1. The Design Argument |
The Design Argument, also known as the teleological argument, reasons that the complexity and order in the universe imply an intelligent designer – God. William Paley used the watchmaker analogy: if you find a watch on a heath, its intricate mechanism indicates a watchmaker; similarly, the natural world, being even more complex, points to a divine designer.
The argument can be summarised as follows: (1) The universe exhibits complexity, purpose and regularity. (2) These features cannot arise by chance. (3) Where we see design-like properties in artefacts, we infer a designer. (4) Therefore, the universe itself must have an intelligent designer – God.
Modern supporters, such as advocates of Intelligent Design, point to the fine-tuning of physical constants and the irreducible complexity of biological systems. They argue that some structures cannot function if any single part is removed, challenging gradual evolution.
However, the Design Argument faces strong criticisms. David Hume argued that the analogy between natural objects and human artefacts is weak; the universe might be more like a vegetable that grows naturally. Moreover, even if a designer exists, the argument does not prove it is the God of classical theism – it could be a weaker or multiple designers.
Evolution by natural selection provides an alternative explanation for apparent design. Charles Darwin showed that complex organisms can arise from simpler ancestors through gradual change and natural selection, removing the need for a designer.
| Premise |
2. The First Cause Argument |
The First Cause Argument, or cosmological argument, asserts that everything that exists must have a cause, and the chain of causes cannot go back infinitely. There must be a first, uncaused cause, which people call God. Thomas Aquinas presented this as the 'uncaused causer' in his Five Ways.
Aquinas argued that if there were no first cause, nothing would exist now, because an infinite regress of dependent causes cannot itself explain existence. The universe, being contingent, requires a necessary being (God) to explain why there is something rather than nothing.
Critics, such as David Hume and Bertrand Russell, challenge the claim that everything must have a cause. Hume questioned whether the notion of causation applies to the universe as a whole; we only observe causation within the universe. Russell argued that the universe 'just is' – a brute fact that needs no further explanation.
Another objection points out that even if a first cause exists, it does not have to be the God of theism: it could be an impersonal force or a series of causes. Furthermore, if God is exempt from needing a cause, why cannot the universe itself be the necessary being?
The Big Bang theory is sometimes used to support a beginning of the universe, but scientifically it describes the universe's expansion from a singularity, not necessarily a cause from nothing. William Lane Craig's Kalam cosmological argument defends the premise that whatever begins to exist has a cause.
3. The Problem of Evil and Suffering |
The problem of evil questions how an omnipotent, omnibenevolent and omniscient God can allow so much evil and suffering. The logical problem of evil claims that the existence of evil is logically incompatible with the existence of such a God. The evidential problem argues that the amount and distribution of evil makes God's existence unlikely.
Philosophers like J.L. Mackie formalised the inconsistent triad: God is wholly good, God is omnipotent, yet evil exists. If God is willing but not able to prevent evil, God is not omnipotent; if able but not willing, God is not wholly good. Therefore, the traditional God does not exist.
Theodicies attempt to justify God's goodness despite evil. Augustine's theodicy holds that evil is not a substance but a privation of good, caused by free will misused by angels and humans. God is not responsible for moral evil, and natural evil is a consequence of the fall of man.
Irenaeus's theodicy, developed by John Hick, sees evil as a necessary environment for soul-making. Through facing challenges and moral choices, humans develop virtues such as courage and compassion. Evil is a means to a greater good: the perfection of free beings.
Critics of theodicies point out that they do not explain the suffering of innocent children or extreme natural disasters. The free will defence explains moral evil but fails to account for natural evil unrelated to human choice. Moreover, an omnipotent God could have created free beings who always choose good.
4. Science and the Origin of the Universe |
Many religious believers interpret their sacred texts as conveying truths about the universe's origins, while science offers explanations based on empirical evidence, such as the Big Bang and evolution. The relationship between science and religion can be one of conflict, independence, dialogue or integration.
Conflict models, like that of Richard Dawkins, see religious creation accounts as unscientific and incompatible with modern cosmology and biology. In contrast, Stephen Jay Gould's principle of Non-Overlapping Magisteria (NOMA) argues that science and religion address different questions – science deals with facts, religion with values and meaning.
Some scientists are religious, believing that the Big Bang points toward a transcendent cause. The cosmological fine-tuning argument suggests that the physical constants of the universe are so precisely set that a designer is probable. Others, like Peter Atkins, argue that science will eventually explain everything, leaving no room for God-of-the-gaps.
5. Miracles as Evidence for God |
A miracle is typically defined as an extraordinary event that goes beyond natural laws and is attributed to divine intervention. David Hume defined a miracle as 'a violation of the laws of nature'. For believers, miracles serve as evidence of God's existence and activity.
Hume argued against believing in miracles on the grounds that the evidence for any miracle is always outweighed by the uniform evidence for the laws of nature. No testimony is credible enough to establish a miracle unless its falsehood would be more miraculous than the fact it tries to establish.
[Critics of Hume point out that his argument assumes natural laws are fixed and unchangeable, but if God exists, a miracle is possible. Moreover, many well-documented miracle claims, such as those at Lourdes, have been medically verified and lack natural explanation.]
Philosophers like Richard Swinburne argue that if God exists, it is not improbable that God would intervene in the world. Miracles are then credible if they occur in a context of religious significance. The resurrection of Jesus is the central miracle for Christianity, claimed to be a historical event validating Jesus's divinity.
6. Revelation and Holy Books |
Revelation is the process by which God makes himself known to humans. General revelation refers to God's self-disclosure through nature, conscience and reason, available to all people. Special revelation is direct communication through events, prophets and sacred texts, such as the Bible or the Qur'an.
Christians believe that the Bible is inspired by God and contains all that is necessary for salvation. In Islam, the Qur'an is regarded as the literal word of God, dictated to Muhammad. For believers, these texts carry authority and provide moral guidance and knowledge about God.
Philosophers ask how we can know that a revelation is genuinely from God. The problem of conflicting revelations arises because different religions claim exclusive truth. The verification challenge, associated with logical positivism, questions whether statements about God or revelation are meaningful if they cannot be empirically tested.
7. The Nature of God |
Classical theism describes God as omnipotent (all-powerful), omniscient (all-knowing), omnibenevolent (all-good), eternal and transcendent. These attributes define the perfect being necessary for worship. However, philosophical puzzles arise when we examine their coherence.
The paradox of the stone asks: can God create a stone so heavy that he cannot lift it? If yes, then there is something he cannot lift; if no, then there is something he cannot create. Either way, God seems not omnipotent. A common response distinguishes logical impossibilities – God can do anything logically possible, and creating such a stone is logically inconsistent.
Divine foreknowledge and free will present another problem: if God knows all future choices infallibly, then our choices seem determined and we lack genuine free will. Solutions include the idea that God is outside time and sees all events simultaneously, or that knowledge does not cause events.
8. Life After Death |
Belief in an afterlife is central to many religions. Christianity teaches resurrection of the body, where individuals will be raised and judged. Islam believes in a Day of Judgement leading to paradise or hell. Hinduism and Buddhism embrace reincarnation, based on karma.
Philosophical arguments for an afterlife include near-death experiences (NDEs), where people report sensations of leaving the body, seeing a bright light and meeting deceased relatives. Dualists, like Plato and Descartes, argue that the soul is a distinct substance that can survive bodily death.
However, materialists reject the survival of the soul, arguing that consciousness depends entirely on the brain. When the brain dies, personal consciousness ceases. The problem of personal identity – what makes a resurrected person the same individual – remains a significant philosophical challenge.
9. Faith and Reason |
Faith is often understood as trust or belief in God that goes beyond purely rational evidence. The relationship between faith and reason can be described in several models: faith against reason, faith above reason, faith and reason in harmony, and reason alone without faith.
Fideism, associated with Søren Kierkegaard, holds that religious belief is a matter of subjective passion and commitment, and requires a 'leap of faith' beyond rational justification. Pascal's Wager uses pragmatic reasoning: if you believe in God and God exists, you gain infinite happiness; if God does not exist, you lose little. Therefore, it is rational to believe.
Aquinas argued that faith and reason are compatible, with reason supporting the preambles of faith (e.g., God's existence) and faith perfecting reason. Kant, however, limited reason to make room for faith, arguing that one must act as if God exists as a postulate of practical reason for morality.
10. Religious Pluralism and the Problem of Conflicting Truth Claims |
In a religiously diverse world, different religions make conflicting claims about God, salvation and ultimate reality. Exclusivism holds that only one religion is true and offers salvation. Inclusivism affirms that one religion has the fullest truth, but other faiths can gain salvation through it implicitly. Pluralism, as advocated by John Hick, maintains that all major religions are valid paths to the same ultimate reality.
Hick uses the analogy of blind men and an elephant: each touches a different part and describes it differently, yet all are describing the same animal. In the same way, religious traditions are culturally conditioned responses to the same divine reality. Pluralism seems respectful but faces the criticism that it downplays real doctrinal differences, such as the Christian belief in the incarnation versus Islam's rejection of it.
The problem of contradictory truth claims raises a deeper epistemological issue: how can we decide which, if any, religious claim is true? Some propose that the world's religions are symbolic attempts to express the inexpressible, while exclusivists insist that truth claims must be tested by historical and rational standards.
