens your analysis: a 1960s advert reflects very different gender expectations compared to a contemporary campaign.

When revising CSPs, annotate texts thoroughly and identify media language choices, representations, industry contexts and the likely target audience interpretations. Practice answering unseen analysis questions to build confidence. Remember to use precise terminology (e.g. 'low-angle close-up connotes...' rather than 'the camera looks up').

Build a glossary of key terms, watch the CSP episodes and videos repeatedly, and discuss the products with classmates. The more you practise applying the theoretical framework, the more confident you will become in analysing any media text.
