1. Atomic Structure |

Atoms are the smallest particles of an element that still have the chemical properties of that element. The nucleus contains positively charged protons and neutral neutrons, while negatively charged electrons orbit the nucleus in energy levels. The atomic number (Z) is the number of protons and defines the element. The mass number (A) is the total number of protons plus neutrons.

Electrons are arranged in shells (energy levels), with the first shell holding a maximum of 2 electrons and the second and third shells holding up to 8 electrons each. For elements with atomic numbers 1 to 20, the electron arrangement can be written simply, for example 2.8.1 for sodium (Na). The outermost electrons are called valence electrons and determine chemical reactivity.

2. The Periodic Table and Patterns |

The periodic table arranges elements in order of increasing atomic number. Rows are called periods, and columns are called groups. Elements in the same group have the same number of valence electrons and therefore similar chemical properties. For example, all Group 1 elements have one electron in their outer shell and are highly reactive metals.

Group 1 metals (alkali metals) react vigorously with water to produce alkaline solutions and hydrogen gas. Group 7 elements (halogens) exist as diatomic molecules, such as F₂, Cl₂, Br₂, I₂, and their reactivity decreases down the group. Group 0 elements (noble gases) have full outer shells, making them very stable and unreactive. A quick way to determine the ion formed by an element is to check how many electrons it needs to lose or gain to reach a full outer shell, like Na losing one electron to become Na⁺.

3. Bonding and Properties |

Atoms bond together to achieve a full outer electron shell. Ionic bonding occurs between metals and non-metals when electrons are transferred. The metal atom loses electrons to become a positive ion (cation), and the non-metal atom gains them to become a negative ion (anion). The strong electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged ions holds the ionic lattice together and gives ionic compounds high melting and boiling points.

Covalent bonding occurs between two non-metal atoms that share pairs of electrons. A molecule like water (H₂O) has two single covalent bonds, and carbon dioxide (CO₂) has two double covalent bonds. Covalent molecular substances have low melting points and do not conduct electricity. Covalent networks, such as diamond and silicon dioxide, have giant lattice structures and very high melting points. Metallic bonding features a lattice of positive ions surrounded by a 'sea' of delocalised electrons, which explains why metals are good conductors of heat and electricity and can be shaped easily.

4. Chemical Formulae and Equations |

A chemical formula shows the types and numbers of atoms in a compound. For ionic compounds, the overall charge must be zero, so we use cross-over of charges to get the correct formula. For example, aluminium oxide contains Al³⁺ and O²⁻, giving the formula Al₂O₃. For covalent molecular substances, prefixes like mono-, di-, tri- are often used, e.g. carbon tetrachloride CCl₄.

Chemical equations show the reactants and products in a reaction. A balanced equation has the same number of each type of atom on both sides. For instance, the combustion of methane is:

CH₄ + 2O₂ → CO₂ + 2H₂O

CH₄ + 2O₂ → CO₂ + 2H₂O

State symbols (s), (l), (g) and (aq) can be added to show the physical state or aqueous solution. Equations can also be written as ionic equations, where spectator ions that do not change are omitted, leaving only the reacting ions.

5. The Mole Concept |

or amount of substance. One mole of any substance contains 6.02 × 10²³ particles (Avogadro' the formula mass of water H₂O is (2×1) + 16 = 18, so one mole of water has a mass of 18 g.

Key formulas to remember:

n = m / M

c = n / V

where n is the number of moles, m is the mass in grams, M is the molar mass, c is concentration in mol/L, and V is the volume of solution in litres. For gases at the same temperature and pressure, equal moles occupy equal volumes. The molar volume is often taken as 22.4 L at standard conditions, but SQA may use data from questions; the ratio method is equally important.

n = m / M

c = n / V

6. Acids, Bases and pH | 酸、碱与 pH

Acids are substances that produce hydrogen ions (H⁺) when dissolved in water. Common laboratory acids include hydrochloric acid (HCl), sulfuric acid (H₂SO₄) and nitric acid (HNO₃). Bases are substances that neutralise acids, and alkalis are soluble bases that produce hydroxide ions (OH⁻) in water.

The pH scale ranges from 0 to 14. Acids have pH less than 7, alkalis have pH greater than 7, and pure water has a pH of 7. During neutralisation, H⁺ ions from the acid react with OH⁻ ions from the alkali to form water:

H⁺(aq) + OH⁻(aq) → H₂O(l)

H⁺(aq) + OH⁻(aq) → H₂O(l)

Non-metal oxides such as CO₂ and SO₂ produce acidic solutions in water, while metal oxides such as Na₂O and CaO are basic. Spectator ions are those that do not change during a reaction; in a titration between HCl and NaOH, Cl⁻ and Na⁺ are spectator ions.

7. Electrochemistry: Cells and Electrolysis |

When a more reactive metal is placed in a solution of a less reactive metal ion, a displacement reaction occurs. For example, zinc added to copper(II) sulfate solution displaces copper:

Zn(s) + Cu²⁺(aq) → Zn²⁺(aq) + Cu(s)

Zn(s) + Cu²⁺(aq) → Zn²⁺(aq) + Cu(s)

In a simple cell, two different metals are connected by a wire and placed in an electrolyte. The greater the difference in reactivity, the larger the voltage produced. The electrochemical series lists metals in order of their tendency to lose electrons, and it helps predict the direction of electron flow and cell voltage.

Electrolysis is the breakdown of an ionic compound using direct current. In the electrolysis of molten lead(II) bromide, lead forms at the cathode and bromine at the anode. In aqueous solutions, water can also be electrolysed, so the product depends on the relative reactivity of the ions. For example, electrolysis of sodium chloride solution produces hydrogen gas at the cathode and chlorine gas at the anode, leaving sodium hydroxide in solution.

8. Fuels and Hydrocarbons |

Crude oil is a mixture of hydrocarbons that can be separated by fractional distillation. Hydrocarbons are compounds containing only carbon and hydrogen. The alkanes are a homologous series with the general formula CₙH₂ₙ₊₂. They are saturated compounds because they contain only single C–C bonds. The first four straight-chain alkanes are methane (CH₄), ethane (C₂H₆), propane (C₃H₈) and butane (C₄H₁₀).

Alkenes contain at least one carbon-carbon double bond and are unsaturated. Their general formula is CₙH₂ₙ. Ethene (C₂H₄) is the simplest alkene. Unsaturated hydrocarbons decolourise bromine water quickly, which is a test for unsaturation. Cracking is a process that breaks long-chain alkanes into smaller alkanes and alkenes, which are more useful as fuels and chemical feedstocks.

Complete combustion of hydrocarbons in excess oxygen produces carbon dioxide and water, while incomplete combustion yields carbon monoxide or carbon (soot). Understanding the balanced equations for combustion is important for energy calculations and pollution discussions.

9. Alcohols and Carboxylic Acids |

Alcohols are another homologous series, containing the functional group –OH (hydroxyl). The general formula for straight-chain alcohols is CₙH₂ₙ₊₁OH. Methanol (CH₃OH) and ethanol (C₂H₅OH) are the first two members. Ethanol is widely used as a solvent and in alcoholic drinks. Alcohols are soluble in water and can be oxidised to carboxylic acids.

Carboxylic acids contain the functional group –COOH. The first member is methanoic acid (HCOOH), followed by ethanoic acid (CH₃COOH). Vinegar is a dilute solution of ethanoic acid. Carboxylic acids are weak acids and react with alcohols in the presence of a strong acid catalyst to form esters. Esters often have pleasant fruity smells and are used in flavourings and fragrances.

In the lab, the reaction of ethanol with ethanoic acid produces ethyl ethanoate, an important ester. The reversible nature of the reaction and characteristic smell make it a common practical investigation in Year 10.

10. Chemical Analysis Techniques |

rette adds the other solution until the indicator changes colour at the end point. Repeating the titration yields concordant results, and calculations then use c₁V₁ = c₂V₂ or the mole method.

Chromatography is a technique for separating mixtures into their components. Paper chromatography uses a stationary phase (paper) and a mobile phase (solvent). The substances travel different distances depending on their solubility and attraction to the paper. By comparing Rf values (distance moved by substance divided by distance moved by solvent), mixture components can be identified.

通过比较比移值 Rf(物质移动距离 / 溶剂移动距离),可以鉴定混合物中的成分。

Flame emission spectroscopy is a more advanced analytical method that can identify metal ions by the specific wavelengths of light they emit when heated in a flame. In Year 10, simple flame tests for cations such as Na⁺ (yellow), K⁺ (lilac), Ca²⁺ (orange-red) and Cu²⁺ (blue-green) are often used. Precipitation reactions also help identify anions, for example adding barium chloride to detect sulfate ions gives a white precipitate of BaSO₄.
