1. Confusing Profit with Cash Flow |
Many students believe that if a business is profitable, it automatically has a healthy bank balance. Profit is calculated as revenue minus expenses over a period, but cash flow reflects the timing of money entering and leaving the business.
A company may record a large sale as profit, yet wait 60 days for the customer to pay. During that period it must pay wages, rent and suppliers, which can drain cash. This mismatch is why a profitable business can still go bankrupt.
To correct this, always separate income and expense recognition from actual cash movements. Practise drawing up simple cash flow forecasts to see how timing affects liquidity. Remember: profit ≠ cash, and a business needs both to survive.
Profit = Total revenue − Total costs
Net cash flow = Cash inflows − Cash outflows
- Cash inflows: cash sales, payments from debtors, loans received, sale of assets.
- Cash outflows: wages, rent, supplier payments, interest, tax, equipment purchases.
- Liquidity: the ability to pay short-term debts as they fall due.
2. Treating Turnover, Revenue and Profit as the Same Thing |
Turnover is the total value of sales in a period, and for most businesses turnover means the same as sales revenue. Profit is what is left after costs have been subtracted. Saying "the business made £50,000" is meaningless unless you state whether that figure is turnover or profit.
Gross profit is revenue minus cost of sales, while net profit is gross profit minus other expenses such as rent, advertising and interest. A business can have rising turnover and falling profit at the same time if its costs are growing faster than its sales.
Total revenue = Price × Quantity sold
Gross profit = Revenue − Cost of sales
Net profit = Gross profit − Expenses
3. Mixing Up Fixed and Variable Costs |
A fixed cost does not change when output changes, at least within a relevant range of activity. Rent, insurance, business rates and the salaries of permanent managers are fixed costs. A variable cost rises and falls directly with the level of output, such as raw materials, packaging and piece-rate wages.
A very common error is to say "rent becomes a variable cost because the rent per unit falls as output rises". This is wrong. The rent per unit falls because the same total fixed cost is spread over more units, but the total fixed cost is unchanged. Total costs are simply fixed costs plus variable costs.
| Same total whether output is 100 or 1,000 units 产量 100 或 1,000 件时总额相同 | Rises and falls with each extra unit produced 随每一件额外产量升降 |
Total costs = Fixed costs + Variable costs
4. Believing Break-even Means Profit |
Break-even output is the level of sales at which total revenue equals total costs, so profit is exactly zero. It is not a profit target, and it is not "the point where the business starts making money on every unit sold". Every unit sold above break-even adds contribution to profit.
Students also confuse break-even measured in units with break-even measured in revenue. Break-even in units tells you how many items must be sold; break-even revenue tells you the value of those sales. Margin of safety shows how far current sales can fall before a loss occurs.
Contribution per unit = Selling price − Variable cost per unit
Break-even output = Fixed costs ÷ Contribution per unit
Margin of safety = Actual output − Break-even output
5. Confusing Market Size with Market Share |
Market size is the total value or volume of all sales in a market, while market share is one business's slice of that market. A firm can increase its own sales and still lose market share if the whole market is growing faster than the firm is.
This matters in evaluation questions. "Sales rose by 10%" sounds impressive until the case tells you the market grew by 25%. Always compare the firm's growth with the market's growth before judging performance, and always state the units you are using: £ millions or units sold.
Market share (%) = (Business sales ÷ Total market sales) × 100
6. Thinking Stakeholders and Shareholders Are the Same | 认为利益相关者就是股东
Shareholders own a limited company and are therefore one type of stakeholder, but they are not the only one. Stakeholders are all the groups affected by, or interested in, what a business does: employees, customers, suppliers, lenders, the local community, the government and pressure groups.
Different stakeholders want different things, which creates conflict. Shareholders usually want higher dividends and a rising share price; employees want higher pay and job security; customers want lower prices and better quality; the local community may want less pollution. A good answer identifies the conflict and then judges which group has the most influence in the case.
- Shareholders: dividends, share price growth.
- Employees: fair pay, job security, good working conditions.
- Customers: value for money, quality, reliable service.
- Suppliers: prompt payment, repeat orders.
- Local community: jobs, low pollution, ethical behaviour.
7. Mixing Up Limited and Unlimited Liability |
Unlimited liability means the owner is personally responsible for the debts of the business and may have to sell personal assets to pay them. Sole traders and ordinary partners normally have unlimited liability.
Limited liability means the owners can only lose the money they have invested in the business; their personal assets are protected. A private limited company (Ltd) is a separate legal identity, must register with Companies House and must file annual accounts. The word "limited" refers to liability, not to the size of the business.
8. Treating the Marketing Mix as Four Separate Decisions |
The marketing mix is a set of four interdependent decisions: product, price, place and promotion. Changing one element always affects the others. A high price only works if the product is positioned as premium and the place and promotion support that image.
Price is not the same as cost. Cost sets the floor for pricing, but the final price must also reflect demand, competition and perceived value. Cost-plus pricing adds a mark-up to cost, competitive pricing follows rivals, price skimming starts high, penetration pricing starts low, and a loss leader is sold below cost to attract customers.
The biggest trap is assuming that a good product sells itself. A brilliant product with poor distribution or no promotion will still fail, because customers never hear about it or cannot buy it conveniently.
9. Moving Along a Demand Curve versus Shifting It | 沿需求曲线移动与整条曲线移动
A change in the price of the product itself causes a movement along the demand curve. A change in any non-price factor shifts the whole demand curve to the left or right. Confusing these two ideas is one of the most frequent errors in Year 10 answers.
Non-price factors that shift demand include consumer income, tastes and fashion, the price of substitutes and complements, population size and age structure, and interest rates. Supply shifts, by contrast, come from changes in production costs, technology, taxes and subsidies, and weather in agricultural markets.
