This part of the course tests your ability to think like a psychologist – designing studies, collecting and handling data, and evaluating research methods. Whether you are planning your own investigation or answering exam questions on research methods, a solid grasp of the key principles is vital. This guide breaks down the must-know topics, from writing hypotheses to analysing data and addressing ethical guidelines.

1. Research Aims, Hypotheses and Variables |

A research aim states the purpose of the study, for example, 'To investigate the effect of music on memory.' From this, you develop a hypothesis – a testable statement predicting the relationship between variables. The independent variable (IV) is the factor you manipulate or change, such as whether participants listen to music or silence. The dependent variable (DV) is the factor you measure, such as the number of words recalled. A hypothesis can be experimental (predicting a difference) or null (predicting no difference). An experimental hypothesis can be directional (one-tailed, e.g. 'Participants in the music condition will recall more words than those in silence') or non-directional (two-tailed, e.g. 'There will be a difference in word recall between music and silence conditions'). Operationalisation is key: you must clearly define how the IV and DV will be manipulated and measured, e.g. 'Music' defined as classical music at 60 dB via headphones, 'recall' measured by the number of words correctly written from a list of 20. Always state both the experimental and null hypothesis in your practical write-up.

2. Types of Experiments |

Three main types of experiment are covered in CCEA: laboratory, field and natural (quasi) experiments. A laboratory experiment is conducted in a controlled environment, where the researcher manipulates the IV and controls extraneous variables. This gives high internal validity but may lack ecological validity. A field experiment takes place in a natural setting; the IV is still manipulated, but there is less control over extraneous variables. This increases ecological validity but makes replication harder. In a natural experiment, the IV occurs naturally (e.g., a comparison of children raised in care versus at home); the researcher simply measures the DV. These have high ecological validity but cannot demonstrate cause and effect confidently due to lack of random allocation. You must be able to identify each type from a study description and evaluate its strengths and limitations.

3. Experimental Designs |

When planning a study, you must choose an experimental design: independent groups, repeated measures, or matched pairs. Each has implications for controlling participant variables and order effects. The table below summarises their main features.

DesignAdvantagesDisadvantages
Independent GroupsNo order effects; reduces demand characteristics; participants less likely to guess aimParticipant variables may differ between groups; needs more participants
Repeated MeasuresControls participant variables; fewer participants neededOrder effects (practice, boredom); may reveal the aim
Matched PairsControls participant variables without order effects; reduces demand characteristicsTime-consuming to match; may not match all relevant traits

Independent groups design uses different participants in each condition. Random allocation is essential to minimise participant variables. Repeated measures uses the same participants in all conditions, which controls individual differences but introduces order effects; counterbalancing (changing the order of conditions for half the participants) can help. Matched pairs involve pre-testing participants on a relevant characteristic and then assigning them to conditions in pairs, combining the benefits of the other designs but requiring more effort. In your exam, you should be able to recommend a design for a given study and justify your choice.

4. Controlling Extraneous Variables |

Extraneous variables (EVs) are any variables other than the IV that could affect the DV. If not controlled, they become confounding variables and reduce internal validity. Common EVs include participant variables (age, mood, intelligence), situational variables (noise, temperature, time of day) and experimenter effects (unconscious cues given by the researcher). Control techniques are essential. Standardisation ensures all participants experience the same procedure and instructions. Randomisation uses chance to allocate participants to conditions, helping distribute EVs evenly. Single-blind and double-blind procedures can reduce demand characteristics and experimenter bias. In a practical exam, you may be asked to identify potential EVs in a scenario and suggest appropriate controls, such as using the same room, same time of day, and standardised instructions.

5. Non-experimental Methods: Observations |

Observation is a key non-experimental method. It can be naturalistic (observing behaviour in its natural environment) or controlled (in a laboratory setting). Observations can be participant (the researcher becomes part of the group) or non-participant (the researcher observes from outside). They can also be overt (participants know they are being observed) or covert (they do not know). Data collection often involves creating behavioural categories (specific, observable actions) and using a coding frame or time-interval sampling to record frequency or duration. Observations generate rich, detailed qualitative data but may suffer from observer bias and poor replicability. To improve reliability, use clear, operationalised behavioural categories and check inter-observer reliability by having two observers code the same behaviour and compare agreements.
