1. Plato's Theory of Forms |
Plato argued that the visible world we perceive through our senses is merely a shadow of a higher, unchanging reality. The Theory of Forms proposes that true reality consists of perfect, eternal, and immaterial concepts — such as Justice, Beauty, and Goodness — which exist independently of the particular instances we encounter in daily life. For example, no single drawn circle is perfectly round, yet we all recognise the concept of 'perfect circularity'. Plato would say that this recognition occurs because our soul remembers the Form of the Circle from the realm of the Forms.
A high-frequency exam question asks students to explain the relationship between particulars and Forms. The key is to use the language of 'participation' or 'imitation': a particular beautiful painting is beautiful only insofar as it participates in or imitates the Form of Beauty. Many students simply state that the Forms are 'perfect versions' without fully explaining this participatory relationship. Examiner reports consistently note that stronger answers use technical vocabulary precisely and unpack what 'participation' means.
The most common error is confusing the Form of the Good with other Forms. The Form of the Good holds a special status in Plato's hierarchy: it illuminates all other Forms, much as the sun illuminates the visible world in the Analogy of the Sun. Students often lose marks by treating it as just one Form among many, missing its role as the source of all reality and truth. Remember that for Plato, knowledge of the Good is the ultimate goal of philosophy.
2. Aristotle's Four Causes |
Unlike Plato, Aristotle believed that the essence of things resides within the physical world itself. To fully explain why any object exists or changes, he developed the doctrine of the Four Causes. The Material Cause answers 'What is it made of?' The Efficient Cause answers 'What brought it into being?' The Formal Cause answers 'What is its defining shape or structure?' The Final Cause — the most important for Aristotle — answers 'What is its purpose or function (telos)?' A typical exam example is a marble statue: its material cause is marble, its efficient cause is the sculptor, its formal cause is the shape of a figure, and its final cause is to honour a deity or commemorate a person.
Many exam questions require students to apply the Four Causes to unfamiliar examples, such as an acorn or a human heart. An acorn's material cause is its organic tissue; its efficient cause is the parent oak tree; its formal cause is the DNA blueprint for an oak; its final cause is to grow into a mature oak tree. The most successful answers explicitly link each cause to Aristotle's broader metaphysical framework, which sees nature as inherently goal-directed (teleological). This contrasts sharply with modern scientific explanations that often exclude final causes.
Confusing the Formal Cause with the Final Cause is the most frequent mistake. Students often state that the formal cause of an acorn is 'to become an oak tree', but that is its final cause. The formal cause is its current structural blueprint — the defining characteristics that make it an acorn rather than a chestnut. Another weakness is treating the Efficient Cause as merely 'the maker' without recognising that for natural objects, the efficient cause is the parent organism. Always ask yourself: is this cause describing what the thing already is (formal) or what it is striving to become (final)?
3. The Design Argument (Teleological Argument) |
The Design Argument claims that the complexity and apparent purposefulness observed in the natural world point towards an intelligent designer, identified as God. William Paley's watchmaker analogy is the most commonly examined version. Paley argued that if you found a watch on a heath, you would infer a watchmaker because of the watch's complex parts working together for the purpose of telling time. By analogy, the universe — with its far greater complexity, such as the human eye — implies a divine designer. Thomas Aquinas's Fifth Way offers a different formulation, focusing on how non-intelligent natural bodies act towards an end, which requires an intelligent director.
Examiners frequently test whether students can distinguish between design arguments based on analogy (like Paley's) and those based on universal teleology (like Aquinas's). Paley uses a specific artefact as an analogue, whereas Aquinas begins from the general observation that everything in nature acts for an end. When evaluating, high marks go to students who can discuss David Hume's criticisms precisely — especially his point that the universe might be more like a living organism than a machine, or that multiple gods could have collaborated on the design, or that an apprentice god might have made a flawed world.
A major pitfall is overstating Paley's claim. Paley does not argue that the universe and a watch are identical; he argues they are analogous in the relevant respect — exhibiting purposeful arrangement of parts. Students who dismiss the argument by simply saying 'the universe is not a watch' miss the logical structure of analogical reasoning. Another error is conflating 'complexity' with 'design'. Complexity alone does not imply design; it is specified complexity — parts arranged for a function — that drives the argument. Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection challenges design precisely by showing how apparent purpose can emerge from unguided processes.
4. The Cosmological Argument and Infinite Regress |
The Cosmological Argument seeks to establish God as the first cause or necessary ground of the universe's existence. Aquinas's first three ways are the standard OCR focus. The First Way (Motion/Change) argues that everything in motion is moved by something else, and an infinite regress of movers is impossible, so there must be a first unmoved mover. The Second Way (Causation) applies the same logic to efficient causes: an infinite chain of causes cannot exist, so a first uncaused cause is necessary. The Third Way (Contingency) argues that contingent beings — things that could not exist — depend on a necessary being that exists by its own nature.
Students must be prepared to explain why an infinite regress is deemed impossible by Aquinas. He argues that if there is no first mover, there are no intermediate movers and thus no movement now. An infinite regress, in his view, is like an infinitely long train without a locomotive — it can never begin to move. However, examiners look for students who can evaluate this claim: modern cosmology and mathematics entertain actual infinities, and some philosophers, like Hume, argued that if each member of an infinite series has a cause, the whole series is explained without needing a first cause.
Confusing the First Cause with a temporal beginning is a classic mistake. Aquinas is not necessarily arguing that the universe had a beginning in time; many medieval thinkers accepted the theoretical possibility of an eternal universe. Rather, he argues that even if the universe were eternal, it would still require a sustaining first cause here and now to explain ongoing motion and causation. Students also frequently mishandle the Third Way by claiming that 'if everything is contingent, then nothing would exist', without explaining why. The precise argument is that a set of entirely contingent beings cannot explain its own collective existence, so a non-contingent foundation is required.
The existence of evil and suffering poses the most powerful challenge to belief in an omnipotent, omnibenevolent God. OCR expects students to articulate the logical problem of evil, formulated by Epicurus and later refined by J. L. Mackie: if God is all-powerful, He can prevent evil; if God is all-loving, He wants to prevent evil; yet evil exists; therefore, such a God does not exist. This is a deductive argument aiming for logical contradiction. The evidential problem, associated with William Rowe, takes a different approach: the sheer quantity and distribution of gratuitous suffering makes God's existence highly improbable, even if not logically impossible.
The Augustinian theodicy is the most frequently examined response. Augustine argued that evil is not a substance but a privation of good, like a hole in a fabric — it has no independent existence. Evil entered creation through the misuse of free will by angels and humans, causing a cosmic fall. Since all evil is traced to free will, God remains justified in allowing it because free will is a greater good. The Irenaean theodicy, developed by John Hick, offers an alternative: evil is a tool for soul-making, allowing humans to develop virtues through struggle and ultimately freely choose a relationship with God.
Merely describing a theodicy without critiquing it will cap marks at a mid-level. Stronger answers evaluate whether the free will defence truly justifies natural evil — the suffering caused by earthquakes, diseases, and predators. If evil is a privation, why does it feel so real and powerful? The evidential problem also challenges both theodicies: the sheer scale of apparently pointless suffering seems disproportionate to any soul-making benefit. Students often mistake the theodicies for 'proofs' rather than faith-based interpretations that try to show belief in God is not irrational despite evil's existence.
6. Utilitarianism: Bentham and Mill |
Utilitarianism is a consequentialist ethical theory judging actions solely by their outcomes. Jeremy Bentham's Act Utilitarianism proposes the principle of utility: the right action is the one that produces the greatest happiness for the greatest number. Bentham devised the hedonic calculus to quantify pleasure and pain across seven factors — intensity, duration, certainty, propinquity, fecundity, purity, and extent. Every act is evaluated on a case-by-case basis. Bentham's approach is egalitarian: 'each to count for one, and none for more than one', meaning everyone's pleasure counts equally regardless of social status.
John Stuart Mill's Rule Utilitarianism is a vital comparison point. Mill argued that some pleasures are qualitatively superior to others — famously stating it is 'better to be a human being dissatisfied than a pig satisfied'. He introduced higher (intellectual, moral) and lower (bodily) pleasures, rejecting Bentham's purely quantitative calculus. Mill also argued that we should follow general rules (like 'do not lie') that tend to promote utility, rather than calculating each act. This addresses a key weakness of Act Utilitarianism: it can theoretically justify terrible actions like punishing an innocent person if it produces net happiness.
Failing to explain the transition from Act to Rule Utilitarianism is a common weakness. Students must clearly state that Mill was concerned about the tyranny of the majority — Bentham's calculus could permit the oppression of minorities if it maximised total happiness. Rule Utilitarianism offers protection through rules that, if generally followed, create a more stable and just society. Another frequent error is describing the hedonic calculus without applying it. Strong exam answers construct a brief worked example, showing how the factors interact for a specific moral dilemma, which demonstrates genuine understanding to the examiner.
7. Kantian Ethics: Duty and the Categorical Imperative |
Immanuel Kant's deontological ethics stands in direct opposition to utilitarianism. For Kant, the moral worth of an action lies not in its consequences but in whether it is done from duty, in accordance with the moral law. Only actions motivated by duty (not inclination, emotion, or self-interest) have genuine moral worth. Kant seeks to establish a rational foundation for ethics, independent of empirical circumstances or personal desires. The core of his system is the Categorical Imperative — an unconditional moral command that applies to all rational beings universally.
The first formulation of the Categorical Imperative — the Formula of Universal Law — is the most examined: 'Act only according to that maxim whereby you can at the same time will that it should become a universal law.' A maxim is a personal rule of action, like 'I will make a false promise to get money.' To test it, you universalise it: could everyone make false promises? This generates a contradiction in conception because the very practice of promising would collapse if everyone lied. Therefore, the act is impermissible. The second formulation — the Formula of Humanity — commands us to treat humanity always as an end in itself, never merely as a means.
A very common exam error is treating the Categorical Imperative as if it asks 'what would happen if everyone did that?' This is a consequentialist test, not Kant's. Kant is not interested in the undesirable outcomes of universal lying, but in the logical impossibility of the maxim being universalised without contradiction. A related mistake is confusing contradictions in conception with contradictions in willing. A contradiction in conception means the action cannot even be coherently thought as a universal law (like false promising). A contradiction in willing means you could conceive the universalised world, but you could not rationally will it — for example, a maxim of never helping others, which would will away the assistance you yourself might need.
8. Natural Moral Law as a Deontological System |
Natural Moral Law, rooted in Aristotle and developed by Thomas Aquinas, argues that morality is grounded in the nature of humanity and the purpose (telos) for which we were created. The fundamental precept is to 'do good and avoid evil.' From this, Aquinas derives primary precepts: preserve life, reproduce, educate offspring, live in an ordered society, and worship God. These primary precepts are absolute and apply universally. Secondary precepts are derived through human reason applying primary precepts to specific circumstances, and these can vary or admit exceptions.
OCR examiners look for the distinction between an action being intrinsically good and its goodness arising from its alignment with our natural ends. A real and apparent good distinction is crucial: a real good fulfils our true nature as rational beings aimed at God, while an apparent good may seem attractive but ultimately frustrates our telos — like indulgence in excessive alcohol, which appears good (pleasure) but harms the primary precept of preserving life. This framework allows Aquinas to explain moral error: we sin when we pursue apparent goods rather than real goods, clouded by ignorance or emotion.
A frequent misunderstanding is assuming that because Natural Moral Law is deontological, all acts are treated as identical regardless of context. In fact, the doctrine of double effect introduces a sophisticated framework for cases where an action has both good and bad effects. An act like saving a pregnant woman's life through surgery that indirectly causes the foetus's death may be permissible if the intention is solely the good effect (saving the mother), the bad effect is not the means to the good effect, and there is a proportionate reason. Students often forget the four conditions of double effect or apply them incorrectly.
9. Situation Ethics: Agape at the Centre |
Joseph Fletcher's Situation Ethics represents a middle ground between legalistic (rule-based) and antinomian (no rules) approaches. It proposes one absolute principle — agape, or self-giving Christian love — but insists that in any situation, the most loving outcome determines the right course of action. Fletcher famously stated that 'the ruling norm of Christian decision is love: nothing else.' Unlike utilitarianism, agape is not about maximising pleasure but about treating persons as intrinsically valuable, willing the neighbour's good unconditionally. Fletcher proposed six fundamental principles (only love is intrinsically good, love is the only norm, love and justice are the same, etc.) and four working presumptions (pragmatism, relativism, positivism, personalism).
Exam questions frequently ask students to apply Situation Ethics to difficult cases and to compare it with Utilitarianism and Natural Law. Fletcher's own examples are instructive: he argued that 'Baby Doe' with severe birth defects might be allowed to die if that was the most loving act, and that sacrificial adultery — such as a woman in a concentration camp becoming pregnant to be released and rejoin her family — could be justified by agape. The key distinction from Utilitarianism is Fletcher's insistence that persons, not pleasure, are the measure of love. Unlike Natural Law, no act is intrinsically wrong; everything depends on the context and the demands of love.
The most dangerous exam pitfall is treating agape as merely 'doing what feels loving' or 'being nice.' Fletcher demands a rigorous, thoughtful calculation of what will truly serve the neighbour's long-term well-being — which may involve difficult, painful decisions. Students should also avoid caricaturing Natural Law or Utilitarianism as straw men when comparing theories. Rather than stating 'Natural Law is too rigid', explain specifically how Fletcher's rejection of intrinsic evil and his personalism offer a genuine alternative. Also, recognise that critics argue Fletcher's relativism undermines moral consistency, and that without an authoritative scripture or church, determining the loving thing becomes entirely subjective.
10. Philosophical Language: Definitions and Fallacies |
Precision with philosophical vocabulary is consistently highlighted in OCR examiner reports as a discriminator between grade levels. Key terms must be used accurately: 'a priori' means knowledge independent of experience; 'a posteriori' means knowledge dependent on experience; 'analytic' statements are true or false by definition; 'synthetic' statements are true or false based on how the world is. An inductive argument aims for probability, while a deductive argument aims for certainty — if its premises are true, the conclusion must be true. These terms form the basic toolkit for evaluating arguments across the specification.
Students are expected not only to define these terms but to correctly classify arguments from the specification. The Design Argument is a posteriori (based on observation of the world) and inductive (it claims God's existence is probable, not logically necessary). The Ontological Argument, by contrast, is a priori and deductive. Knowing these classifications is essential because the relevant criticisms depend on the argument type: an inductive argument can be challenged by evidence, whereas a deductive argument must be challenged at the level of its logic or premises.
Common logical fallacies appear in evaluation questions, and students who can name and explain them score highly. The fallacy of composition occurs when one assumes what is true of a part must be true of the whole — exactly what some critics accuse the Cosmological Argument of doing when it moves from 'everything in the universe has a cause' to 'the universe as a whole has a cause.' The appeal to ignorance fallacy argues that a claim is true because it has not been proved false. Bertrand Russell's objection to the Cosmological Argument uses this charge: just because we cannot conceive an infinite regress does not mean it is impossible.
11. Structuring Evaluation: PEEL and Counter-Arguments | 评价结构:PEEL 与反论证
OCR markschemes for the 15-mark evaluation questions (specifically in the Philosophy of Religion and Ethics papers) reward a clear, balanced argument structure. The PEEL method (Point, Evidence, Explanation, Link) works well but must include genuine critical engagement, not merely description. Start with a clear thesis statement indicating your line of argument. Then present a philosophical reason supporting your view, explain it with precision, and explicitly link it to the question. Crucially, introduce a counter-argument — a strong philosophical objection — and then respond to it, showing why your initial position remains more convincing.
PEEL
