📚 AQA GCSE Business: Exam Technique and Marking Criteria | AQA
Success in AQA GCSE Business does not come from memorising textbook definitions alone. To achieve high marks, you must understand how the exam is marked and learn techniques that showcase your knowledge, application, analysis and evaluation effectively. For Year 10 students starting their GCSE journey, mastering exam skills early can make a huge difference.
AQA GCSE Business exams assess four main assessment objectives. AO1 tests your knowledge of business concepts, terms and theories. AO2 requires you to apply this knowledge to specific business contexts given in the exam paper. AO3 assesses your ability to analyse business information and develop logical chains of reasoning. AO4 evaluates your skill in making judgements and drawing conclusions.
These AOs are weighted differently across question types. Short-answer questions mainly test AO1 and AO2, while longer 6-mark, 9-mark and 12-mark questions also target AO3 and AO4. Understanding which AO is being examined allows you to tailor your answer accordingly.
2. Decoding Command Words |
Command words tell you exactly what the examiner wants. For 'State' or 'Identify', simply give the fact or name without explanation. 'Explain' demands a reason or cause-effect relationship, often linking a business concept to an outcome. 'Analyse' requires a detailed logical chain showing consequences. 'Evaluate' asks you to consider both sides and make a supported judgement. 'Justify' means you must give reasons to support a particular choice.
Misreading command words is a common reason for lost marks. If a question says 'analyse', do not just describe. If it says 'evaluate', always include a conclusion. Always underline the command word and check the mark allocation before you start writing.
3. Mastering 6-Mark 'Explain' Questions |
In a typical 6-mark 'explain' question, you should aim to make three clear, developed points. Each point should state a reason and then explain how it leads to a specific business outcome. Use connective phrases such as 'this means that...', 'as a result...' and 'because...'.
使用诸如“this means that...”、“as a result...”和“because...”
Application is crucial: refer to the case study business by name and use the information provided. For example, if the business is a small café facing rising costs, your answer might say, 'The café's increase in ingredient prices may lead to higher menu prices, which could reduce customer demand because...' Always link back to the context.
Avoid writing a single long paragraph. Structure your response into three concise, linked points to make it easy for the examiner to see your reasoning. This also helps you check that each point has both a statement and an explanation.
4. Conquering 9-Mark 'Analyse' Questions |
The 9-mark analyse question tests your ability to build logical chains of reasoning. A popular framework is PEEL: Point, Evidence (from the case study), Explain, and Link (back to the question). You need at least two well-developed analysis chains, each showing cause and effect steps.
To stretch your analysis, use phrases like 'this leads to...', 'over time this could cause...', 'the consequence is...' and 'which in turn results in...'. Do not be satisfied with a single link; aim for three or more logical steps. For instance: 'A rise in interest rates increases borrowing costs for the business -> this reduces profit margins -> which may force the business to cut marketing spending -> leading to lower brand awareness.'
为拓展分析,使用诸如“this leads to...”、“over time this could cause...”、“the consequence is...”和“which in turn results in...”
Remember that application must be woven into your analysis. If the business in the case study relies heavily on borrowed funds, mention that explicitly. Analysis without context will limit your marks to lower bands.
5. Winning 12-Mark 'Evaluate' Questions |
Evaluate questions are the highest earners and require you to weigh up arguments and make a justified decision. Start by defining any key terms in the question to show AO1 knowledge. Present at least two balanced points: one side might discuss benefits, the other side drawbacks or limitations. Ensure each point is analysed, not just stated.
