1. Atomic Structure |

Atoms consist of a central nucleus containing protons and neutrons, surrounded by electrons in energy shells. Protons have a relative charge of +1 and mass of 1, neutrons have charge 0 and mass 1, while electrons have charge –1 and negligible mass (~1/1836). The number of protons defines the element (atomic number), and the total number of protons and neutrons gives the mass number.

Electrons occupy shells (energy levels) according to the 2.8.8 rule for the first 20 elements. The electronic configuration determines an element's chemical properties, with the outermost shell (valence) electrons being involved in bonding.

Isotopes are atoms of the same element with the same number of protons but different numbers of neutrons. They have identical chemical properties but slightly different physical properties. The relative atomic mass (Aᵣ) is the average mass of isotopes, taking abundance into account.

2. The Periodic Table |

Elements are arranged in order of increasing atomic number in the Periodic Table. Horizontal rows are called periods, and vertical columns are groups. Elements in the same group have the same number of outer electrons and therefore similar chemical properties.

Group 1 (alkali metals) are soft, reactive metals with one outer electron, forming 1+ ions. Their reactivity increases down the group as the outer electron is more easily lost. Group 7 (halogens) are diatomic non-metals with seven outer electrons, forming 1– ions; reactivity decreases down the group. Group 0 (noble gases) are inert due to full outer shells, existing as monatomic gases.

Transition metals (between Group 2 and Group 3) form ions with variable charges, often coloured compounds, and are useful as catalysts (e.g., iron in Haber process).

3. Chemical Bonding: Ionic, Covalent and Metallic |

Ionic bonding occurs between metals and non-metals. Metal atoms lose electrons to form positive ions, while non-metal atoms gain electrons to form negative ions. The electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged ions forms a giant ionic lattice, which conducts electricity when molten or dissolved because ions are free to move.

Covalent bonding happens between non-metals, where atoms share pairs of electrons to achieve a full outer shell. Simple molecular substances (e.g., H₂O, CO₂, NH₃) have low melting and boiling points due to weak intermolecular forces. Giant covalent structures (e.g., diamond, graphite, SiO₂) have very high melting points and are often hard. Graphite conducts electricity due to delocalised electrons between layers.

Metallic bonding arises from the attraction between positive metal ions and a 'sea' of delocalised electrons. This structure explains metals' malleability (layers can slide) and electrical conductivity (delocalised electrons are mobile). Alloys are mixtures of metals with different-sized atoms, which disrupts regular layers and makes the material stronger.

4. States of Matter and Particle Model |

The particle model describes how particles are arranged and move in solids, liquids and gases. In solids, particles are closely packed in a regular pattern, vibrating in fixed positions. In liquids, particles are close together but can move past each other. In gases, particles are far apart and move randomly at high speeds.

Changes of state, such as melting, boiling, freezing and condensing, involve energy changes but the temperature remains constant during a change of state. The melting and boiling points of a substance are characteristic physical properties. Limitations of this model include that particles are not solid spheres and there are forces between them, which the model often ignores.

5. Writing Chemical Formulae and Equations |

Chemical formulae represent the elements and the ratio of atoms in a compound. When writing formulae for ionic compounds, the total positive charge must balance the total negative charge. For example, sodium chloride is NaCl (Na⁺ and Cl⁻), magnesium chloride is MgCl₂ (Mg²⁺ and 2 Cl⁻).

aq) indicate solid, liquid, gas and aqueous solution respectively. A balanced equation example: 2Mg (s) + O₂ (g) → 2MgO (s).

6. Quantitative Chemistry: Moles and Masses |

s (Avogadro constant) and has a mass in grams equal to its Mᵣ. The number of moles = mass (g) /
